    Summer

    Charging StationsStony Brook University

will add six new electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) on main campus by this summer, bringing the total number of EVCS at on campus to 10. The new charging stations compliment the Universitys four existing stations, which are located at the Advanced Energy Center in the Research and Development Park installed approximately three years ago. These

stations are being added to support a growing number of students, faculty, staff and visitors who drive plug-in vehicles and are seeking energy resources while on campus.

Each station will supply electricity to two parking spaces in the following parking lots; Stadium parking lot: Administration parking garage (on the 3rd level); Life Sciences lot; Heavy Engineering lot; and, near the Life Sciences

2 parking lot located off of Lake Drive.

The existing EVCS located in the Administration parking garage stations were provided to the University through Governor Andrew Cuomos 2013 Charge New York Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to create a statewide network of up to 3,000 public and workplace charging stations over the next fi ve years and to put up to 40,000 plug-in

vehicles on the road during that period.

SBU charging station fee is $3 per hour, per space; instructions are located at the station, and all vehicles parked in an EVCS space must be charging.

The new charging stations have been installed in close proximity to the Academic Mall, thereby encouraging our community to utilize plug-in vehicles which have less of an impact on the natural

environment, explained James Ambroise, SBU Transportation & Parking Site Manager.

SBU plans to evaluate electric vehicle charging station use and consider additional locations, as warranted by demand and University feedback. For additional information, please contact the SBU Offi ce of Sustainability at 631.632.6219 or via e-mail at; sustainability@stonybrook.edu.

In order to minimize our impact on the natural environmental, parking meters now exclusively accept credit or debit card payments at solar powered metered lot pay stations. Discontinuing the need to collect coins on campus will save approximately 560 gallons of gasoline annually.

I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, its more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grasspretty much anywhere its been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday.

Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequas John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited.

Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect.

Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on.

The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began.

    Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes.

As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. The next time they forecast a chance of anything, lets do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.

As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. Its still a bit damp.

Lately, there has been a lot of talk over the issue of environmental conservation. It is crucial to the well being of our ecosystem that we look after all of natures life. Maintaining the levels of all animals, big or small, is no easy task, but it must be done.

In order to ensure a healthy, abundant environment for everyone, it is a necessity to undertake the protection of quite literally, everything. As someone who lives on Fire Island, I see everyday how deer, birds and even insects are affected by litter, pollution and the overall negative human impact.

    I also live within a

preservation on this little Barrier Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to fl ourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and, most importantly, other healthy wildlife.

Dolphins are becoming an ever present fi xture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks ago, a sea turtle

was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature.

Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Islands wildlife. In order to successfully maintain a healthy biome for all of our descendants, we must fi rst monitor and protect our wildlife.

Visit my website, www.EndEminentDomain.com for more information on how you can make a lasting impact on your ecosystem.

Job Search Boot CampThe Town of Islip will

host a FREE Job Search Boot Camp for residents, which will consist of a series of classes, taught by the professionals at Executive Consultants of New York, aimed to provide the necessary tools and skills for securing a job during tough economic times.

Sponsored by the Islip Industrial Development Agency, the Job Search Boot Camp has been designed to break the daunting task of job hunting into nine simplified topics for registrants. Each topic provides necessary skills to attain employment via networking and is considered fundamental

no matter the state of the economy. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, September 10th, 17th, October 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th, and November 5th, in the Town Board Room at Islip Town Hall, 655 Main Street, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m..

The Town offered this program to residents in the fall of 2012 and had great success, educating approximately 50 job seekers. Immediately following the completion of the program, there was a 26% job attainment rate with more than 50% of the group actively interviewing and generating more than 25 interviews throughout the eight weeks. In the

two months following completion of the Boot Camp, the percentage went from 26% to 33%, and then in five months time, increased to 46%. People who completed this program found interviews and jobs in industries such as insurance, healthcare, marketing, information technology, and various administrative positions.

Though the economy may have improved slightly, these are still very trying times. It is imperative that we offer any assistant we can to those struggling to find a job within our Town, said Supervisor Tom Croci. Some of our most talented residents are unemployed simply because they lack certain networking opportunities. Our goal is to teach job seekers these skill sets and encourage them to stay confident and determined in the quest to find employment.

Spaces for U.S. Veterans will be reserved in advance and coordinated through the office of Islip Town Councilman John C.

Cochrane, Jr. Its vital that our returning veterans are provided with the tools and skills they need in order to attain employment in our Town. The Town of Islip is committed to ensuring that happens.

The Job Search Boot Camp will be taught by Maria Frey of Executive Consultants of New York, a business that specializes in career coaching and development. Participants will learn better strategies for time management and developing job objectives; get assistance with personal branding; learn how to better build and pitch their profile; given resume and cover letter advice; coached for interviews, and given advice about building an effective network to find a job in todays market place.

Space is limited! Registration is open to Town of Islip residents only. Please visit www.islipida.com to register online.

    Hatchery Visit

Once in a while even children from underserved, diverse school districts get a wish come true. Thanks to the National Grid Foundation Welcome Schools and Communities Scholarship Program the wish to spend a day at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium has come true for children from approximately six underserved Long Island elementary schools.

Thus far, a total of 387

students from elementary schools such as Gardner Manor in Bay Shore and Hempsteads Jackson Main Elementary, the David Paterson School and the Franklyn School participated in the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquariums innovative hands-on environmental education programs through generous funding from the National Grid Foundation Welcome Schools and

    Communities Scholarship Program.

National Grids generosity will ultimately enable 600 students from three disadvantaged school districts to visit the Hatchery and to learn how they can help protect the natural environment. The Scholarship Program also provides funding for the Hatcherys unique outreach programs which will benefit approximately 150 Long Island families,

thereby further educating the public about the need to preserve our natural resources, said Steven DeSimone, Hatchery Director.

The Hatchery, which after 99 years of operation as a State facility, opened as a private non-profit educational institution in 1982. Its visitors can tour two aquarium buildings which house many species of freshwater fish, aquatic reptiles and amphibians, all native to New York. There are six outdoor ponds where brook and rainbow trout are raised and sold to enthusiasts who use them to stock their ponds. In addition to the trout ponds, the Hatchery also maintains a warm water fish pond and a turtle pond. Catch & Keep Trout Fishing is a popular addition to Hatchery activities. The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium is open year round, seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June, July and August, open until 6 p.m.

People came from all around to see what they could see. They heard she had a lot of things piled high as they could be.

How did she gather all this stuff? It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears.

For each treasured trinket is a sweet memoryOf her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three.

A sweet blue baby blanket from her fi rst baby born.It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn.

She does not want to part with it for any price, you see.Though now adult, hell be her baby for eternity.

So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn.

They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck.

She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck. She hurries to another pile and opens the next box.

A blond curl tied with ribbon - its the second babys locks.Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her a buck.

And now she feels as though shes been truly struck.

You cant keep all these things they tell her - there just isnt that much room. The new place will be better for you; her heart fi lls with dread and gloom.

Some photos in an album show her late husband in his youth,A letter to the tooth fairy and the third babys fi rst little tooth.

Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom,She remembers as a gift from her loving groom.

She found things she had forgotten and didnt know she had.

Some things made her feel good; others made her sad.The clay handprint ashtray someone made in camp

The high school woodshop project that had become a lamp. She found handmade greeting cards To my Mommy and my Dad.

If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad?

This was her life piled up outside, she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere.

Dont make me feel like Im a problem - Im your mother after all.Dont be impatient with me or bothered when I call.

She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may

keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called fl avonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fi ght against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

First Suffolk Fairway Market To Open TodayFairway Group Holdings

Corp. (Fairway) (NASDAQ: FWM), the parent company of the iconic New York grocery super store Fairway Market, will open a 50,000 square foot store in the DSW Plaza at 3200 Middle Country Road in Lake Grove Long Island, New York on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014. This store will be the first Fairway Market location in Suffolk County on Long Island and the 15th food store in the tri-state New York, New Jersey and Connecticut region.

Were very excited to make Suffolk County our newest home and offer

its residents what those in Nassau County, as well as in New Yorks five boroughs, Westchester County, New Jersey and Connecticut already have access to Fairways unprecedented array of traditional and specialty foods and groceries all under one roof and at great values, said Charles Santoro, Fairway Markets Executive Chairman. The location is ideal; DSW Plaza is also home to such national names as Designer Shoe Warehouse, Toys R Us and Babies R Us, and it is directly across the street from the Smith Haven Mall, so it is right in the

heart of Suffolk County. We are thrilled to

have Fairway as our food anchor, said Sam Shalem, Chairman and CEO of Prestige Properties, the owner of the shopping center. Our customer base is eagerly anticipating a Fairway of its own.

Similar to all Fairway Markets, the new store in Lake Grove will offer an exceptional combination of traditional, organic and specialty foods, chosen from its comprehensive selection of approximately 70,000 SKUs across its store network and including daily-delivered produce, a best of the

best kosher selection, the freshest seafood, custom-cut USDA prime meat, on-the-premises bakery, cheeses from around the world, a classic New York deli counter, and much more.

We look forward to providing customers a fabulous food shopping experience with fresh, natural, organic and conventional foods at terrific prices, said Bill Sanford, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Fairway Market. We are also proud to be creating approximately 400 jobs at this location, and eager to make an impact in the Lake

Grove and surrounding communities by being both a great food market and an active contributor to the surrounding communities.

Howie Glickberg, vice chairman of development, added that from the time Fairway was established 80 years ago, we have worked each and every day to live the words of our slogan Like No Other Market in both our stores and in the neighborhoods in which we are located. We are committed to making a difference.

    Composer VisitsAngela Stewarts

orchestra students at John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools in East Islip recently had the honor of meeting composer

John Caponegro as they were preparing to perform his piece Shoe Symphony for their spring concerts.

Caponegro, who taught elementary orchestra in

the Sachem School District for more than 30 years, told the children how his former students inspired him to compose Shoe Symphony, which features

fun foot stomping and foot shuffling. He spoke about his passion for music and answered questions about his musical composition.

    His genuine personality

and obvious love for music made his visit extremely memorable for the students and for me, said Stewart. It was such a treat to be able to meet the man behind

the music and perform his piece for him in preparation for our concert.

    Bowler Signs On

East Islip High School bowler Megan Kuehne recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play for St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights this fall. She plans to study

nursing, a new program at St. Francis.

With its small bowling program roster of eight athletes, the NCAA Division I school was a terrifi c fi t for Kuehne, who will commute to practice at Strike 10 Lanes at Mill Basin in Brooklyn.

It is a small school and everything is tight-knit and nice, she said, noting that her acceptance was voted on by the St. Francis team itself. The Terriers fi nished second in the Northeast Conference Womens Bowling Championship

this past school year.Kuehne attributes her

EI sports success she fi nished her high school career with a 203 average to working with her coach, Harold Cooley, who mentored her as she became a key piece in the Lady Redmens county, league and state championship season. The team came together and worked so hard, she said. It was a dream come true.
