Strathmore resident and businessowner Hal Lust has been speakingto both county and town council on behal o residents about Highway1. The proposed realignment and bypass is a hot button topic andcounty council saw their chambersfll with concerned residents, just asthe town ofces flled two weeksago.
Unlike Airdrie or Brooks, Strath-more does not have an industrialeconomy to be able to thrive o o,said Lust.
For years Ive heard about thevalue o good armland and that weshould not destroy it. It seems they
are not taking their own advice, said Lust. Many arms in the countywill be aected by the realignment, rendering some parcels o land use-less.
The new alignment isnt fnal-ized, its still in the planning stag-es, its about planning or uturegrowth. Im guessing the alignmentis still 50 years out, maybe even ahundred, said Minister o Transpor-tation, Luke Ouellette in a phoneinterview.
I hadnt realized until just re-cently people were upset. I dontknow exactly what my departmentguys are saying but I have agreedwith Arno (Doerkson) to meet with
the town and the county. Ouellettealso said, bypasses are built whenit is time to put in an interchange. He said he will meet with townand county ofcials within the nextthree to our weeks.
Lust is sending out 6,000 petitionsto residents o Strathmore and allrural areas aected.
The most important thing is toollow the instructions and then getthem mailed o. Without public re-sponse, they will do whatever theywant. We need a united ront, saidLust. We need a 25 per cent returnrate or were doomed.

The sun shone brightly for the 17th
annual Fun Runners Club Show andShine held at Kinsmen Park July 17. Ap-proximately 180 cars, trucks and bikeslled the park, as spectators walkedaround taking in the sights.A face painter was stationed in a golf
cart, recreated to look like a classic cad-dy, and some kids took part in a raceon a Hot Wheels track.
We had some really good comments. The dyno was a real crowd gatherer, much more so than the burnout con-tests we used to have at the Canadian
Tire parking lot. There was a lot goingon and people were quite happy withthat, said Todd Blakney, a member ofthe Strathmore Fun Runners club. Adyno is a chassis dynamometer, which
basically measures the power of a ve-hicle.There were 26 trophies awarded and
almost 40 door prizes given away.
The community was quite support-ive with that, said Blakney. The twoBBQs which were being rafed wentto Bryan Knight, who works at theGlobal Training Centre, and to Gary Pe-terson from the Standard/Rosebud area.
The Fun Runners Club donates moneyraised from their Show and Shine, andthis year they were happy to give away$600 to each of the Strathmore FireDepartment, Wheatland Womens Shel-ter, the Wheatland Food Bank and toSTARS. The club also gave the pop and
beer cans to Matrix Cheerleading at theJump House to help them out. The clubwill be doing more said Blakney, butfor now they need to sit and discuss
whats next.
Show and shinedraws peoplefrom all over
The sun glinted off the freshly polished vehicles which lled Kinsmen Park July 17. The 17th annual
Show and Shine brought in crowds from all over town and surrounding areas. There was plenty forpeople of all ages to take part in, including a candy toss and colouring contest for the kids.

Weve taken the Sunday morningslack and are going to do it on Fridayafternoon now, said Darcy Koester,an organizer of the rodeo. Part of thereason the Rockyford agricultural so-ciety has added back the extra day is
because entries, especially on timedevents, have gone up this year. Timedevents include things like barrel racingand calf roping.
On Saturday, July 24, there will bea free pancake breakfast, followed bythe parade and then a gunght onMain Street. The parade starts at 10
a.m., and the gunght will be at 11a.m.
Professional entertainers were hiredto come down and give the crowd the
look and feel of a real western show-down and gunght. The rodeo willstart at 12:30 p.m. and there will beBBQ beef on a bun available at 5:30p.m. T.C & Company, country and
western performers, will be perform-ing at night for the rodeo, and this yearthere is something new. On Saturdayand Sunday there will be a catch andkeep, but Koester wont give away
what it is or means.People will just have to come down
to the rodeo and see what thats allabout, said Koester. Friday and Satur-day night and Sunday afternoon, thechuck wagon chariots will be puttingon a show. This year will still havesome old favourites such as pack horseraces and the poker bull ght. The ro-deo starts at 1 p.m. Friday, and camp-ing is included with a weekend pass.

The amily cottage
and your fnancesMany families have an emotional attachment to
the cottage. It is a place rich with memories of familygatherings and happy times. However, the prices ofvacation properties have risen dramatically overthe past several years, and without proper tax andestate planning, these memories can be tarnished. Your cottages increase in value can result
in a substantial tax liability when you transferownership, either while you are alive or throughyour will. Two of the most common strategies toreduce or defer the tax liability are the use of lifeinsurance or the transfer of the property to a trust.
The proceeds from a life insurance policy can beused to pay the income taxes on the cottage. Insome cases, your children may be wiling to pay thepremiums on the policy to keep the cottage in thefamily.
Problems may arise if you leave the cottage toyour children as joint owners. You can eliminatesome of these issues by transferring the cottageto a trust. While the transfer triggers an immediate
capital gain, you may be able to reduce the gain byclaiming your cottage as your principal residence.
Finally, thought should be given to annualmaintenance and upkeep. Your children may nothave the nancial resources or wish to accept the
responsibility a cottage represents. This is Sheetal A Pallana, your Edward Jones

specic situation with your tax advisor and/or legal professional

implications of making a particular investment or taking any
other action.

Answers to all questions will appear on the

Q: What happens if I dont have a will?
When a person dies without a will, it is referred
to as intestate. The family is often uncertain as
to who is in control of the estate and the funeral
arrangements. If the deceased has a surviving
spouse, that person becomes the legal next-of-
kin. Without a spouse, the chain continues to
the oldest adult child, then the parents, then
oldest adult grandchild, and further down the
line to nieces and nephews. If the proper next
of kin should decline their duties, it is passed
on to the next person in line. The next of kin
then needs to le a request with the courts to be
named the administrator before they are granted
access to the estate. However, when there is
no legal will, the administrator of the estate is
obligated to follow legislation regarding thedivision of the estate. Your funeral director can
answer any further questions you may have.

For the past 98 years Cal-gary has hosted the Stam-pede, and for every one ofthose years, one family has
been there. The Ayoung-man family has made it a
tradition since the very rstStampede to be there show-ing and explaining theirheritage. The Ayoungmanfamily is from Siksika Re-serve and the tradition isstill strong within their fam-ily to this day.
Both my mom and mydads side have been in-
volved in it, said AngieAyoungman. Its where wehelp to promote our culture
to visitors who come to theStampede.
Her son is a dancer andsings, and the family takespart in the parade and in a
variety of different culturalevents. The family sets up their
tipi in the Indian Village,
and this year they won thirdplace out of 29 tipis in thetipi contest. Last year theyalso won third, and Angiesaid they have often been apart of the opening groupsof tipis. Everyone from An-gies sister, mother, son, grandson, nieces and neph-ews head down to Calgaryto take part in the Stam-pede, proudly promotingtheir beautiful tipi.

Rookie Blue has been on
the air for three weeks andalready the show has beendubbed the #1 scripted showon ABC in six years for thesummer slot. Its also takenrst place for the year on anynetwork on any scripted show. The instant hit is 100 per
cent Canadian, from its actorsto the directors and produc-ers. One of the Rookies, ChadDiaz, known to his friends asTravis Milne, has ties to Strath-more. His grandfather HansFlatla was a veterinarian intown for 11 years and was wellknown in the vet industry, andhis mother Patricia OConnerused to live in Strathmore atone time.
My mom was really inu-ential in my acting career. She was the rst to laugh at myjokes and really gave me theencouragement I needed togo for it. When I told her I wasgoing to theatre school shewas excited for it, said Milne.
Milne recalls being 17 andhis drama teacher Joan Me-tchooyeah telling him heshould apply to drama school, which he shrugged off.
I was like oh yeah, ok whatever, I was going to go
to the University of Albertato become a sports therapist because I was a really bigjock, every sport I could do, Iplayed, said Milne.
He went to Senior Bowl, which is like Alberta try outsfor the best Alberta footballplayers, and on the same weekend he auditioned for
theatre school in Red Deer atRed Deer College, RDC.
I went there for two years,I took the theatre diploma
course and after that I did an-other two years of lm train-ing and got my Applied De-gree of Film Acting as well atRDC, said Milne. After beingin the industry for a few years, things started to get tough andMilne started to rethink hiscareer path, especially if hewanted to eat.
I had worked for two yearsin Vancouver and toughed itout and said I had to do some-thing to make money. I wasplanning to go back to schoolto get a power engineeringcerticate and then I audi-tioned, it was the last audition
I was ever going to do beforegoing back to trade school.
He had never wanted tofall into the stereotype of theaspiring actor working as a waiter or bartender, and sohe would nd labour jobs likelandscaping and carpentry.
Theres something in work-ing with your hands that isunlike anything else, theresnothing better then being ableto step away and look at what youve accomplished, saidMilne.
He treats his acting like atradesman would treat his
work. I take it very seriouslyand I think that entertainmentis a vital part of our societyand what we need to keep usgoing. People love to laughand need to be swept away ina story. The producers of Rookie
Blue had seen Milnes workin the Canadian independent
lm Leslie, My Name Is Evil, and they liked him so muchthey sought him out. After theaudition it took nearly threeweeks of waiting before Milnefound out he had been giventhe part of Chad Diaz.
The weeks of waiting wereexcruciating but once I foundout it was like the greatestfeeling Ive ever felt. It waslike winning the lottery plusa huge weight off my shoul-ders, said Milne. While lm-ing, Milne lives in Toronto, butduring the off time, he splitshis time between Vancouver
and Los Angeles. He signeda six-year contract with ABCand if all goes well he said hemight move to Toronto.
If I could make a T-shirtof Chris Diaz it would be Mr.Manual. Hes like, Mr. by the book, said Milne. Everyoneon the show is phenomenal,so kind, so sweet. I couldnt
say who is my favourite char-acter on the show is. Hisfavourite episode is comingup in about six episodes andthough he couldnt say whatwill be happening, he did sayit has Parkour, which originat-ed in France, in it. Parkour iswhen people jump, vault andclimb over buildings and such, without the aide of harnessesor bungees.
I cant tell you anythingelse, but it has that in it andit was so much fun be on setand to watch that guy do histhing and that will be coming
in about six episodes, saidMilne. He is currently on his way
back to Toronto from Van-couver, and is stopping to seefamily along the way. The callcame in July 12 that ABC andGlobal have decided to startlming a second season afteronly three weeks on the air.

EnCana presented a cheque for$20,000 in a show of support to the re-cently renovated Standard Arena July15. Last summer the Agricultural Societybegan repairs on the arena, which costapproximately $200,000. The money forthe arena was used for renovations dueto water damage in a building attachedto the arena. The Agricultural Societyhad to relocate the player boxes to theother side of the building and had to re-place arena boards.
Part of EnCanas overall businessstrategy is a commitment to contributeto the strength and sustainability of the
communities in which we feel we are
privileged to operate in, such as Stan-dard, said Luigi Vescarelli, communityrelations advisor for EnCana. The refurbished arena has been well
used and appreciated since it reopenedin October. Like any town, village orhamlet, an arena is a place for biggersocial gatherings and community events, and being in good condition is a priority.
EnCana has been nice and donated$20,000 for the project that we did, ev-erything counts, said Perry Ellis fromStandard.
EnCana tries to nancially help anycommunity they are in, and they arelooking at possibly helping with the newCommunity Hall project.

Continued from page 1County council let residents know
they have been on top of the issue sincethey rst learned about it. The proposedrealignment will see the highway mov-ing four miles south of Strathmore, pos-sibly negetively affecting the economy.Further east the realignment will cutthrough farmland, fracturing it.
We have a corridor and people areused to it and if they have to expandit, why not do it there, said Reeve Ben
Armstrong. Or if they have to, theycould go over top.
Yeah we could divide the town in
half, make it free ow through townwith a couple overpasses over it. Thenthere would be two service roads, withan overpass at each end, and then no-body would have to come in to townanyway, said Ouellette.
Debbie Shelley, Chief Executive Of-cer for the Global Training Centre, GTC,
just found out about the proposal a fewdays ago. She was upset no one had in-formed her company and was lookingto council for answers.
This current proposal runs through
our property, and it will wipe our busi-ness off the map, said Shelley. TheGTC was just recently approved for anexpansion with no notication of therealignment/bypass. Shelley was upsetabout the possibility of the companyexpanding, only to go out of businessin 10 to 15 years, and was looking for aconrmation of support from the coun-ty.
Trying to plan out for 100 years is just not possible. Its a necessity thatwe do this as a combined effort, saidCouncillor Ken Sauve. Lust hopes to beat Heritage Days handing out petitions
and said he will be sending out 500 ev-ery two weeks until the entire countyand town has received them.
I think bypasses always raised con-cerns, but most of the places after thebypass is built, have said sometimesit even does better for the businesses.
Also on any of our bypasses we plan way, way ahead, so were still prob-ably a good 20 years out on the bypassthere, said Ouellette. Were not here totry to disrupt anybody, were here to tryto make life better for everyone.

The blooddonor clinic was at the Civic Centre on July 20, and people were already signing up for the nextone in September. Strathmore is a very busy clinic. Our goal is to take 190 units home and wellprobably do that today, said Sandra Violini, charge nurse for the clinic. People can only donateevery 56 days, and its about a half pint for each donation. Should I tell my groomer if my dogscut is not what I was looking for?
Absolutely! The worse thing you can do is not say anything and be
unhappy. It is the same type of relationship that one has with their ownhair stylist. Groomers arent always able to see things as their
customers do. For example, short to your groomer may not be the
same as short to you. If it is the rst groom, it can sometimes
take 2-3 sessions to get the style just right.
If you know how you like your dog styled, be as specic as possible with

To the EditorIn regards to the recent fowers on the canal bank
debate, all I can say is. You have got to be kiddingme?? For anyone to disregard 10 years o volunteer-ism is beyond my comprehension. Ten years o hard
work and dedication on Nancy and Terrys part tohave the powers that be to tell them to uproot allplant lie and destroy any remaining eects, o saidhard work is idiotic. So what i it is on W.I.D. land, sowhat! Why cant it be beautiul? Shame on whatevercommittee decided on this ridiculous outcome o 10
years o hard work. Funny thing though, Nancy &Terry i you were caught deacing this said piece oland instead o beautiying it, your punishment prob-ably would have been community service, weedingand making this piece o land beautiul, go gure.
You have my personal thanks or 10 years o volun-teer work. May the W.I. D. Committees weeds, growtall and beautiul.

Parliamentary Report
Last week at the conclusion othe annual meeting o AgricultureMinisters, ederal Agriculture Min-
ister Gerry Ritz and Ministers romSaskatchewan, Manitoba and Alber-ta together announced vital helpor hard-hit Prairie armers andproducers aected by recent food-ing. Aected producers will share$450 million in extra payments un-der the ederal Agri-Recovery pro-gram. The assistance package willamount to $30 per acre and will becost-shared by the Prairie Provinc-es and Ottawa.
Heavy rains have drenched partso the Prairies over the past month, ruining crops and making eldstoo wet to seed. Minister Ritz saysits the astest relie package under
the Agri-Recovery program evermade. Alberta is set to receive $60million through the $450-millionprogram. This assistance will helparmers take immediate measuresto protect, rehabilitate and man-age aected cropland. Buildingon existing Agri programs, whichis the rst line o deense or Ca-nadian armers, this additional ac-tion means aster help or hard-hit
Western armers who need to deal
with the realities today, while stillplanning or a successul plantingseason next year. The ability o our Conservative
government to react so switly tothe fooding crisis is all about poli-tics, in my mind. While in Opposi-
tion, I joined my colleagues in theHouse o Commons calling on theLiberal government to separate di-saster relie rom the income stabi-lization programs being oered toarmers by the ederal government.
The Liberals never listened. Manyo you will remember the pictureso ormer Prime Minister Jean Chre-tien visiting fooded areas in Mani-toba and personally lling sand-bags. This photo-op played big ontelevision media and tried to dupecity olk into thinking Chretien washelping armers.
In 2005-2006, we campaigned ona political platorm to re-invent the
suite o programs Agriculture Can-ada has or armers. We did that im-mediately ollowing our election togovern, with input rom agriculturestakeholders. These programs wereup and running shortly thereaterand were available to armers dur-ing the current food crisis.
Most recently in China, buildingon his continued interventions atmultiple government levels, Minis-ter Ritz secured an agreement dou-
bling Canadas wheat sales to Chinaover recent years - 500,000 metrictonnes by the end o 2011- worth$130 million. A ew days beore the wheat
sales announcement, Minister Ritzdeclared that the trade barriers are
coming down or Canadian beein China. The breakthrough agree-ment between Canada and Chinaallowing market access or Cana-dian bee in a staged process willsoon see consumers across China- the worlds number one consum-er o agriculture products with agrowing population o 1.3 billion- enjoying sae, high quality Cana-dian bee.
During the past ew years, PrimeMinister Harper has dispatched ourConservative governments Agri-culture Minister to travel the worldselling Canadas agriculture prod-ucts and securing trade deals. Min-
ister Ritz is making sales in Mexico,Cuba, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong,China, South Korea, India, Moroc-co, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Peru,Colombia and the European Union.

Celebrations took place inLangdon over this past week-end as they celebrated theirannual Langdon Days. It start-ed after World War II, and it be-gan with a ball game. LangdonDays have spread to includefun for the whole family, withthree days of activities. Every-thing from a pancake breakfastto dances on Friday and Satur-day took place. This year the Langdon
School Playground Committeeprovided the breakfast while
raising money for the newplayground.
Festivities went from Fri-day until Sunday. The turnoutgrows every year as new resi-dents move into the hamlet.
Miss Bette brought Lil Tootout at noon on Saturday July17, and gave all the kids a ridefor .50 cents. There was alsoa silent auction, rock climb-ing, and sumo suit wrestlingto help keep kids of all agesentertained. All kinds of boun-cy houses were set up by lo-cal business Fun Time PartyBouncers; on Saturday, for $5kids had unlimited use of thebouncy houses. Skaters of Cal-gary came to Langdon Daysand put on a skateboard com-petition for the older kids.
Local bands, Abstract Asylumand End Silence, performed
Friday. The bands played rock, and kept patrons entertainedas they showcased their talenton Friday July 16. Saturday wasthe parade, which keeps grow-ing every year and is always
lled with people around thecommunity wanting to be apart of the celebrations.
Everyone has water guns, said Cheryl Wislon, presidentof the Langdon Community Association. People love it,they are soaked by the end. Inprevious years there has beena Lego display unfortunately, due to recently opening a newlocation in Chinook, the Legodisplay was missing but will beback next year.
Rain and even a bit of hailwhich blew through the hamletdidnt stop people from havingfun and still playing ball.
Langdon Days takes placethe third week of July every year, and despite the CalgaryStampede being on at the sametime this year, the turnout wasgreat.

Mothers Day may have passed but two little boys want to do something nice for their moms. Friends Brenden, 12, and
Jared, 8, decided to set up a lemonade stand outside their homes on Maplewood Drive.
We were bored so we decided to be nice to our moms, said the two boys. They are selling the lemonade for .25 cents
a glass, and they plan to be out often throughout the summer. Shannon LeClair Photo

Charles Lage (l) and his son passed
through Strathmore July 7-8 to raise
money for his charity, A Joyful Noise
School of Music.
Mario Prusina Photo
Shannon LeCLair
Times Reporter
One man has such a strong belief in music creating mira-cles that he has been doing a bike tour to raise awareness tohis cause. His name is Charles Lage, he currently lives in Win-nipeg and at 53 he has been a piano technician for 34 years.
Lage is an autism survivor and is cycling across Canada toraise money for his charity, A Joyful Noise School of Music.I have found personally and scientically that music cre-
ates miracles in the lives of the challenged, said Lage. Overthe last number of years, I have given away hundreds of pia-nos and in order to continue this, giving and offering musicfor therapeutic purposes, is in scattered places and wed liketo bring this under one roof.
Lages main objective is to create a national centre in centralCanada where the best course of action can be determined asto how to help people with disabilities. He would also liketo have a neurological researcher and teachers qualied insocial and cognitive skills, reading and comprehension andusing music as therapy and a type of catalyst for learning.Lage would like to have the centre in Winnipeg so everyone
would have the same distance to go.He also said everyone interested would go to the centre for
a non-medical assessment to see what method to take with
each individual.I teach challenged people to do piano restorative work
but wed also like to nd employment for Autistics and otherchallenged individuals, said Lage. He has a three-part goal
he wants to accomplish to try to bring his dream to life. Therst part is to raise awareness to the issues the challengedface. He would like to raise funds online for the Institutionof the National Centre for Music and Classroom Therapy to
be able to focus on the micro level of therapy.I also plan to speak to our politicians about passing the
Arts Tax Credit sooner rather than later, so that millions of
challenged children and adults can have relief from the highcost of therapy. Not to mention those that passed over musictherapy or music for therapeutic purposes (music lessons)
because of cost, said Lage.He would like to see costs under $1,000, so everyone will
be able to afford to learn and grow through music. On July19 Lage had a rare meeting on Parliament Hill discussing thetax credit and he won. The tax credit will be put into placesooner for the kids and it is still in discussion for adults.According to Lage, other groups focus on the macro level,
but it is the micro skills which accelerate at a marvelous ratewhen in conjunction with the macro therapy in maintenanceof Autism, heart attacks, or strokes. But we cant do any ofthis without help completing the forms necessary to gaingovernment grants and who knows the ins and outs of grant-ing so the poor can afford therapy, said Lage. Why is he do-ing this? Because, he said in the past 10 years there has beenscientic proof about the power of music in life and success.
His challenge to fellow Canadians is, are you up to helpingthose who cant help themselves?

Have you ever wondered why your tan fades? As your
skin cells regenerate and shed, the tan disappears
with the dead cells. While fading is inevitable unless
you keep up tanning maintenance, there are things
you can do to keep your brown around longer. Dont
use harsh soaps that dry the skin, as the skin cells will
die away faster. Shower gels are more moisturizing
and keep skin better hydrated. Keep your skin fresh
by exfoliating before you tan and use a good quality
lotion before and after tanning to keep your tanned
cells from shedding away.

Giddy upThis year the Riqueza riding academy was the host of the 2010 BRAVE show circuit.
The circuit took place from July 17 to 18, and the academy saw many riders from a
variety of barns come to participate. Ribbons were awarded to the top ve in each
category, and for the lead lines, younger riders lead by their parents/instructor, ev-
eryone was given a prize. Some of the older more experienced riders jumped posts,
up-to two-feet-six-inches high. The academy will be hosting another BRAVE show
on September 11. Shannon LeClair Photo

It maybe the most overused phrase inall of sports, but peaking at the right time was indeed the case for the StrathmoreVenom.
After posting an 8-5-1 record and nish-ing in fourth place in the league stand-ings, the local Tier III Junior B team wasunstoppable in the post-season.
Despite being underdogs in each oftheir best-of-three playoffs rounds, the Venom defeated the top two teams inthe South Division before defeating theGrande Prairie Thrashers in the ProvincialChampionship.
We were nervous, but we knew wecould beat them, said coach Jody Stolz of
the nal. We played the rst place teamin the south and beat them in two (games)and the second place team, we beat themin three (games), so we knew we could doit we just had to go in with the right, positive attitude and play lacrosse. After defeating the top-ranked Innisfail
Yetti and the Medicine Hat Sun Devilsin the South Championship, the Venommade the 10-hour bus ride into hostileterritory.
They did everything possible to get us(off) of our game, said the coach. Weplayed great lacrosse in the rst game,I dont want to say it any better (but) weschooled them we schooled them in thegame of lacrosse.
In the second game, they tried every-
thing and they were winning after thesecond period but we calmed down andrelaxed and beat them in the third period.According to Stolz, the Venom can make
life frustrating for opponents. Were a hard team to play, he said.
Were fast, were physical, were aggres-sive on the ball and you have to be readyto play our transition.
During the regular season, the Venomsrough and tough style of play resulted inthem accumulating 541 penalty minutes the most in the entire league.
Prior to the playoffs, Stolz send a mes-sage to his players that was well received.
The biggest thing we had to realizewas that for us not to lose in the playoffs,we had to stay out of the penalty box,
said Stolz. Absolutely, the biggest thingwas our discipline and the kids believedme when I told them. They (listened) andthey were rewarded for it.
Hard work, determination and goingin with the right attitude (was the key) tosuccess.According to Stolz, this is the rst pro-
vincial title since Strathmore became ahub for kids to play lacrosse. He antici-pates that younger kids will aspire to play junior lacrosse and help build the pro-gram from the grassroots level.
He was also quick to praise the sup-port of the parents and local businessesfor generating the funds necessary to takethe kids to Grande Prairie.
