A fatal collision occurred in the westboundlane of the Highway 1, just outside of Strath-more at approximately 5 p.m. on July 26. Asemi truck and a John Deer farm tractor pull-ing a haybine collided when the truck wentto pass the tractor. The tractor had been trav-elling westbound in the right lane, and thesemi truck also in the right lane signaled tomove into the left lane.
When the driver of the tractor was ap-proaching the intersection there was a guard-rail he had to move out of the way for, whichcaused the haybine that he was towing tomove into the fast lane, said Const. BrockGrolla. He signaled to pass the tractor buthe didnt realize the tractor was going to bemoving out, and when he went to pass him,he struck that haybine.
The driver of the semi truck, a 63-year-oldmale, was unfortunately not able to slowdown and swerve out of the way. He sufferedlacerations to his face, but was otherwise un-injured. The driver of the tractor, a 64-year-oldmale from the Strathmore area, succumbed tohis injuries at the scene. The Strathmore Ruralre department and the RCMP were called tothe scene, efciently blocking the view fromgawkers. Const. Brock Grolla with the RCMPsaid neither alcohol nor speed was a factorand that it was an unfortunate accident. Atpress time the name of the tractor driver hadnot been released.

was going door to door telling resi-dents they would like to test waterquality and hardness.A ew o the residents who called in
indicated the company was acting on
behal o the town. The Town and EPCOR have not
hired this organization to provide wa-ter testing services. This is an unsolic-ited sales eort by this company andresidents should use Buyer Beware e-orts in determining i they would liketo have their water tested, said JesseParker, Director o Engineering andOperations or the Town o Strathmore.
Parker said water testing is perormedthroughout the Town by EPCOR, and isa requirement o Alberta Environment
Approval to operate waterworks sys-tem.

Keeping Your Balance When
the Investment World TurnsFollowing a year of steady gains, the stock market
has dropped. Over in Europe, debt problems havegripped several nations, while here at home, theBank of Canada may soon raise short-term interestrates. As an investor, how can you make sense ofall this?
For starters, dont panic. The sky is not falling onthe investment world - and you can take actionsto help yourself make progress toward your goals.
First, stay invested, so you can take advantage ofthe next market rally, whenever it occurs. Also, diversify your holdings among stocks and
bonds. Diversication can help reduce the effects
of volatility, though it cant guarantee a prot orprotect against loss. You also may want to build a ladder of bonds of
varying maturities. When market rates are low, youll still have your longer-term bonds payinghigher rates. And when market rates rise, youcan redeem your maturing shorter-term bonds topurchase new ones issued at the higher rates.
Finally, get some help from a professionalnancial advisor - someone who can analyze yoursituation and make appropriate recommendations.
The nancial news these days may seem dizzying- but by making the right moves, you can still keepyour balance.

Q: What potential fnancial benefts exist?
The two most common benets are offered by
the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). The rst is the
Death Benet which pays a maximum of $2500
depending on the deceaseds contributions to the
plan. The second is the Survivors Benet which
pays a portion of the deceaseds monthly CPP
benet to the surviving spouse. Any dependant
children may also qualify for nancial assistance
under this benet. Other potential benets
include The Last Post Fund, payable to families
of deceased war veterans, the Alberta Widows
Pension, the Guaranteed Income Supplement,
and Special Needs Assistance for Seniors.
Most of these benets are dependent upon
nancial need. While these are the mostcommon, there are many other benets that you
or your family may be eligible for. Your funeral
director can answer any further questions.

Christie Meyers wasntsure what to expect whenshe went before Towncouncil on July 21. Mey-ers had gone to speakto council about makingchanges to Centre Streetin regards to the safetyissues posed. A car onCentre Street hit Meyersdaughter Karlee just afew months ago. Meyersherself was hit by a caron the same street whenshe was younger. She would like to see stop
signs, or reduced speedlimits, on her street soshe can feel safe again.
I cant see putting inthree way stops or low-ering speed limits, saidMayor George Lattery.
Councillor Bob Sobolmade a motion to request,
a peace ofcer monitors
Centre Street for the peri-od of one month. Councilwants to be sure peopleare speeding as much asMeyers says before mak-ing a decision.
A lot of this has to do with enforcement andeducation of residents, said Sobol. Council ishesitant to make anydecisions right now un-til they have the resultsfrom the peace ofcerand are able to make aninformed decision.
I dont have a problem with the stop signs, its
just I never thought of it.I had thought of loweringthe speed limit. But yougot to make sure if yourelowering the speed limityou got somebody theremonitoring it, becauselowering it doesnt doanything unless you are
enforcing it, said Coun-
cillor Lois Wegener.Im glad theyre go-
ing to take some actionand look at it, and that Ihad the support of a fewcouncillors, said Mey-ers. Council promised tostart monitoring the roadthe next day, and sureenough Meyers said apeace ofcer was outsideher home the next day.
It did slow down thetrafc as he was there, but it picked up againwhen he left, said Mey-ers. She thinks the factthe ofcer was notice-
able from down the roadhelped to warn people hewas there, and she wouldlike to see him more hid-den in the future. Coun-cil will be meeting againat the end of August todiscuss what should bedone with Centre Street.

On July 22 the Communities In Bloom,C.I.B, judges were in Strathmore to rate thetown on a variety of aspects. This was thefth year the C.I.B organization has beenin Strathmore, and last year was the onlyone judges didnt check out the town. Last
year the provincial awards banquet washeld in Strathmore, and the town hostingthe banquet is not judged that year.
They have a grid for the town and they judge the town and do interviews withpeople, said Robert Breitwieser a mem-
ber of C.I.B.There was a dinner reception held for
the judges in the evening of July 22. C.I.Bjudge Louise Bruins spoke to the guestsand offered information about what the
judges look for. Some of the eight items judges look for
are things such as tidiness, tree and urbanforest management, and environmentalawareness.
In each of the eight categories the judg-es look at what the municipal and pub-lic properties have done. They also lookat commercial and industrial, churches, schools and not-for-prot groups. Lastly
they look at residential areas to see howthey tie in as individual groups, and as a
whole. The Town has done well in the past, but
no one will know until September howthe Town did this year.
We wont know until the provincialawards banquet in Provost in September. So were on pins and needles wondering, said Breitwieser. Towns are awarded with blooms and
can receive up to ve blooms. If morethan one town receives ve blooms thanthe judges will choose one town for eachcategory.

There are often organizations raisingmoney for different charities, and oftenthe Childrens Wish Foundation is on thereceiving end. Most times, though, whenstories are told of those who received wishes, they are not anyone you mayknow.
Leeza Nielson is from Hussar and she isseven years old. When Leeza was ve she
was diagnosed with leukemia. It started with a cold that wouldnt
go away, it wasnt getting worse or bet-ter. So she was put on antibiotics, andshe reacted to it and she got hives which wouldnt go away, said Sherri Nielson,Leezas mom.
She said one day they were sitting onthe couch when she noticed Leeza hadlittle purple dots, which is a sign of pe-techia. Sherri works at a medical lab inDrumheller where she took Leeza in forblood work. Leeza carried the blood overto the machines and as the results startedto come out Sherri knew it wasnt good.Sherri spoke to a doctor who told herbasically she could either take an ambu-lance or drive herself, but they had to get
to the Childrens hospital in Calgary.Your whole world turns upside down
in less than a minute. We went and it wasnine months before we got home again.I had to have a friend go to the farm andwait for all the kids to come home andexplain to them why we werent there, said Sherri. She said it was like hav-ing two families living in two separateworlds. Her three sons stayed home withher husband, who tried to keep their livesas normal as possible. Sherri and Leezamoved into the Ronald McDonald House,RMH, for the next nine months.
Other parents who went through thesame thing said it was similar, their kidsdidnt seem sick, but they also werent as
perky as they could be, said Sherri.
Leeza began chemotherapy treat-ments almost immediately after beingdiagnosed. When her hair fell out, Sherrishaved her own hair in a show of supportfor her daughter.
Every patient is assigned a social work-er at the Childrens hospital, and she toldthem about the Childrens Wish Founda-tion. After they moved into the RMH a repfrom the wish foundation came and lledout forms with the family. When the Nielson family found out
Leeza was being granted a wish, a bunchof stuff about Disney adventures was sentto the family. They were picked as a fam-ily to go on the Disney Cruise, and Leezawanted to be on the ship for her seventh
birthday. The Childrens Wish Foundation gaveeveryone in the family T-Shirts with theirlogo and requested they all wear it justone day on the cruise. The foundationcovered all of the costs incurred for thetrip. They also will pay for passports, oranything that is needed for the family.Everything on the cruise was shaped likeMickey Mouse from the pool to the food.
The two ears were hot tubs, saidLeeza. Her favourite Disney character isMickey, and so for Leeza it was an evenbigger treat. All of the Disney characters were around for photos everyday, andSherri said it was like a full time job try-ing to get photos with everyone.
The people that fundraise to make
sure these things happen dont get touse the facility or the wish, which to memakes it extra special that they are will-ing to volunteer their time, volunteer -nancially and do whatever they have todo, in order for kids to have somethingspecial, said Sherri.
Leeza nished treatment on July 18, butwill continue going for checkups once amonth for a year. Then it will be onceevery two months for another year, andafter that she will have to go once a yearuntil she is approximately 18-years-old.
She did amazingly well, and she hada few little side effects, but kids are veryresilient and they handle it far better thenadults do, said Sherri. The family will be going to Medicine
Hat in August to volunteer at a fundraiserCP Rail is holding for the Childrens WishFoundation on their steam train.

The Western Irrigation District is proposing to rehabilitate the main
canal through the Town of Strathmore. The construction limit will start
from the abandoned railway right of way west of the Strathmore Golf
course then to the east to Parklane Dr. The rehabilitation will include
the reshaping, lining and armouring of the existing canal to allow for
future ows.
The existing culverts located at Parklane Dr will be replaced during
the rehabilitation. The Town of Strathmore is working in conjunction
with the District to upgrade its infrastructure below the new culverts.
The Town of Strathmores activity is to widen the current crossing and
enable a wider roadway and sidewalk in the future. The time frame for
this work to commence is early October after the WID closes down the
canal for the season.
During the phases of construction, sections of the Parklane Drive
will be closed to all trafc. Alternate routes will be clearly identied,
marked and utilized for access during these times. The nal detour
options will be posted on the town website and local newspaper as wemove closer to start up dates. We ask residents to plan for alternate
routes during this time.
The Town of Strathmore thanks you for your

vital upgrade.

Drug trafcking may have gone upaccording to the recent Annual Perfor-mance Plan, APP, done by the RCMP,but its not due to increased criminalactivity. On July 13 Staff Sgt. Larry Mar-
zinzik went before Wheatland countycouncil to present the results of thisyears APP.
In his report he stated trafcking hasgone up by 250 per cent, and he saidthis was due to more focus being givento the area.
Basically what rose by 250 per cent was our enforcement in the areas ofproduction and trafcking. So it doesntmean the activity has risen, it just meanswe have identied the people involvedin the activity, and were able to obtainenough information to be able to laycharges against people in relation tothat, said Marzinzik.
In the past, the RCMP have been lim-ited in what they have been able to do
in regards to trafcking and produc-tion because of a lack of resources, andthis year, due to a shifting of resourcesmore focus was put towards trafck-ing. There was more groundwork donetowards gaining information and intel-ligence, which lead to search warrantsand operational plans, which lead tomore arrests and charges than in thepast.
We want to focus on keeping thatlevel of enforcement going. The pres-sure is always on anyone that is in-volved in the drug trade on the businessside and we want them always aware ofthe fact that were now monitoring andtrying to gain more information on adaily basis to try to identify them and
actually charge them, said Marzinzik.Drug involvement always rises as apopulation grows, and with Strathmore being so close to Calgary and manypeople working in the city, drug in-volvement could easily increase if itsnot monitored now.
Its bad to say, but the drug deal-ers do the same thing. They commuteout into the smaller communities toply their trade out here, and thoseare the people were trying to inden-tify and stop, said Marzinzik. Anyonein the criminal side of things often gointo whatever will make them the mostmoney, trafcking, counterfeiting andeven chop shops. Fortunately Wheat-land County is a quiet rural area, and
Marzinzik said some people will moveinto a quiet community so they cankeep to themselves. He also said thefact that the county is so peaceful andeveryone knows each other helps theRCMP more than in the city.
In rural areas people are more likelyto notice a suspicious person and re-port it to their local detachment, where-as in Calgary, most may just ignore it.

My cat has been urinating around the house for the past week, what can I do to help him stop?
Ask the Veterinarian!
Q
At is important that you seek veterinary advice from your veterinarian as soon as the behaviorstarts. his way it can be corrected immediately.here are several reasons as to why a cat may be urinating around the house:
1. First and foremost, ensure that your litterboxes are E!!2. edical reasons may be due to urinary tract infections, crystals, and other abnormalities. For thisreason it is very important to see your vet right away.
3. s your cat neutered/spayed? t is important to have the cat neutered or spayed at a young age, assometimes the behavior may be associated with marking.
4. ulti-cat household, or introduction of a new cat. Ensure that there is one more litterbox forevery cat within the household, as some cats may feel threatened by others. For example, if you havetwo cats, there should be three litterboxes in the house. Some cats become very upset by a new cat ormultiple cats, and do not do well when they feel threatened.5. Environmental hanges. any cats do not like changes to their routine. oving to a new loca-
tion, owner being away for vacation, renovations, etc, may lead to behavioral elimination problems.
Veterinary attention is always recommended for cats that urinate around the house. Once we
have ruled out a medical issue, we may move on to behavioral and environmental issues thatcan most often be corrected if caught early enough.

L
To the EditorIn the municipal election in 2007 there was a large
appetite or change in terms o our councillors andMayor. Most o that change occurred with only twoincumbents winning re-election.Are you satisfed with that change? In the past year
a poll was done in a local paper asking residents i
they were happy with the perormance o their Mayorand Council. The poll showed over 80% disapprovedo their perormance. Such a strong sentiment cannot
be ignored. It is easy to complain about our politi-cians but i nothing is done to solve the problem - wedeserve what we get.A group is being ormed with some specifc goals
in mind. This group is not a venue or complainingabout town issues, reciting stories about our politi-cians etc. The purpose o this group is to:
1) Seek out strong candidates or Council and espe-
cially or Mayor,2) Approach these individuals and encourage them
to run,3) Oer support to these candidates in their cam-
paign or the municipal election4) Publicly endorse these candidates in advance o
the election date
Do you want a say in the uture o your community?I you would like to be apart o this endeavour we
welcome your help. I you are thinking o running, wewould preer you not be a part o this group, however,we would certainly still like to hear rom you.
I interested in helping please email us (no phonecalls at this time please) at [email protected]

New group to seek out candidates for election this fall
he trathmore Fire epartment was called in to help with an animal rescue on July
25. nstead of a cat in a tree it was ducks in a drain. A mother duck was walking with
her babies along Westlake Bay when she crossed over a storm drain. wo babies
went down and when she walked back over the drain to see where they went, the
others fell through. Witnesses called the re department to help rescue the babies.
Fortunately the department had been doing rescue training nearby and Fire Chief
Muir Furzer went to inspect the situation. Four members from the re hall came to
the rescue. hey lifted the grate and one member climbed into the drainpipe with
a cardboard box. Almost immediately the baby ducks came over to the re ghter
who then carried them to safety.
veryone feared the mother may have abandoned her babies, but when they were
let loose at the lake, they chirped and she ew over to them.
t was a really good ending, said Furzer. All ve of the babies followed their mom,
swimming away into the sun.Photos Courtesy of Muir Furzer Water Softeners, Iron Filters

Every year at the Calgary Stampedethere are all sorts of draws to enter, from cars to boats to cash and evengroceries. The Groceries For Life is inits second year and is run by the LionsClub, who have been doing the LionsLucky Loot for 15 years.
We decided last year that we neededa second lottery, something new anddifferent, and we determined groceriesmight be a neat little spin, said DaveSawatzky, a member of the Lions lot-tery.
Kassandra Reed, 21, won the Grocer-ies For Life and will be splitting herprize with her sister and roommateKourtny, 26. Kassandra is a waitress at
the Station restaurant and Kourtny is acustoms immigration ofcer. Every yearthe girls buy tickets and this year theyplayed for the Chevrolet Camaro, theLions Lucky Loot and of course for Gro-ceries For Life.
I kind of didnt believe it so we re-wound the TV to make sure that we didwin, said Kassandra.
We were shocked basically. Our mom went a little bit crazy, said Kourtny. The sisters still looked shocked whenthey arrived at Stampede head quarterson July 22, where a banquet was heldfor all of the winners. The girls bought the 100 tickets for
$50. There were only 400,000 ticketsprinted, giving good odds to players.Groceries For Life doesnt mean a giftcard to Safeway, its a cash prize, which
is awarded each month. The option isto either be given a cheque for $700a month for the next 20 years, which
works out to approximately $168,000or take the buyout for $113,000. TheReed sisters decided they would ratherhave the monthly cheque.
Well save for a trip, not really any-thing large, said Kourtny.
Well get a new computer and TV,stuff like that and hopefully grocerieseventually, said Kassandra. The sistersplan to play the Stampede Lotteriesagain next year, but said they wont en-ter for the groceries one again, even ifthey were allowed to. Sawatzky said atthis point the Lions plan to stick withthe Groceries For Life lottery, but saidthey may decide to implement some-thing new in the future.

Kassandra Reed (l) and her sister Kourtny will be sharing the prize they won with the Groceries For Life lottery put on by the Lions Club at the CalgaryStampede. The girls opted out of the buyout, and will receive the $700/month for the next 20 years.

The World ProfessionalChuckwagon Associa-tions drivers are racingfor more than braggingrights this weekend onthe 2010 WPCA DodgePro Tour. As part of thenew Race Against Hun-ger program presented
by Encana, the driversare working with Wheat-land County Food Bankto raise donations ofnon-perishable food forthose in need. To date, the Race
Against Hunger hasraised more than $21,000and 2,800 lbs of food insupport of food banks inthe Grande Prairie, Drum-heller, Ponoka and Cal-gary regions. We hopethe Strathmore commu-nity gets behind the pro-gram and becomes ourmost supportive commu-nity yet. So far, out of allof the ofcial Tour stops,
Ponoka was the mostdriven, raising over 300lbs of food and $8,000in cash donations, saysCarmen Stone, MarketingManager with the WPCA.
The WPCA is veryexcited about this op-portunity to give localfood banks a boost. Our
young drivers, who are abig part of this initiative, especially see the real
value in being communi-ty-minded, adds Stone.
Encanas Community
Investment Program con-tains a key focus on sup-porting family and com-munity wellness. Wereaware that the recessionisnt over for everyone,so raising awareness forfood banks is a great wayfor us to give back to thecommunities where welive and work, says Dar-ci-Jane McAualy, GroupLead of Community Rela-
tions for Encana.Chuckwagons served
the hard working set-tlers of western Canadaas portable kitchens oncattle drives and longhauls across the prairies. Its nice to think thatthe chuckwagon hasntchanged much it pro-
vided food and comfortthen, and its continu-ing to do so today, addsStone. The Race Against Hun-
ger Chuckwagon will be
located at the entrance ofthe Strathmore HertiageDays grounds so commu-nity members can dropoff non-perishable foodand get a chance for au-tographs and interaction
with the WPCAs fooddrivers. The wagon will
be available for the du-ration of the event, and
will also accept cash do-nations.

SpalshN Boots will be coming toStrathmore to take part in HeritageDays. The husband and wife duo have
been performing since 2003 and haveput out four CDs and seven music vid-eos. SplashN Boots are full of energyand fun for kids ages 2 to 7. They will beperforming on the EnCana stage three
times daily from Saturday until Monday. Its one of our favourite events, said
Nick Adams, Splash. There are a bunch of new songs. We
get some of the kids right up on stagewith us, so a lot of interaction this year, said Adams.
One reason they love coming out hereis because they think Alberta is wonder-ful, and Nick said they spend more timetouring in Alberta than they do in On-
tario. Its quite fun to see everyone get into
it, and the audience is fantastic. I knowthey come for the rodeo but I think theyreally support the entertainment too, said Adams.
Weve performed at the HeritageDays Stampede before and can see whyits one of the top rodeos in Canada!said Taes Adams, Boots. The shows andthe people are so much fun, we just love
it.SplashN Boots originated when acourse assignment, at Queens Univer-sity, to write childrens tunes mixed witha love for the childrens entertainers oftheir youth led to recordings and per-formances across Canada. The duo hasperformed in over six countries for a to-tal of over 900 shows. They were alsorecently named the Canadian Childrensgroup of the year award winners.

The 53rd annual Rockyord rodeo had crowds flling Main Street or the pancake breakast ollowed by the parade on July
24. This was the frst year a gunfght had taken place and the crowd got right into the show cheering the actors. The sun
shone bright the entire weekend as people took in the three days o un flled events. A mini midway was set up or the kids
to enjoy, and snow cones sold more than the cotton candy as a way to help beat the heat.

The Hurtin for Haiti team left Win-nipeg on July 17 and arrived in Strath-more on July 25. The group continuedto run on to the Welcome to Calgarysign, which was as far as the city wouldallow them to go. Originally there weresix members going but on the rst dayof the run, they lost a runner.
The weather has been a bit of ashake up for us, weve been trying to
beat the heat, said James Slade one ofthe runners.
It poured rain about 10 minutes be-fore we left, said Chantal Denholm. This is the longest run any of them
have ever done in consecutive days. Therunners are raising money for Haiti. Theidea started with Donovan Hale, wholived in Jamaica before moving to Win-nipeg. Hale knows about the devasta-tion that can hit a community after anearthquake, or any type of natural di-
saster, and now it is hurricane seasonin Haiti.
Denholms sister-in-law Candace livesin Strathmore and was a huge help toChantal, and the rest of the team. Can-dace set up a fundraising BBQ at M&MMeats to help the team raise money forthe relief efforts.
Our website donations are comingin daily, so we dont know (whats beenraised), said Slade.
We were in Medicine Hat in our hotelwhen someone knocked on our door togive us money. The team isnt running back to Win-
nipeg; they all have different plans forwhen the run is done. One plan they all
still have is to continue their fundraisingefforts for Haiti.
We are putting together a slide showand video footage and putting togeth-er a sociable to raise more funds, saidChantal. There will be food and drinks, and people will be able to ask about thetrip and donate to the cause.
The fundraising is ongoing, were go-ing to keep the website up, said Slade.
Depending on the day, each teammember was running between 22 to 35miles a day. A few setbacks have hit thegroup, in terms of minor injuries andthe weather, but nothing has made theirdetermination falter.
I feel almost as good today as I didon day two, said Slade. The money be-ing raised will be for temporary shel-ters, but the group was told temporaryshelters would become permanent
when people move into them. So nowthey are looking for more long-termshelters. The team would love to raisemillions, but Slade said his goal for now
would be $100,000. Chantal said run-ning and fundraising has been moredifcult than she thought it would bein the beginning. She said when on theroad, its hard to connect with people
when youre tired and especially whenin a small town.
Strathmore has probably been the best reception weve had, said Chan-tal. Because of some of the troublesthe team has had, they are considering
writing a how-to guide for anyone whoplans to fundraise cross-country. The
website, hurtinforhaiti.weebly.com, willremain up, though the team is not sure
when or if they might make a run likethis again.

Saturday and Sunday saw the frst, possibly annual, charity paintball tour-nament held at Crosshairs Paintball Ltd.Fred and Joni Maunsell own CrosshairsPaintball Ltd, and work or Global Train-ing Centre next door. Every year theGlobal Training Centre hosts two mainevents to raise money or dierent char-ities as well as a ew other smaller typeevents. All money being raised this yearis going to the Childrens Wish Foun-dation. Earlier this summer there wasa garage sale, and a car wash, and atChristmas they adopt amilies and doood hamper drives.
Global has a social committee, andboth Fred and I are on the committee, and Fred brought up holding a charitypaintball tournament, said Joni.
For $400, teams were given a bee ona bun dinner, three games, and all o thepaintball gear they needed. Volunteersran the weekend, and there were nineteams registered.
We were hoping or 20 (teams), butwe got nine, so were hoping or morenext year, said Joni. There were threelevels o game played, an A, B and Clevel, and the Strathmore Rural Fire De-partment came in second or the B level.
For those who didnt want to run the
feld but still wanted to be a part o theun, there was a shoot out. For $5 peo-ple had a chance to test their marksman-ship by shooting eight cans o a wood-en sawhorse. Participants were given12 paintballs, and the person with thehighest score won a gun set.The weekend ended with many peo-
ple commenting that they would like tocome back again next year.
We dont have the fnal fgures but wefgure its got to be close to the $10,000mark, said Joni.

Spending a weekend playing paintball, while raising money for charity was
a weekend well spent for some. Crosshairs Paintball Ltd lent their course
to raise money for the Childrens Wish Foundation on July 24 and 25.

It is with great sadnessthat we announce the
passing of NickolasJanzen on July 20, 2010
at the age of 83 years. He will be forever loved
and remembered by his wife of 60+ yearsMarianne; his children Bob (Christine), Brenda
(Bob), Beverley, Lori (Bruce), Allan (Jane),Warren (Dolores), and Kathy (Marvin); twenty
grandchildren, and ve great-grandchildren.Nick was predeceased by his son Rodney
Nickolas; his brothers Herb and Ernie; hissister Hilda and numerous other relatives.
Dad was born on December 17, 1926 in Dafoe,Saskatchewan. From there the family movedto Provost, Cowley, Coaldale and eventually
settled in Namaka in 1932. In October of1949 he married Marianne Dirks and last
year they celebrated their 60th weddinganniversary. Dad lived a very full life and
worked hard to support his family. Over theyears he worked as a farmhand, a mechanic,
an electronics repairman, a vehicle inspectorand a bus driver. He had numerous tickets,
some of which he earned in his senior years.Dad was also very active in his community.
He was a volunteer reman, belonged to theArena Board, The Lions Club, the Legion, and
was a volunteer ambulance driver. He was amember of the Strathmore Alliance Church for
many years and served as an Elder, SundaySchool teacher, Care Group leader and was
the church treasurer for over thirty years.Dad also found time to enjoy several hobbies
which included photography and learning touse a computer at the age of 67 years. Heloved to go for country drives looking for
deer, birds, and other wildlife. Dad ofcially
retired some years ago but went back towork part-time and continued working forGolden Hills three mornings a week until his
83rd birthday. Dad loved his grandchildrenand they all enjoyed horsing around with
Grandpa when they were young. As they gotolder, they loved to listen to Grandpa tell his
many stories. Dad loved his practical jokesand could clap his hands louder than anyone
