The hisTory of Nautical Days goes back to the early 1960s.
Nautical Days - Steeped in community historyWith a celebration as long-standing as Comox Nautical Days, there are bound to be some gems when one looks back at the annals. A sift through old programs, committee documents and newspaper clippings is like walking into history. For many Co-mox Valley residents, it’s like a trip down memory lane; for others, an educational
experience.Did you know:• Comox Nautical Days was originally a one-day festival, simply known as Comox Day. • Robert Hamilton was the original chairman of Comox Day. The inaugural Comox Day was Aug. 20, 1960 and featured, among other events, a parade,
a Tug-o-War and a Highland Dancing Competition.• There was a Comox Queen crowned every year in the early days of the festival. Among the prizes for the recipients was a key to the town. Some of the winners included Sandra Shearer (1962), Barbara Billie (1963) and Colleen Buttons (1964).
• The Comox Golf Club hosted a Comox Day tournament. Entry fee was $1.•The monetary prizes for the parade entries at the first Comox Day Parade were: $50 for Best All Around Float; $30 for Best Commercial Float; $20 for Best Novelty Float.• The Royal Canadian Air Force Golden Hawks, the predecessors to the
Snowbirds, performed at Comox Day in 1963. The aerobatic flight team retired in 1964. There was also a Red Knight flyover.• The children’s fishing derby was one of the events in the original Comox Day festival, and is still going strong. • Early festivals finished with a Main Street Square Dance.

Royal Canadian Navy - The Naden Band
Nautical Days Road Race Achieves 45th Year
Saturday, Aug. 2, noon, Marina Park
Comprising 35 professional full-time musicians whose primary role within the Royal Canadian Navy is to support naval operations, ceremonial events, and generate public awareness, helping to facilitate a greater understanding of the role the RCN serves in protecting Cana-dian interests at home and abroad. Over the past 74 years, the Naden Band has established and maintained a repu-tation of presenting audiences at home and abroad with musical performances of the highest calibre, while taking pride in making a difference within the communities it serves.Under the direction of Lieutenant (N) Matthew Clark (CD), the band per-forms in a variety of large and small ensembles, ranging from symphonic concert band, marching band, jazz band, Dixieland band, rock and contemporary ensembles, as well as brass and wood-wind quintets. Within the RCN, the Naden Band performs a number of ceremonial duties such as parades (Remembrance Day, Battle of Atlantic, Changes of Com-mand), ship departures and arrivals, and military dinners. The band’s presence at such events helps to preserve naval customs and traditions while heighten-ing morale and esprit de corps.Musical support is integral to many governmental functions, including the opening of the provincial legislature, official visits from heads of state, and other events in which the Lieutenant Governor, Prime Minister of Canada, Governor General of Canada or the Royal Family are present. The Naden Band strives to serve as a
role model within the local community by using music as a means to make positive change in the lives of others. In addition to supporting the Military
Family Resource Centre and the United Way Government Workplace Charitable Campaign, the band maintains a number of community partnerships and outreach
programs, including local music Cadets Corps and educational school concerts. The band has recently engaged in meaningful musical collaborations in the
Greater Victoria Area including concerts with the University of Victoria’s School of Music and the Victoria Philharmonic Choir.
The NadeN BaNd returns the to Comox Nautical days.
The Comox Nautical Days 4 Mile Road Race will once again be held in conjunction with this year’s BC Weekend celebrations at Comox Nautical Days. The race has taken place continuously for the last 45 years and, as such, is the longest continuously held road race in BC.The event is family orientated, with the majority of participants taking part to enjoy the fun aspect of the event. However, for those wishing to take the event seriously it is a fast course over an unusual distance (four miles is approximately 6.5 km).
The race starts at 9 a.m. on Monday Aug. 4 at the Comox Town Hall, 1809 Beaufort Ave. , Comox. Registration is at the same location from 8 until 8:45. The entry fee is $10, which has remained the same for many a year. There are age category awards, as well as a prize for the first male and female runners to finish. There will be a plentiful supply of yummy post-race refreshments and some exciting draw prizes, all included within the entry fee.The route for the race is along Beaufort Ave. ,
Comox Ave. , Balmoral Ave. , Torrence Rd., Noel Ave., Linshart Rd., Anderton Rd. and finishes on Comox Ave. Please note for safety reasons strollers and pets are not permitted. The event provides an opportunity to begin the day’s celebrations, taking in the parade and other entertainments immediately after – an ideal reason for those family members to come out to support their loved ones. The race is organized by Comox Valley Road Run-
ners, who are proud to hold the record of longest continuously held road race. Proceeds raised from the event are used to support many local charities, with numerous donations made annually. The club will supply over 50 volunteers to ensure the race is both safe & successful.Join us in a fun race as part of a great holiday event and support your local community in the process. For more information or if you have any questions, contact the race director Graham Garner at [email protected].

There is no shortage of entertainment at Nautical Days this year. In fact, with so much going on, the pressing question is how to fit everything into your schedule. Here is a list of entertainers and a brief sypnosis of their shows that you might find helpful in planning your weekend.
David James & Big River Monday Aug. 4, 9-10 p.m.DAVID JAMES is one of the world’s leading, most convincing tribute artists in the music business. Most tribute bands consciously try to look, act and sound like their idols. Dave doesn’t have to try. A living prodigy to one of history’s true musical icons, he is Almost . . . . . Johnny Cash.David nails Johnny’s mannerisms and voice down. In fact, he was honored to provide Cash’s voice to the soon to be released movie “My Father and the Man in Black”, proving that he is the most authentic Johnny Cash Tribute artist in the business. He sings all of the great Cash songs you love, including, I Walk the Line, Sol-itary Man, Get Rhythm, Folsom Prison, Ring of Fire, and new songs like Hurt and Rusty Cage.
Big River ToDD SACeRTy is a highly respected and talented bass player. With over 20 years of touring and recording experience behind him, Todd was a “must-have” when the band was formed. Todd’s standards are of the
highest. He is steadfastly committed to reproducing an authentic sound, and for that reason his presence in the band is essential.Todd – “Johnny Cash and his music are so revered by so many. It’s not really about us. I want to play my part in keeping the man in black alive”.COLIN STEVENSON was “hand-picked” for his role as the drummer of. His experience and his ability to stay faithful to style, with the addition of crucial dynamics were deciding factors when Colin was headhunted.Colin – “Cash was the man, it’s as sim-ple as that. We bring back to the people what they are missing since his death, and long may it continue”.DUNCAN SYMONDS was born in Toronto. He moved to the west coast at an early age and soon after began his pursuit of music. After completing his BA in music, he quickly became a fixture on the music scene, touring and recording with several successful acts.
Time Well WastedSunday, Aug. 3 – 6:30 – 8 p.m.TIMe WeLL WASTeD is an outstand-ing 11-piece dance band playing the greatest hits of your well-wasted youth. Dance the night away to the rockin’ classics of the Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, and Chicago. Get your groove on to Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and James Brown. Then get down...get funky to Kool & the Gang, Tower of Power, Michael Jackson, Earth
Wind & Fire, Donna Summer, and many more great hits.Fronted by dynamic singers Charity Munro and Jaquelyn Block and backed
by a five-piece horn section, hot guitar and keyboards TIMe WeLL WASTeD delivers a dynamic sound that will rock your socks off.TIMe WeLL WASTeD is entertaining, professional, and fun and available to work with you to make your next func-tion a resounding success.
Helen AustinHosting the Comox Nautical Days Pet Parade on Saturday Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. and Performing at 11 a.m.As an award winning alt folk singer songwriter, Helen was asked to write a children’s album as she was told her more upbeat songs really resonated with children and that is how her first kids CD was born. Always Be A Unicorn went on to be nominated for a Juno, win a John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize, won first place in the Inter-national Songwriting Competition and won a Canadian Folk Award. She went on to write a follow up album
for kids called Colour It, which won a 2014 Juno Award. Helen continues to write and record music for adults, including with her new band, Big Little Lions, while still perform-ing and making music for younger au-diences.
Balkan BabesSunday Aug. 3 – 12:30 p.m.The Balkan Babes emerged more than 10 years ago when a group of women in Victoria, B.C. decided to explore the choral traditions of Eastern Europe’s Balkan region. Over the years, the casual singing group became a dedicated vocal ensemble, and the Balkan Babes gained local recognition singing at festivals and concerts throughout Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, including Victoria’s Luminara Festival, the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria Folkfest, the Islands Folk Festival, and the Victoria Conservatory of Music Summer Festival.

In 2008 the Babes stepped onto the national stage as first place winners in the Pan Cultural Traditions category of CBC Radio 2’s biennial amateur choral competition, ‘Choral 2008’. That same year they released Divna, described as “an entrancing album of world music from one of the city’s much loved choirs” (John Threlfall, Monday Magazine). In early 2013, the Balkan Babes performed in Victoria, Cowichan, and Saltspring Island to celebrate the release of their latest CD, Volio, an album that explores themes of love, longing, and loss through the medium of folk music. While the Balkan Babes strive for an
authentic sound in vocal production and pronunciation, they also open up many songs to their own contemporary interpretations and arrangements.
Andrea Smith Sunday Aug. 3 – 4 p.m.Andrea Smith, a Nanaimo resident who was born in Kamloops, is a well respect-ed musician. She won Vancouver Island Music Awards Female Songwriter of the Year in 2007 and First Place in Songwrit-ing at the Shuswap Lakes International Writers Festival in 2005.She has played with some of Cana-da’s greatest musicians including Don Thompson, Pat Coleman, Robbie King and Ken Lister.

It’s her voice that jumps out at you…she makes a clear, direct hit and seduces you with a bit of smoky overtone. And you might as well not look back, and just hold on for the ride.Brodie Dawson was born in Hamilton, Ontario and grew up at first unaware of the magnitude of those musical seeds developing within her. Her father Brent Dawson a successful soul/blues musician, helped to form the grassroots core of the Hamilton music scene, pals with players such as Richard Newell a.k.a. King Biscuit Boy, Lance Kiernan, and Danny Lockwood. Being immersed in a life of music, Brodie began to absorb this incredible energy that would soon be transformed into her own magical style. It was at age 19 that she began migrat-ing west and with this, embarked on what would be a well-travelled journey of searching and finding her way.
