Teen Masters

Continued from Page 1

Soedarmasto, in his fifth Teen Masters, said experience in the past four

events was a big help.

“The previous years I wasn’t as sharp with my spare game or my men-

tal game, so those were what I worked on the most,” he said. “I wasn’t

really watching the scoreboard, but I was watching the players around me

when I struggled to see what they were doing. From block to block, I did-

n’t feel like I was as focused as I needed to be, but when I got the distrac-

tions out of my head, I was able to bowl to the best of my ability.”

Brand, who bowled in his first Teen Masters, said he didn’t expect to

win at age 13, but “I was expecting to make match play. I’m happy I did

as well as I did.”

Jacobs, 17, who trailed Paige Beeney of Salado, Texas, by 181 pins after

24 qualifying games, won 12 of her 18 match games and averaged 207.69

to finish with 9,083 pins, including match play bonus pins, to defeat

Beeney by 243 pins in the girls’ competition.

“After qualifying, I kept telling myself, you can do it, you can do it, so

I just concentrated on making good shots and picking up my spares,”

Jacobs, a first-time Teen Masters competitor, said. “I wanted to bowl the

tournament because the playing field is level with the bowling balls and

conditions, and it went really well.”

The U14 Division girls’ winner was 14-year-old Allie Leiendecker of

Wooster, Ohio, the only U14 player to qualify for match play on the girls’

side.

“I did a lot better than I thought I was going to do,” Leiendecker said. “I

practiced a lot on house shots with the bowling balls, but not on the tour-

nament patterns. It worked a lot better than I thought. I did a lot better than

I did last year (when she finished third in the U14 division).”

Teen Masters champions who have gone on to become PBA Tour titlists

include Mike Fagan (1997), Jason Sterner (2003), Ryan Ciminelli (2004),

and Jake Peters (2006).

Passaic County USBC BA hosted

its thirty third Hall of Fame induction

ceremony and dinner last week at

The Brownstone in Clifton, NJ.

President Mark Roome and admin-

istrator Carl Quazza conducted the

ceremonies inducting Ronald Dennis

and Roome for Meritorious Service

and Stephen W. Aiello, Kenneth

Carson, Keri May and Richard

Warren in the Bowling Achievement

category.

Ronald DennisMeritorious Service

Ron has been a sanctioned bowler

for more than 40 years and a board

member of the Passaic County BA

and Passaic County USBC for the

past 23 years. In 2008, he was elect-

ed Director of the Year by his peers

on the PC USBC Board. He helped

to organize and create the first Mixed

Doubles Tournament in our county

and ran it for the first five years of its

existence. He has served admirably

on every committee he has been

assigned to at the county level for the

past 23 years. He has also served as a

state director for the past six years.

He represented our county as the

Sargent of Arms in the NJ State

Traveling League for two seasons.

When all three associations in our

county came together and agreed to

merge, Ron took it upon himself to

volunteer to become a youth director

because the majority of current direc-

tors were reluctant to give up their

positions as directors. He saw the

need to increase the youth programs

in our county and became a certified

USBC Junior Coach. He coached the

youth league at Garden Palace Lanes

and currently coaches the youth

leagues at T-Bowl II. He had the ini-

tiative to organize and enter a junior

team for the very first time from T-

Bowl II into the junior traveling

league this past season.

Mark RoomeMeritorious Service

An active bowler since 1978, Mark

decided 20 years ago that he wanted

to give back some of his time and

serve the bowlers of Passaic County

and the State of New Jersey. He has

been a very active board member

since joining in 1995. In 1998, he

was elected Director of the Year and

served as Vice-President from 2002

thru 2006. He served as the transi-

tion committee chairman charged

with merging the Passaic County

YBA, WBA, and BA. Mark has also

served on every other committee dur-

ing his time on the board, usually act-

ing as the chairman of at least two or

three of them each season. He recog-

nized the need to raise funds for con-

tinuing the work of the association

and has chaired the Ad Book com-

mittee for the past 14 years.

He was elected the first President

of the fully-merged Passaic County

USBC in 2006 and held that position

through 2012. He was reelected as

President in 2014 and continues to

serve in that capacity today. On the

state level, he went through all the

chairs of Vice-President and served

as the President of the State USBC

BA during the 2013-14 season. His

volunteer service is not limited to

bowling, as he has been a very active

volunteer fireman for the past 38

years attaining the rank of Captain.

For ten years, he was the Northeast

Morris County Mutual Aid Fire

Coordinator.

Stephen W. AielloBowling Achievement

Stephen, an active adult sanctioned

bowler for the past 16 seasons, has

already bowled a mind boggling 127

sanctioned 300 games and 87 sanc-

tioned 800 series. His high 800 series

to date is 879. Over the past 10 sea-

sons, bowling a total of 3,803 record-

ed sanctioned games, his combined

average for that time is 230.6. His

highest single season average has

been 246 for 105 games, and he has

averaged 240 or higher 11 more

times in league play in the past 10

years.

Since the 2005-06 season when the

PC USBC began running their Open

Championship Tournament, Stephen

has been a member of the winning

scratch four-man team nine of the

past ten seasons. He also has picked

up four scratch Doubles titles, three

scratch Singles Titles and Two

Scratch All Events titles. During both

the 2005-06 and 2011-12 seasons

when he won the All Events Titles,

he also won the "Grand Slam" win-

ning singles, doubles, and teams at

the same time. His total of 18 coun-

ty titles is more than likely to contin-

ue to grow in the future as he is the

strongest supporter of the events run

by the association.

At the state level, Stephen has

earned one State Masters title and

one Singles title. He has also had a

few top finishes and one near miss in

the state doubles event. With this

impressive resume completed over

such a short period of time, it seems

likely that he will be knocking on the

door for enshrinement into the State

Hall of Fame very shortly.

Kenneth CarsonBowling Achievement

Ken started bowling at a very

young age being taught by his grand-

father, Angelo Vicari, who was

enshrined into this Hall of Fame in

1977. Ken was a four-year letterman

at Garfield High School and later

went on to bowl at St. Peter's

College. He was the backbone of his

college team during the three years

he started. Ken earned numerous

honors for his team and as an indi-

vidual, including selections to the

National All-Tournament team in

1984 and 1985. Second team All

American Honors were bestowed

upon him during his senior year.

After he graduated, he also

coached the team and led the team to

the National Championship Finals in

1990.

Ken continues to enjoy bowling

competitively in the local leagues

and tournaments. In Passaic County,

he has won three different scratch

titles: one in All Events, one in

Singles, and one in Doubles. At the

state level, he captured the 2013

Doubles title at Circle Lanes with his

partner, George Cretella. This was

the first title that these former college

teammates had captured together in

28 years having last scored a title

together in Las Vegas in 1985.

To date, Ken has amassed 51 300

games, 24 800 series, with the high

being 867. His composite average for

1,607 games from the past ten years

is 235.6 showing a remarkable con-

sistency which is a trademark of his

game and talent.

Keri MayBowling Achievement

Keri has been a very active bowler

in Passaic County for the past 15

years. She has bowled in some of the

best leagues this county has to offer

usually being the only women bowl-

ing in these competitive leagues.

Usually soft spoken on the lanes and

small in stature, Keri lets her ball and

bowling skills do all of the talking for

her. She easily holds her own com-

peting and beating the men in most of

these leagues.

Her 10 year composite average for

4,536 games bowled stands at 214.3.

Her high single season average dur-

ing this time was 224 and her low

209 showing a remarkable consisten-

cy. According to the most current

USBC records, Keri has bowled at

least 10 sanctioned and approved 300

games. She also has at least seven

sanctioned series of 800 or better

with the high being an 847.

Richard WarrenBowling Achievement

Richard has been a sanctioned

bowler for the past 37 years.

He is a strong supporter of the sport

showing a willingness to bowl in any

type of league for the sheer enjoy-

ment of the sport. Often bowlers of

his caliber shy away from the lesser

leagues but Richard does not. As

long as he can put together a team of

friends, he will bowl with them

regardless of their level of expertise.

He usually displays a quiet low-key

personality always appreciated by

the officers and other members of

any league he bowls in.

He seldom misses the opportunity

to bowl in any of our county tourna-

ments. He has five county scratch

titles to his credit, four team, and per-

haps his proudest accomplishment a

singles title during the 1993-94 sea-

son when he bowled the only 700

series in the singles portion of the

tournament, a 702 to win it. He is still

looking to capture a doubles title,

after at least four second or third

place finishes. Richard has 11 sanc-

tioned and approved 800 series to his

credit, with an 858 being his high.

Thirty-six approved 300 games are

also on his record at this time. He is

not one to be in any rush to submit

the necessary paperwork for any of

these awards, and you can rest

assured that he has left more than a

few 300 games slip by his personal

records.

By Bill Vint - PBAHAMMOND, Ind. – After a 14-year absence, the

Professional Bowlers Association’s top senior and contem-

porary stars will converge on Olympia Lanes in Hammond

Aug. 5-7 for the Xtra Frame PBA/PBA50 South Shore

Doubles Championship.

The PBA/PBA50 doubles event, last held in Reno, Nev.,

in 2001, historically gave the rising stars of professional

bowling an opportunity to bowl as doubles partners with

“senior” players, many of whom had already achieved hall

of fame status. The revival of the doubles event, hosted by

a long-time PBA50 Tour host center, will continue that tra-

dition with many of the PBA’s brightest young stars des-

tined to bowl doubles with some of the PBA’s most highly-

decorated champions, including Hall of Famers Walter Ray

Williams Jr., Norm Duke, Pete Weber, Amleto Monacelli,

Parker Bohn III, Tom Baker, Johnny Petraglia and others.

The competition will be covered live from start-to-finish,

exclusively on PBA’s Xtra Frame online video-streaming

service. In the end, both the PBA and PBA50 Tour partners

will be rewarded with titles and shares of the projected

$20,000 first prize.

The last staging of the event, called the National Bowling

Stadium Senior/Touring Player Doubles, was won by senior

partner Rohn Morton and his Touring Player partner, Parker

Bohn III. Morton is now 64 and Bohn is now a PBA Hall of

Famer with 34 PBA Tour titles, competing on both the PBA

and PBA50 Tours.

In the 14 previous PBA/PBA50 Doubles events, the only

players to win a title more than once were New Jersey

native Teata Semiz who won in 1986 with Joe Berardi, 1991

with Rick Steelsmith and 1993 with Rich Abboud; PBA

Hall of Fame legend Dick Weber, who won in 1989 with

Marc McDowell and 1992 with Justin Hromek, and PBA

Tour member Rowdy Morrow, who won in 1987 with

Mickey Spiezio and 1990 with Hall of Famer Dave Soutar.

The tournament also is unique in that players have no idea

who their partner will be until qualifying is over. This year,

after practice and pro-am squads kick off the tournament on

Wednesday, Aug. 5, all PBA50 players will bowl their first

eight-game qualifying round at 8 a.m. ET, and the PBA

Tour players will bowl their first round at 3 p.m. Friday, the

squads will be reversed, with the PBA players bowling

another eight games at 8 a.m. followed by the PBA50 play-

ers at 3 p.m.

Then, based on 16-game pinfall totals, PBA50 and PBA

players will be paired based upon where they qualifying:

top No. 1 qualifiers will become partners, the No. 2 quali-

fiers from each group will be paired together, etc. all the

way to the No. 32 qualifiers (based on full fields of 96 in

each division). The top eight teams will earn byes through

two single-elimination match play rounds, while teams nine

through 16 will earn one bye.

Saturday’s finals will begin with best-of-five-game Baker

format single-elimination match play for teams qualifying

17th through 32nd place at 8 a.m. In Baker format doubles,

each player will bowl five frames to complete a game.

Round One winners and qualifiers 9-16 will bowl best-of-

five matches at 10:30 a.m., with winners joining the top

eight qualifiers for the Round of 16 at 2 p.m. The eight sur-

vivors will bowl a best-of-three-game round at 4:30, fol-

lowed by the one-game semifinal round at 7 p.m. and the

championship match immediately following.
