Opposite Directions An AdditionalRelease Technique

Have you ever thrown a flat stone toward a lake or pond andmade it skip across the water several times before it finally sank?As kids, many of us used to have contests to see who could make itskip the most often. Holding that stone between the thumb andforefinger, the faster you could throw it and spin it, the more oftenit would skip across the water’s surface. If you visualize how thisis done, you’ll remember that the snap of the wrist into a cuppedposition was what made it possible for the forefinger to create thenecessary speed and rotation for a successfully spinning throw.

This is somewhat similar to the normal bowling release, cuppedwrist and triggering snap with the fingers so many bowlers use tocreate the desired revs and rotational angle for a successful release. Most all of us are familiar with this technique because it’s so popu-lar. But I mention it only for comparison to a completely differentrelease, which we’ll now discuss.

Next question…have you ever thrown a frisbee? Well, even ifnot, we’ve all seen others throw one, so you pretty much knowhow it’s done. With a wrist collapsing snap at the release, the frisbeeis made to shoot forward, with a spin which sails it through the airdue to its flat surface. So…the difference between skipping thestone and throwing the frisbee is that a cupped and cocked wrist isused for the stone, while a collapsed and uncocked wrist creates thefrisbee.

But what does this have to do with bowling? Well, there is arelease, which uses that same basic principle to create ball rotation. The difference from the normal release used by most bowlers isthat instead of following the curvature of the ball with the hand andfingers to create the rotation, in this technique the principle of mesh-ing gear rotation is used (see illustration 1). As we all know, meshedgears always rotate in opposite directions. So the smaller drivinggear (the hand) will rotate the larger gear (the ball) the oppositeway.

Illustration 1The Gear Action

(see text)

Left Handers Mirror Reverse

THE METHODThe stages the hand/fingers go through to achieve this release

are shown in Illustration 2. During most of the downswing thewrist is cupped and slightly cocked to the left (right for left handers). Then, to create the frisbee type release, the wrist quickly uncocksto the right (left for left handers). This action creates a quick thumbrelease, simultaneously snapping the fingers outward from the bot-tom of the ball, thus flicking the finger holes to the right from thebottom of the ball (left for left handers). As the little rotationalarrows in illustration 2 indicate, the hand really is turning in theopposite direction of the ball during the release, just like the gears.

Illustration 2

This frisbee finger/hand action achieves three main things interms of ball reaction. 1) The quick finger snap as the wrist uncockshelps create revs. 2) The outward direction of the finger snap tendsto keep the hand behind the ball longer at the bottom of the down-swing, virtually eliminating the dreaded power weakening earlyhand turn so many bowlers, including even some professionals, have trouble overcoming. 3) In this release the thumb exits thethumb hole in an outward direction instead of curling around theball, thus helping eliminate the damaging overturning of the handin the follow through. which causes chicken winging and also weak-ens the shot in terms of ball torque. Since torque is an importantforce in resisting too much ball deflection at the pocket, it’s easy tosee how this release can be of help in pin fall increase.

DEVELOPING CONTROLMany bowlers will notice a control problem when first attempt-

ing this release. This is because the drastic outward motion in thefrisbee type finger/hand action has a tendency to make the entirearm want to follow suit and swing outward as well, forcing thefollow through too far away from the body. The obvious resultmay be missing the mark several boards outside, possibly even agutter ball. But fear not…this is temporary. What usually helps incorrecting this problem is to focus on swinging the follow throughin a straight line with the bowling shoulder all the way to the finish.

Another trick in getting the feel of this release is to use a littlepractice exercise which I’ll describe below. Again, based on thetwo meshed gears turning in opposite directions, you can test thisrelease as follows:

·Get into a kneeling position, cradling your ball in your nonbowling hand about 3 or 4 inches above the floor;

·Put your bowling fingers in the holes at the bottom of the ballthe way it would normally be at the bottom of the swing, but leavethe thumb out;

·Now…move your finger holes outward (in the opposite direc-tion you want the ball to turn as described above) at the same timeletting the ball drop to the floor from your other hand. You’ll feelthe fingers turning the holes (just like the gears) and the ball will hitthe floor rotating in the opposite direction of the hand. Be sure todo a little follow through as you complete this motion.

Repeating this little exercise just a few times will help developthe feel of this release so it can be done on the lanes without riskinggutter balls. My personal thanks go to PBA Hall of Fame cham-pion Don Johnson, who taught me about this gear action many yearsago while still on tour.

THE FANNED FOLLOW THROUGH MOTION‘Fanning’ is a term used to describe a wrist/hand action which is

done in conjunction with the follow through. It can be executed incombination with any release, including but not limited to the frisbeerelease. It is used by those professionals who employ it for eitheror both of two reasons. First it can help create a more powerful ballrotation; second, it is yet another way to aid in avoiding topping theball, pulling the shot and chicken winging during the follow through.

For this technique, whether your particular style of followthrough finishes higher or lower than someone else’s doesn’t mat-ter. (Actually, in modern bowling a follow through which finishesat about shoulder level with a pretty straight arm pointing in thedirection of the break point is preferred. Coach of the pros JohnJowdy teaches this and has helped many improve their games withit. But for our purposes it is not necessary for anyone to get in-volved in changing their style of follow through.)

At any rate, here’s how it works: As your follow through getsup to about shoulder level, think of your thumb as pointing toward12 o’clock above the bowling shoulder. Be sure that 12 o’clock isdirectly aligned with that shoulder (not in line with your ear or overyour head). Now, here’s the important part: At this instant, quicklyturn the wrist slightly outward so that the thumb points toward 1o’clock (11 o’clock for left handers). This slight wrist turn is donequickly, with a sort of snap of the wrist, the shock of which can befelt when done correctly.

When trying this the first few times, many bowlers will be sur-prised to notice just how much they’ve been habitually overturningthe hand during the follow through without even realizing it, thus

unknowingly topping the ball. But when done correctly, the fanis really the gear action again, except done during the followthrough.

One way prove to yourselfthat this fanning action elimi-nates chicken winging, is to trythe fan movement a few timeswithout a ball. You’ll immedi-ately notice that even if you bendyour elbow during the followthrough, that elbow will stay infront of your bowling shoulderrather than sticking out, chickenwing style. By the way, the fanis almost exactly like the wayyou use your thumb when try-ing to hitch a ride on the high-way. So it might be easier forsome bowlers if they imaginethemselves hitch hiking whenthey do their follow through.

As I said, the fan can be usedwith any release, not just thefrisbee. But once you try it,you’ll no doubt find it easier tolearn to do it automatically whendone in conjunction with thefrisbee release. The reason forthis is because with this releasethe thumb is already pointed to-ward approximately one o’clock(11 o’clock for left handers) asthe hand exits the ball, so it iseasier to finish that followthrough in the fan position.

THE BOTTOM LINERemember, this does take

practice to become part of yourmuscle memory. But it reallyworks! When I recently taughtit to Betty Morris, PWBABowler of the Decade in the1970s, her comment was, “Rolf,I haven’t felt my fingers burnlike this since I left the tour!”This was because it helped keepher hand behind the ball longer, without which the fingers can’treally create maximum torque.

SAN BERNARDINO–Thecordial one, Du Quach made thetrip to Arrowhead Lanes worthhis while as he won his firstABTA title downing top seedTerry Tucker in one of the mostthrilling finishes in a title game222-220 to take home a nice$1,500 top prize to Rosemead.

Du, “ Andy” never misses anABTA Event which is One day.He stayed true to form Saturdayshowing up at the 7 PM Squadwaiting for his good pal JimmyWong to sign in together. ButJimmy didn’t make it to theevent, so Du went on and quali-fied at 7 PM. Then advanced tothe semifinals with his nice +77.The scoring was good, men tak-ing +69, and the ladies +30 tomake the semifinals board.

Du topped a less than normalturnout of 128 entrants at Arrow-head, the popular Center locatedin San Bernardino. 37 bowlersadvanced to semis which alsoadded Super Seniors JamesSims, Phil Holland and AngieNillo to the board. Being a Su-per Senior Pays off in the ABTA.Just ask old pal Lonzell Burnettwho is the consummate SuperSenior :-) but he failed to makethe board this week. Each weekthe ABTA adds two males andone lady Super Senior to theSemis over and above the regu-lar qualifiers. Men must be 63+and Ladies 55+ for this perk.

Leading the Semis wereironically Du Quach and TerryTucker, who tied at +109 so theywould bowl a full game roll-offwhile we were in the top 16single elims finals with the win-ner to sit out and bowl for thetitle. The loser to enter the roll-offs in round #2. Du Quach wonthe roll-off game. He would sitout and bowl for the title withTerry entering in the 2nd round, receiving a first round bye in the

top 16 single elim finals. It tooka +22 for the men, and +10 forthe three guaranteed ladies tomake the top 16 single elims.

The top sixteen took to thelanes, and losing in round oneof the single elims finals wereMark Montelongo, AnnaBorromeo, Ken Renner, VicGarcia, Rey Edrosa, KayJohnson, and Imee Ahorro. Theygot $100 finishing in 10-16thplaces.

Round two had Tucker enterthe field and down Manny LaGuardia 230-192. Steve Howerdowned “El Presidente” DanGuevarra 243-219. TerryMassengill on a roll got to MarkHuertas 204-194. Bret Rose gotto Rey Josefat 205-194. The los-ers of round two got checks of$110 each in places 6-9th.

Round three saw Massengillstay tough in a 232-207 win overRose. Tucker downed tough Mr.Hower 205-188 so Bret, andSteven were 4th and 5th, and$115 with Terry, and Terry :-)(Massengill and Tucker) to meetfor the right to advance to thetitle game vs Du Quach.

This match was a good oneand close at first but Tucker puton a striking performance andwas on his game pulling awayfrom a trying Massengill 261-230. Massengill bowled so well, and on many other nights wouldhave been the winner. ButTucker advanced to the titlegame and Massengill was third,$200, and let me tell you thisman is on the improve ever sinceour Las Vegas Event. Greatbowling Terry, and the otherTerry (Tucker) would meet DuQuach for the title. Third placeis Mr. Massengills finest in theABTA and with all this improve-ment a championship is wellwithin his reach.

The Title Match was set and

both bowlers were on their gameso we expected a good match. And a Good One it was.! Quachelected to start. He spared andsplit.Tucker opened and struckthen opened again but he fired aturkey in frames 4-5-6 to take alead. Du doubled in frames 5-6and after 8 frames Tucker had a13 pin lead. Quach had a strikein frame. Tucker finished in the10th with a strike, split 9 out191/220 game. So we nowknow Du needed at least adouble and 9 to win it. He ap-peared a bit nervous but the re-sults were cool for the fine guyas he got two pocket strikes andnow needed 9 for the win. Hedid one better with another strikeescaping with a 200/222 and atwo pin victory. The crowd wasthrilled and appreciative of sucha great close match. In this oneit is too bad there had to be aloser. Congrats to Du Quach, who is one of the finest Guys toever bowl in the ABTA. He isalways there with a ready smileand great attitude, so it is onlyfitting to have him as our latestchampion. Jimmy Wong, youmissed a good one at Arrow-head! as did all of Du’s otherfriends, Ada, David Quon,Clara, Shirley and Ken Lee, andmany more of the great mem-bers from Bowling Square. CHATSWORTH–The JATgot back on the lanes with a tripto the Valley and AMF RocketBowl. A handful of new faces, returning strangers and seasonedveterans made up the 31-bowlerfield. Thanks to all the bowlers’understanding about the addi-tional $5 to cover $2.50/gamelineage. We hope for some ofyou the trip to the Valley wasworth it in gas money savings!

On the lanes, contrary to pastvisits to Rocket, scoring wastame as carry was hard to findand moving pair to pair was anadventure in lane conditions. After 5 games of qualifying,two-hand sensation Matt Joneshad the lead at +150, low toqualify was Daniel Watanabe at-1. The bowlers then took thelanes in our trial dual-cut match-play. After 2 games and a posi-tion round, Mark French hadtaken the lead on games of 224-258-225 and a 2-1 record.Rounding out the top-8 and justsneaking in the second cut wasPreston Fukumizu at +99. Twomore position-round games andthe top-4 finalists were set. Lap-ping the field with strong finish-ing games of 229-279 was MattJones at +387. Matt had two 279games, both the high games ofthe tournament. Fresh off of anextended vacation from JAT(traveling to U.S. OlympicTraining Camp, representing theUnited States in the DominicanRepublic- more important I sup-pose) was Mark French at +264.Mason Sherman lit it up the lastgame shooting 258 with the winand jumping from 6th to 3rd andinto the finals. Rounding out thetop-4 was Matt Cormack whohad just enough to hold off al-ternate Brian Gonzales.

In the finals Matt Cormackand Mason Sherman moved

down to the low end of the houseto start things off. Cormackstarted hot with the front three, carried a Brooklyn in the 8th, andafter Sherman slammed a swish-ing pocket 7-10 in the 8th itquickly turned ugly. Cormackadvanced 202-153 to meet 2nd

seed Mark French. A greatmatch-up as the up and comingCormack took on the seasonedvet French in a lefty vs. leftybattle. Cormack started slowgoing open-open while Frenchwent 4-bagger up to a 7-pin inthe 6th. French was runningaway with the match and even afoul in the 9th frame couldn’tstop him from advancing 217-171. Next up for French wastwo-hander and tournamentleader Matt Jones. Jones gotstung early with a 4-9 in the 2nd,while French started strike-spare-baggers and just keptstriking. Jones efforts werestopped short with a 4-pin, 8-pin, and 10 pin in his 7th 8th and9th frames and Mark French car-ried his way to a 269-203 win.Congratulations Mark! Glad tohave you home, if only for amonth or so!
