Dearest Parishioners,

Peace in the Lord Jesus. Tragically as I greet you with peace in each letter, I must write about a tragedy – the murder of nine-year-old Jennifer “Chikis” Trifo. Too many murders have occurred in our parish since I arrived in 2016 – most in Bridgeton and two in other parts of the parish. The murder of an innocent child gets much attention and strikes us more deeply in the heart; nonetheless, each homicide is a sad tragedy. As Deacon Arnaldo and I visited the Trifo family and prayed with them, we felt shock, anger, and a sense of helplessness. We walked the neighborhood and talked with some neighbors and we felt the grinding poverty of the area. Murder is the ultimate tragedy; yet, poverty – both in cities like Bridgeton and in the rural areas of our parish – is also a tragedy and a constant grind that wear people down. Also, the scourge of drugs (both in Bridgeton and in all our municipalities), gangs, domestic violence, apathy, discrimination, selfishness and greed tear at us too. All this weighs on me, on our parishioners and on all people of goodwill. As Deacon Arnaldo and I felt shock and anger, we continued to pray with the Trifo family. We prayed with their relatives and friends. We continued to pray – in solidarity. We must pray. We must stand united. We must speak up. We must act. We cannot stop! I have by my side the “Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi,” beautifully done in calligraphy by a parishioner; it begins with: “Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace….” I thank all parishioners and people of goodwill who live this prayer. I thank them for raising their voices, for their activism, charity, compassion, and work for justice. I thank them for getting involved in our parish and for making our world a better world in some small way. We cannot change the past; but, perhaps, we can change the future. Eternal rest, O Lord, grant unto Jennifer and unto all other victims of violence and injustice. May they rest in peace. Amen.

Stewardship: Sharing of time, talent or treasure

for the common good & the glory of God

“…come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest awhile.” - Mark 6:31

Do you live Stewardship spending time, every day, alone and in silence listening to how God is calling you? If not, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to develop a more personal relationship with Him. Unless we talk and more importantly, listen to God every day, how else will we know how He is calling us? Consider making a retreat this year, spend some “alone” time with God.

POPE FRANCIS FOOD PANTRY The Pope Francis Food Pantry is open the third Saturday of each month from 9 AM to 11 AM. We are in need of peanut butter and jelly, hormel compleats, canned meals, pasta sauce, pasta and deodorant. Thank you for your support.

In today’s gospel “the apostles gathered around and told Jesus all they had done.” Listening allows the other person to express, understand and appreciate their experiences. Whether it is the excited chatter of young child or the repetitious stories of an aging grandparent, listening is important. It is not just time well spent, it is sacred time.

LA ESQUINA DEL PASTOR

Estimados Feligreses,

¡No podemos parar!

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
