Karlie was selected for the Southern California team after finishing second in the 2008 Junior Bowlers All Star Tourney. Karlie has been bowling for six years and bowls in two leagues at Brunswick Cal Oaks Bowl in Murrieta. She currently averages 180 with a high game of 262, and high se- ries of 715. Her favorite bowl- ing ball is the Storm Hy Road because of its’ good reaction and pin carry. Karlie’s goal is to receive a college bowling scholarship and compete on a college team. Karlie is grateful to her mom Luann and dad David for supporting her pursuit of her bowling dreams. She also wants to thank her coaches JIM MURTISHAW and NEAL WRIGHT for their help, and DAVE TENNEY manager of Brunswick Cal Oaks Bowl for supporting his junior bowlers. Karlie’s favorite tip came from coach Wright, when he told her that she is not bowl- ing against other bowlers but against the lane condition. Ever since, she has focused on adjusting to the lane and not worrying about her oppo- nents. EL CAJON—The Profes- sional Bowlers Association Tour is, by far, the most impor- tant and effective promotional vehicle in bowling. A new era in the PBA will feature 23 tournament telecasts slated for the 2009-10 season, beginning with the creation of the Lumber Liquidators PBA World Series of Bowling. The World Series of Bowling will be held in the Detroit area and kick off at longtime PBA host center, Taylor Lanes, in Tay- lor, Michigan, about 20 miles southeast of Detroit. This will mark the first time the PBA tour will spend an ex- tended period of time in one city. Six events will be staged at Thunderbowl Lanes. This is a 90-lane facility featuring a unique setup for taping of the ESPN telecasts; as well as continuous online coverage of the PBA Tour’s live streaming video service “Xtra Frame” on pba.com. Thunderbowl Lanes features an arena that original- ly housed the Detroit franchise of the old National Bowling League and later catered to the Detroit All-Star bowling league. The seven PBA champion- ship events will air out what has been traditionally the first half of the PBA season from mid-October to early Decem- ber 2009; Sunday afternoons on ESPN. The second half of the season, from January to April will feature live Sunday telecasts and travel to at least 10 cities across the country, including three major champi- onships; USBC Masters, PBA Tournament of Champions, and the US Open. In my estimation, the ad- vantage of the seven-week stand in one location FAR out- weighs the loss of tournaments in other areas, particularly from a financial standpoint. The savings in travel costs will be a financial boom to the PBA as well as the PBA players. The World Series of Bowl- ing is exactly what it implies. All events are open to profes- sionals as well as amateurs. Amateurs may enter directly into the open event fields; (Motor City Open; PBA World Championship; PBA Women’s World Championship; and PBA Senior World Champi- onship). Amateurs may also enter Lumber Liquidator’s PBA exempt Tour events; but must qualify through Pro Tour Qualifying Rounds. All ama- teurs who finish among the “World Series” by John Jowdy top 10 in TQR’s will advance to the field of 72. World Series of Bowling exempt events will consist of 41 players from the 2008-09 points list; eight players from the PBA Tour Trials; seven players from the PBA Region- al Players Invitational; three international players exemp- tions; one Golden Parachute qualifier; one player from a medical deferment in 2008-09; (Tommy Delutz) the 2008-09 TQR points list leader; and 10 players (including one ama- teur) that advance from the TRQs’. One of the main features of the World Series of Bowling is the appearance of THREE two-handed-thumbless bowl- ers; Finland’s Osku Palermaa, Australia’s Jason Belmonte, and former Team USA member, Cassidy Schaub. After a deal with the Euro- pean Bowling Tour, the World Series of Bowling asked all international stars to apply for exemptions. They had dozens of applications and decided on three outstanding interna- tional players that included Osku Palermaa, the European Bowling Tour points leader; Tae-Hwa Jeong, a 10-time Ko- rean PBA Tour winner as well as a five-time Japan PBA Tour titlist; and Amleto Monacelli, a 19-time PBA champion. In addition to this, there were entries into World Se- ries events from players from Sweden, Denmark, and Rus- sia. Add to this, Mika Koive- niemi of Finland and Jason LAUGHLIN, NV—July 2009! Locals score! Playing in your own backyard has always been an advantage and several locals, who bowl regularly at Laughlin’s Riverside Lanes, showed that to be true at Ralph Morton’s FunTime summer classic held July 13 -15, 2009. This semi-annual event drew over 230 bowlers from as far as Tennessee, Oklahoma and, of course, the western states. The tournament format con- sisted of two (2) daily squads competing against each other in two (2) divisions. Each day represented a separate tourna- ment handicapped at 100% from 220. Leading the local con- tingent were Oscar & Peggy Leschhorn, Bob Wester, Pat Taranto, Willy Tuquero, Do- ris Mesa, Diane Burton, Jeff Sanders & Doris Richardson all finishing well into the top 5 in several daily tournaments. In spite of those efforts the overall prize winners came from San Diego. Steve & Amy Gottlieb managed to use their high handicaps to their ad- vantage taking the top money award barely edging out the Leschhorns. Let’s not, however, forget the others who also scored well with their consistent ef- forts. In Division 1 Roy & Ruby McNeely, Mike & Mary Donnelly, Lee & Mary Lou Peterson, quadriplegic Jef- frey (unbelievable story) & Ralph Morton FunTime Bowling No Tap Doubles Tournament Riverside Lanes, Laughlin, NV by Brad Domes Carol Lewis, Bea Grajeda, Clarice Byas, Lena & Jack Grace, Howard Oquest, Sunny Lee Kotchever, Dan Miller & Margrit Baird. Chuck Meek’s (900) three (3) perfect games on Wednes- day gave him four (4) for the tournament, after scoring one (1) on Monday, leading all 300 shooters. The lighter side of the tour- nament had a couple special happenings. The Sunday night blind draw, for those arriving early, went well with a lot of fooling around and some se- rious bowling. Bowlers met their partners for the first time making it an ice breaker so to speak. Casino dollars were awarded for special trick shots wrought up by the host Ralph Morton. On Tuesday, follow- ing the last squad, Morton, Hounsley and Gary Anderson challenged Riverside Lane’s skilled bowling trio of Brian Markowitz, Charlie Emmons & George Kleinstuber to a three game match. Since its inception the locals have had their way so it was decided that the challengers would bowl no tap against regular scoring. It turns out that wasn’t necessary as the locals stumbled a bit never really getting untracked. So it looks like kudos finally for the challengers. Speaking of the local con- tingent at Riverside Lanes, the staff, headed by Brian Markowitz, is to be thanked. Brian’s staff: Charlie Em- mons, Mollie Bradley, Dustin Markowitz, Delora Morris and the entire service core go out of their way to keep the center humming smoothly. 2009 WORLD TEN PIN BOWLING ASSN. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

by Agnes Duffy

The 2009 World Ten Pin Assn. Women’s World Championship will be held in the Cashman

Center in Las Vegas starting with final team arrivals and practice on July 27th. Olympic type open-ing ceremonies will be that evening with the planned forty-seven nations in their parade uniforms, signs, flags, team of six bowlers , coaches and officials participating.

The Cashman Center with the sixty installed lanes etc. for USBC Open Tournament will close on July 24th and will provide a perfect spot for this International tournament held every two years. The bowlers will compete on a medium lane condition and a short lane condition as selected by the technical delegate Daniel Falconi of Mexico.

As an Olympic sanctioned event nations are sending their finest bowlers to compete so this year the selection includes six women that have at least 72 pro titles. Is there a six women team event. NO but in this tournament substitutions are allowed in the second or third games of the five persob team event. The sixth bowler is put with other sixth bowlers to form the five regular team members. This way everyone has the opportunity to include their scores in team for the All Event Medal and moveup to Match Game event.

Who will represent the United States? Lynda Barnes and Stefanie Nation (both bowled in this tournament in 2007 and 2005 plus won their places in the qualifying tournament). Joining them are familiar names of Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Liz Johnson, Wendy MacPerson and Kim Terrell-Kearney.

Lynda (Norry) Barnes has bowled in many of these tournaments (I do not have the exact count) but she should be able to calm down some nerves for those representing their country for the first time. When that Gold Medal is won in an event and during the ceremonies our flag goes up the highest middle pole and “The Star Spangled Banner” fills the center the goose bumps are sure to go up and down the spine.

Competition starts with with three squads of Singles. Two bowlers from each nation on a squad which is determined by draw by tthe manager. Then Doubles, Trios and Five Person Team. Each event consists of six games per bowler and winner of All Events is determined by the 24 games total. The top 16 women begin round robin competition, with 10 bonus points for each victory. After 15 games the top three women enter the stepladder elimination. The championship is decided on a two game total pins match between the No. 1 qualifier and the opponent who won the first one game match.

The best showing our women have made was in the 11th WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HELSINKI, FINLAND, 1987- 44 NATIONS 196 WOMEN. I was there - what a thrill. The United States won Third-Bronze Medal - Singles; Doubles - First- Gold Medals; Trios won First and Third - Gold and Bronze Medals; Five Player won First - Gold Medals; All Events First Place - Gold Medal. THE FLAG WENT UP THE HIGHEST POLE FOUR TIMES AND OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM FILLED THE CENTER FOUR TIMES.

The United States team lineup was: Nellie Glandon 1198, Karen Bender1188, Sandra Jo Sherry 1276, Kathy Vodka 1170, Cora 531, M. Sue Holton 648.for a total of 6011.

The last World Championship was held in Malaysia that included both men and women but with an increasing number of nations entering and with the Olympic officials feeling a sport should hold a world chamionship every year it was changed to women one year and men the next. But to me it has taken some of the glamour out of it. When one sex was bowling the other was there cheer-ing them on. And there were romances that developed into marriages even between nations.

WE WISH THE BEST OF LUCK TO OUR TALENTED TEAM USA IN LAS VEGAS.

USBC TO PROVIDE LIVE VIDEO OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ON BOWL.COM

ARLINGTON, Texas - Bowling fans around the world will be able to watch the finals and select semifinals of the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Women’s Championships on bowl.com. The United States Bowling Congress plans to live stream from Las Vegas, Nev., portions of the event that will feature bowlers from 45 countries.

“We believe there is tremendous interest in watching this event both here in the United States and internationally,” said USBC Vice President of Media Pete Tredwell.

“Presenting the highest levels of bowling competition online can be a great way to gain addi-tional exposure for the sport.”

The live stream will be distributed using Ustream.TV, a service that will insert advertisements over the video at times. USBC does not control the content or frequency of the advertisements.

“At this time, the ad-supported video stream is the financially responsible way for USBC to provide this content for free,” Tredwell said. “I am confident fans would rather see a few pop-up ads than not see the action at all.”

Round three saw Alan Basto down Sean Johnson 222-157. Don Pullianm did it to the “Yes Man” Edmond Del Mundo 280-193. So Sean and Ed were 4th and 5th with fine bowling and $130. Donald and Alan to meet for the right to bowl Andrew Lung for the title.

Pulliam in this game out struck Basto in a big 259-239 win and Ala was 3rd and $230 with Donald off to the title game vs Andrew Lung.

The title game was on. Donald led off with a strike and Andrew open/split then a big double. But split again in the 4th. Donald clean with a double in frames 5-6 had a lead . Lung then showed his heart with a huge three bagger in frames 5-6-7 and another split in the 8th had Lung lead-ing by 9 pins but he opened missing the 2-8. Donald led going to the 10th frame. Kung finishing first needed a big fin-ish as he was now behind. He struck and then caught a break with a light but great shot thaqt carried. He struck on the final shot to have the lead. Donald would need a double to win. He threw a great shot but the 7 pin stood and finished 192/218

with Mr. Lung at 190/229.Now our latest champion in a thriller and rightly so. Andrew is most deserving, always does his best, very competitive and also one of the nicest people you can hope to meet as is his great family who are ABTA members. We are blessed to have them. Great bowling by a very nice Young man who has had some trying times and is now our latest champion. Great Bowling Andrew! The Mou Liu will be proud :-)

National Deaf BowlingNews News On Deaf Bowling Tournaments

by Connie Marchione NORWALK — In this article I am listing the deaf tournaments that are going on in U.S. so that the deaf bowlers might be inter-ested to know and plan to enter one or more. At present, there are three organizations that are national in scope: National Deaf Bowling Association (NDBA), National Deaf Mixed Bowling Association (NDBMA) and Deaf Senior Bowlers of America (DSBA). There are many smaller regional and state deaf tournaments but we will first mention the national ones. The oldest, NDBA is in limbo since its 42nd tournament at Reno in 2007, had no tournament for last two years for lack of host sponsors. The once mighty men group also has a companion women group NDWBA are still looking for a host sponsor to keep it going. Interested sponsors can contact NDBA President Dennis J. Brady, NY at [email protected] for details. A new startup NDMBA that is growing in popularity, recently last month completed its 9th annual tournament in New Jersey and is having its 10th anniversary event in Las Vegas in June 2010. This is a 4-days mixed tournament with events to select and enter. While most of the events are with handicap, it has a scratch King/Queen event. One interesting thing about its recent NDMBA New Jersey tournament was that my friend, Ken DeGroff “heard” that there were three 300 games made there. That compels me to contact Secretary Gary Burgess, AZ at [email protected] for the tournament results and truth about the 300s. Any interested bowler can contact him at that e-mail address for the entry form and information about the June Las Vegas NDMBA tournament. While both NDBA and NDMBA require host sponsors to con-tinue their annual tournaments, DSBA which opens to deaf and hearing impaired seniors 55 years and older, is different. Although DSBA is national in scope drawing deaf senior bowlers from all over U.S. and Canada, it had all its past 12 tournaments in one attractive place, Las Vegas. Its three-days 13th annual tourna-ment will be in its usual bowling center, the Orleans and Casino expecting its loyal followers making their annual trek there. With new seniors and old returnees entrants being icing on the cake, DSBA maintains its own fundraising and gets donations in continuing its annual event. The coming three-day event is on October 13-14-15, 2009. Any deaf senior bowler, 55 years and over can get DSBA information from Carol Moers, Denver who has been DSBA Secretary-Treasurer since its founding 12 years ago, at [email protected]. Of all regional deaf tournaments, the oldest largest one, Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association (GLDBA) is having its 74th an-nual Tournament in Toledo, Ohio on April 15-18, 2010. Secretary-Treasurer Mike Jasko can be contacted at [email protected] for entry form and information. More regional tournaments will be listed next week.

News: Bob Jones Hits 681-711 In Calif. State At Modesto

MODESTO — Jim Mohr e-mailed that he and Bob Jones had entered in the California State USBC tournament in Modesto on Jones’ friends team. On Saturday’s Singles and Doubles events, Bob was doing well with 212-225-244 for 681 in Singles and 230-269-212 for 711 in Doubles. That was great but on the Sunday’s team event, he could not carry well ending up with 525 for 1917 all events total. Jim won’t tell me his scores.

Jason B. VictoriousIn Scratch 6-GamerAt Oak Tree Lanes

by Ryan Richardson DIAMOND BAR — On Sunday, July 26 at Oak Tree Lanes, we concluded our 2nd leg of our summer tournament series. We had 28 entries paying out $1,400 in prize fund, and $560 in sidepots and blocks.

Steve Smith got the ball rolling with a red-hot start bowling a 269-279-191. Steve held onto a one-pin lead to win the first block and win the first two sidepots. Dan Mosser was consistent throughout the tour-nament just missing the first block sidepot, but was able to bowl a nice 270 game and that would be the winner of the third game sidepot, also placing 2nd overall in the tournament.

Jason B. (sorry he didn’t give his last name) started off slow, but then took off shooting a 171-269 and 243, for the first block. Jason started the 2nd block off with a 299 game, good for the fourth game side-pot, and finished the block off with a 267 and 188 game, giv-ing him the overall victory for the tournament. Other sidepot winners were Dave Brown 279 and Zarcoff Boutell 279.

I would like to thank ev-eryone for coming out and bowling our Scratch 6-Gamer on behalf of Oak Tree Lanes’ management. The turnout was great and I look forward to see-ing everyone back on August 23rd. Check-in at 10:00 a.m., bowl at 11:00 a.m. $65 entry, $20 sidepots, and blocks. See you there.

Belmonte of Australia who are on the PBA exempt list. Stuart Williams from England and George Lambert from Canada qualified through the tour tri-als, thus establishing the World Series of Bowling as truly an international event.

The women’s World Series of Bowling consist of 12 play-ers from their U.S. Women’s Tour Trials, six champions from 2008 and at least two players qualifying through TQR’s.

The capacity for the Mo-tor City Open is 196. For the PBA World Championships the capacity is 200 entries. The maximum for the Senior World Championships is 140 and the maximum for the PBA Women’s Championship is 100.

There will also be eight side events and sweepers. Three side events with a $250 entry fee are restricted to amateurs and non-exempt PBA players. Five sweepers with entry fees of $100 and $80 are open to ALL players. All side action will go directly into the prize fund; no lineage fees or admin-istrative fees will be deducted.

WORLD SERIES continued from page 1In order to participate in any side event, a bowler must enter at least one of the main tour-naments or any of the TQR’s . Each of the five sweepers will be contested on five different PBA lane patterns…Earl An-thony, Tournament of Cham-pions, U.S.Open, Dick Weber and Shark.

I feel confident that the “new” PBA format will not only be successful, but with telecasts of the events aired internationally, it will increase TV ratings and create greater worldwide interest. It will surely inspire younger genera-tions of aspiring bowlers.

The regular PBA tour fea-turing 64 exempt players will include numerous new bowl-ers and number of veterans who re-qualified. Two of the most notable players failing to gain exemption for the 2009-10 season were David Traber and Dave D’Entremont.

Bowlers who qualified for the 2009-10 season were; Dave Arnold, Mitch Beasley, Joe Ciccone, P.J Haggerty, Tim Mack, John May, Derek Sapp, Cassidy Schaub, Thomas Smallwood, Brian Waliczek,

Lonnie Waliczek, Stevie We-ber, and Troy Wollenbecker.

Although the “new” PBA look is a product of united and cooperative PBA employees, much of the credit must be at-tributed to Tom Clark, the dep-uty commissioner of the PBA. Clark, a former USA Today sports reporter, has demon-strated an uncanny ability to promote bowling as no other individual in recent years. He has been most instrumental in resurrecting women pro-fessional bowlers and did an excellent job in his short stint with the USBC. And now he is displaying the greatest pro-motional skills on the PBA staff since Eddie Elias found-ed the organization. Perhaps the PBA’s greatest coup of the 2009-10 season was the selection of Brian Voss as the Golden Parachute exemption. The choice of Voss, who failed to qualify for the 64-man ex-emption list, was a no-brainer. The former poster-boy of the PBA tour is a 24-time PBA champion and is fully capable of holding his own among the PBA touring players.

Meanwhile, the addition of several new faces, the re-qualification of a number of veterans, the and the initiation of the World Series of Bowling promises to make the 2009-10 PBA season one of the great-est ever!

STUDIO CITY — Well, welcome back cowpoke to the rodeo that we call Pinz. We here are roping and wrangling all kinds of beastly animals in high hopes that you’ll mosey on in and bowl a few games.

PINZ ADULTS Now, we look at the sky for a smoke signal, it’s barely legible. Oh yes, there it is, Pinz has the best bowlers. Well holy smokes, let me keep fanning the flames so you can see your names next week.

PINZ JUNIORS Now you’re back and golly gee wow did we miss you. We can’t wait for ADULT/JUNIORS to start since half of the staff will be competing this year. At least Masha and Chana won’t be last place for the first week. Have a great season.

PINZ SENIORS/LADIES You may remember that this article can be satirical and oft deliberate. Yet, we offer this gem to all of you; “your bowling is really stinking up the joint”. That’s why we keep smelling roses this past week, not because of upcoming proms but from your terrific smelling games, great job. Here’s the blooming scores: Joslyn Seniors: Art Abell 202/507, Sol Stein 481, Betty Dushkin 210/501, Teri Bonato 173/475, Don Thorner 191. Bowler of the Week: This week we want to honor a dy-namic duo, a pair of cards, a (please add your own allitera-tion). Bonnie Perlman and Ed Barnes have been “bowling” us over for the past few weeks, and guess what they have trophies to prove it. Thanks for being you. Sweetness Quote of the Week: “Oh yeah, we are taking over the Carter”.— Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) from New Jack City NOTE: The league sheets that were faxed to the Bowling News did not arrive and were not available at the center. Need better smoke signals! See you next week.
