Friday, June 24th was an historic day in this historic parish. For the first time, one of our parishioners received the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice. The Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice is a rare papal honor that is bestowed by the Holy Father on an individual who has given extraordinary service to the Church. Peter Tantillo, the recently-retired principal of our parish school, was the distinguished recipient of this singular honor. Before I say a few things about Pete’s service to the Church, I want to explain briefly the honor itself. The Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice is an award of the Roman Catholic

Church. The English translation of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice is “For Church and Pope,” and is also known as the “Cross of Honor.” The honor was established by Pope Leo XIII on July 17, 1888 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. It was originally bestowed on those women and men who had aided and promoted the jubilee, and by other means assisted in making it and the Vatican Exposition which accompanied it a success. It is currently given for distinguished service to the Church by lay people and clergy. It is the highest honor that can be awarded to the laity by the Pope. The honor takes the form of a gold medal and a scroll. The medal appears as a Greek-shaped four-pointed cross, bearing in its center the images of the Princes of the Apostles, Peter and Paul, and the words “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice,” and the name of the pope who has bestowed – in this case Pope Francis. The Cross is suspended from a yellow and white ribbon and is worn on the left breast. A lapel pin bearing the distinctive marks of the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice is also included. Both the medal and the lapel pin are contained in a beautiful red leather presentation box on which the papal seal is affixed in gold. The scroll is a crisp piece of parchment on which – in Peter Tantillo’s case – is inscribed in Latin the following citation: “Francis Supreme Pontiff of the Holy Roman Church, having discerned the worthiness and dignity of the nominee, bestows the distinguished cross and insignia "For the Church and the Pope" on Mr. Peter Tantillo for the totality of his work in the field of Catholic education. At the same time transmitting the ornamental decorations. Given from the Holy See at the Vatican on the 16th Day of May 2016, the 3rd of our pontificate. Signed. Archbishop Paolo Borgia, Asessore of the Roman Catholic Church.” When I contacted Archbishop Cupich last March in order to begin the process of Pete’s consideration for this papal honor, I wrote: “Peter was a classroom teacher for six years and a principal at several Archdiocesan schools for a total of thirty-five years. Peter has also served as a regional director in our Office of Catholic Schools for four years. He has been the principal of Queen of All Saints School for the past four years. In a very real sense, Peter has given all of his professional life and a large amount of his personal life to the Catholic school education of literally thousands of students and hundreds of faculty and staff. Not only has he distinguished himself as a Catholic educator, but he is an exemplary Catholic layman. He has been an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion in several parishes for many years. He became a certified catechist in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2008. Since he has come to Queen of All Saints, Peter has served on the Pastoral Staff and has provided invaluable assistance in the pastoral governance of this parish. Throughout these many years of service to the Church, his record is entirely unblemished. I can personally testify to his authentically inspiring and resolute dedication to the Catholic faith, to Christ and to his Church. In my view, he is a worthy candidate indeed for Pope Leo XIII’s Cross of Honor.”

From the Pastor

The St. Vincent DePaul gift-card collection will be held on Sunday, August 14th at all the Masses. This drive is an

incredible help to many in the area.

Archbishop Cupich then kindly petitioned Pope Francis for the award and received word from the Vatican Embassy in Washington that it had been granted just a few weeks ago. I am very grateful to Archbishop Cupich for his personal support for this truly singular honor, not only for Pete but for the whole parish. Because Archbishop Cupich was here for a visit a few weeks ago, he was able to present Pete with his papal honor personally right in the living room of Queen of All Saints Rectory. Through Archbishop Cupich I am grateful to the Holy Father for graciously bestowing the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice on our recently retired school principal. As far as I know, Pete is only the second Catholic school principal in the history of the Archdiocese of Chicago to receive this most distinguished award. This experience has drawn the people of Queen of All Saints Parish closer to the Holy Father because he has reached across the globe to single out our parish in this remarkable way. The Pastor of the Universal Church has touched Queen of All Saints Basilica in Chicago, Illinois in a truly unique way through this gracious papal honor. All we can do in response is return to him our gratitude, our loyalty and our prayers. Ad multos annos. Monsignor John Pollard

Infant Baptism: Welcoming Babies to the Catholic Faith

Having a baby is an exciting and joyful time—albeit at times an exhausting one too! Your faith community at Queen of All Saints is anxious to share your joy and welcome your baby through Baptism. We are beginning a new preparation process for parents seeking Baptism for their babies. Understand-ing your baby’s Baptism and its effects and your role as parents in your baby’s faith is just as critical as finding the right pediatrician or nourishing the baby properly.

Starting in August, the preparation sessions will be led by some of our new baptismal prep team members: Carol and Pete Tomaselli, Lauren Gaffey, Mike and Manette Lill, John and Kathleen Linn, Ken and Julie Sotak. The preparation consists of one session conducted at the parish from 7:30-9 on scheduled evenings. Parents are invited to come at 7:15 for social time and refreshments. The session is required for each Baptism—whether it is the first child in the family or later children. After all, each child is special, and so is the Baptism of each child. Parents who attended a session for previous children will be asked to share their experience during the preparation session and assist new parents with ways to help their child grow in faith. Preparation sessions will take place in the Holy Name Room. The coming months are scheduled for: August 25, Sept. 27, and Oct. 27. To schedule a Baptism and register for the preparation session, please come to the rectory. You are welcome to attend the preparation before the baby’s birth if you desire.

Religious Education News

Religious Education Registration 2016-2017 Registration continues for the coming school year for Religious Education classes. If you have not already done so, simply download the registration forms from the parish website and bring the completed form to the R.E. office along with payment. The dead-line for registration is August 15th. Any registrations after that date will not have a choice of placement; students will be placed in classes that remain open for added stu-dents, or be put on a waiting list. Help Needed There is a need for additional volunteers in our parish religious education program for the 2016-2017 school year. We are looking for catechists on both Sundays and Tuesdays, crossing guards, attend-ance clerks, and general assistance. If you are interested and would like more information, please call Aline Reynolds at the RE Office (773) 286-1939. Your reward will be heavenly. Teen Mission Trip At the 11 AM Mass, we will be sending out 5 teenage young men for a week of service through Catholic Heart Work Camp. Under the mentorship of Mark Couzin, these young men will be serving the people of the southside of Chicago. Please keep them in prayer as they undertake this life changing op-portunity for both the people they serve and the young men themselves.

As for me and my house… we shall serve the Lord.

Hear the call to Liturgical Ministry The Liturgy is the source and summit of all we do as Baptized Catholics. To serve your fellow parishioners through Liturgical ministry is a special gift in-deed. We are currently in need of new Eucharistic ministers. This ministry is open to all parishioners, high school age or older. According to Liturgical guidelines, those who would consider this ministry should be a baptized Catholic in good standing with the Church, who attends Sunday Mass regularly. The minister will be a person of faith who believes in God, follows Christ and trusts in the Holy Spirit.

Experience the joy of serving the Body

and Blood of Christ to the Body of Christ Eucharistic ministers are those who share the Body and Blood with the assembly at Mass. It is a wonderful calling to participate in the sacred nourishment of your fellow parishioners.

Parish News

The ministry of Extraordinary Minister of Communion is open to any parishioner, high school age or older. Because of the flexibility in serving with no specific schedule, high school students are especially encouraged to consider this ministry. Ministers simply sign up in the Sacristy for a station at whichever Mass they happen to attend.

There are two training sessions scheduled for NEW Eucharistic ministers. You only need to attend one of these: Tuesday, August 16 at 7:00 p.m. OR Saturday, August 20 at 12:00 noon.

WRES (Workers for Racial and Ethnic Solidarity)

Dear Msgr. Pollard, The WRES group would like to thank you for the gracious welcome we received on Saturday, July 16th at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. This was the group’s fifteenth year together and their sixth Solidarity Liturgy at Queen of All Saints, where you, Msgr. Prist, Fr. Grace, Fr. Tom, Fr. Simon and Fr. Conyers have always spoken healing words of reconciliation and love for all God’s children. The group believes it is only by telling our stories and listening with mutual respect that we might make Christ’s love visible in our work and recreation, schools and communities. Our monthly gatherings at Holy Family parish, Chicago, provide a welcoming venue where people of all ages, races, ethnicities and faith traditions can come together to share their stories and learn how to live out Catholic Social Teachings on issues of diversity that affect our lives today. WRES is part of the original workshops group formed in 2001 by the former Archdiocesan Office for Racial Justice and includes parishioners from six parishes: Queen of All Saints, St. Raymond de Penafort, Holy Family, Holy Angels, St. Mary of the Woods and St. Malachy’s + Precious Blood. For more information, people are invited to contact [email protected] or [email protected]. With blessings and gratitude for your continued support, we remain Workers for Racial and Ethnic Solidarity (WRES)

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?

REASON 35 The Acts of the Apostles tells us that from the very beginning of the

Church, when there were only a few in number, the community “devoted themselves...to the breaking of the bread and the prayers.” Now the Church can be found in every country in the world. Its members number in the millions and they still gather to pray and to break bread together. Christians pray together by nature; it’s what they do to express their identity. And the Sunday Mass is the most important kind of communal prayer in the Catholic experience. This is not to say that personal prayer is not also an important part of the Christian life. It is, but a well-rounded prayer life includes both personal prayer and communal prayer. Just like practicing free throws improves a player’s skill in basketball games and playing basketball games improves a player’s skill in shooting free throws, personal prayer leads to worship in common and worship in common naturally leads back to personal prayer.

“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Luke 11:9

Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that in our cul-ture we often confuse what we really need with what we simply want.

Many people need very little. However, we usual-ly want so much more.

A good steward only asks God for what he needs.

Vocations to the Priesthood

The Archdiocese of Chicago Vocations Office helps men discern a call to the priesthood through retreats, visits to the seminary and discern-ment opportunities. As well, the Vocation Office works with men to deter-mine their eligibility to apply to the seminary for the diocesan priesthood in Chicago. Finally, the Vocations Office actively works to create a cul-ture supportive of vocations through promotion, education, and parish based efforts to raise awareness.

More information on becoming a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago is available by contacting:

Fr. Francis Bitterman Archdiocesan Vocations Office 312-534-8298 Email: [email protected]

Please consider what we can give back to our parish,

in our time, talent and treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us.

School Supplies Needed

During the month of August we will be collecting school supplies for the children at the food pantry. The stores are starting their

sales now. If you can help us get paper, pencils, pens, book bags, notebooks, folders, crayons,

markers, etc - please put them in the bins in the back of church. If you need us to pick up your donations, call Pat Steiner at 773-282-3746.

You will be helping the children get off to a good start in school.

Thanks so much from the Albany Park

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.

The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.
