Dan’s Silverleaf has beengenerous for tributes. It’s lent its stage to
bands who pay homage to theBeatles, the Rolling Stones,Bruce Springsteen, JurassicPark and the like.
The local bar and venue con-tinues that tradition today withChris Holt, an alumnus ofSorta and the Slack, and ChadStockslager, of the Drams and
King Bucks. The two men haveearned attention in NorthTexas for their tribute to Simon& Garfunkel.
The duo has taken this set tovenues all around North Texas, interpreting songs like “BridgeOver Troubled Water,” “TheSound of Silence” and “SlipSliding Away.”
Stockslager and Holt formedthe tribute act almost a yearago. Though initially competi-tive, the two musicians hadadmired and respected oneanother for years, and were
nominees for prestigiousregional music awards. Finally, they bumped into one anotherin a bar, tried on some friendlybanter and eventually joinedforces.
Neither musician wouldhave guessed the other sharedhis passion for the music ofPaul Simon. But the man whomade Graceland brought thetwo together.
The show starts at 9 p.m.today at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103Industrial St. Cover is $7.

WEDNESDAY10 to 10:45 a.m. — Spanish Story
By Rachel WattsFor the Denton Record-Chronicle
Weathering several stormsbrought on by recording sna-fus, as well as dodging an actu-al wildfire, Austin’s eight-pieceprogressive folk-pop group theEastern Sea is finally releasingPlague, an album that has beenin the works since 2010.
The group is currently tour-ing through a small section ofTexas and the East Coast, whichincludes a stop in Denton at
Dan’s Silverleaf on Saturday. Although they have several
hundred miles ahead of them,an even longer journey was get-ting the album to this point, says guitarist Matthew Hines, afounding member of the group.
What started in 2005 as athree-piece project for Hinesand his friends has morphedinto an eight-member Austin-based force that endured sever-al setbacks on the road to
releasing its new album. With a handful of polished
songs and eager to get the ballrolling, the group went to HotTracks recording studio inAustin in early 2011, but wereblindsided during the record-ing process when the entirestudio’s complex was con-demned by the city for buildingcode violations.
“We were stranded, with nostudio and 12 songs worth ofcore tracking on tape,” Hinessaid.
Plague was dead in the waterfor several months while theband scrambled to find a newlocation with a similar tapemachine that could incorporate
all of the overdubs and vocals.Seeking refuge at a differentstudio, Ohm Recording, theband got back to work, but waseventually forced out becauseof differences between thesound engineers, Hines said.
“With the band and album’sfutures in question, we were hitwith another setback,” he said.
When wildfires struck partsof Texas last September, thou-sands of frantic homeownersanxiously waited to be spared. One such home was that of theband’s producer, Hines said. Itwas a close call.
“Since the fire missed thehouse, we decided to finishmixing there,” he said, “and
completed everything almost ayear after we began.”
Hines said the group wantedto make an album from theground up that would soundlike a live band, in order to cap-ture the excitement of theEastern Sea’s shows. He feelsthey’ve finally done that withPlague, and for many reasons,it is different from anythingelse he has done before.
“The finished product repre-sents a really long struggle forme personally,” Hines said, “butI am immensely proud of theend result, due to both theambition of the project and thechallenges we had to overcometo make it all work.”

COVER STORY
Summer means big business at the box office, with a glut of rom-coms, family flicks andsuperheroes saving the day. But which ones should you make a point to see? Never fear— we have your compass to the summer’s cinematic offerings.
BraveRated PG, 93 minutes.
Opens Friday.
Disney and Pixar teamed up tocreate the Little Princess WhoWouldn’t — wouldn’t consider mar-riage her destiny, that is.
Meet Princess Merida, an expertarcher known for her defiance andher explosion of screaming red curls.Neither pleases her father, KingFergus (voiced by the incomparableBilly Connolly), or her mum, Queen
Elinor (Emma Thompson). While the queen is looking to
land a good young man for herdaughter (voiced by the chameleonKelly Macdonald, who affected aspot-on Texas drawl in No Countryfor Old Men), Merida is looking fora spell that will change her destiny. But destiny is again a fickle thing, and Merida messes with the Orderof Things. The princess has to relyon her pluck and her archery tomake things right.
Audiences should expect dazzling
color, gorgeous music and the well-paced comic relief that Pixar mintedwith its Toy Story series.
Buzz says that adults will loveBrave as much as children will —and parents might find themselveshaving to improvise a safer versionof Merida’s bow and arrow.
The movie is also being releasedin 3D.
Good for: All the girls whoalready miss Katniss and her bowand arrow. And for anyone who israising a spunky lass of their own.
By Lucinda Breeding | Features Editor
TOP: Merida, voiced by Kelly Macdonald, is a princess who has everything but marriage on her mind
in Brave. She causes big trouble when she seeks out a spell that will change her fate.
Disney/Pixar
The Amazing Spider-ManRated PG-13, 90 minutes.
Opens July 3.
Peter Parker — wearer of total-body Spandex and bearer of web-swinging, kid-saving noble inten-tions — doesn’t know much abouthis parents. Then he finds a brief-case.
That case contains secrets andclues that set the spunky Parker onthe trail of his parents — or at leastthe answers about their disappear-ance.
Peter also grapples with the trialsof romance. His first high schoolcrush, Gwen Stacy, seems receptiveto Peter’s affections — but Peter’ssecret identity piques the doggedinterest of Gwen’s law enforcementpop, George. And can Gwen stick byher hero when Peter’s sleuthingleads to Oscorp and Dr. CurtConnors — the former partner ofPeter’s father?
Marc Webb directs this feast forthe eyes. Buildings collapse, abridge and all the cars on it areswept up in a fire, and Spider-Manbobs and weaves his way throughthe metropolis on the sticky filigreesof his magic webs.
The standing cast of maturingstars — Toby Maguire and KirstenDunst — have graduated from thefranchise, leaving the damsel-loves-detective superhero act to AndrewGarfield as Spidey and “it” girlEmma Stone as the platinum blondGwen.
Campbell Scott and EmbethDavidtz play Peter’s parents, withMartin Sheen and Sally Fields play-ing the elder Parkers, Peter’sguardians.
A fresh-faced cast and dynamiceffects should deliver a solid sum-mer movie.
Good for: Anyone who wonders“who am I, and where did I comefrom,” and fans of Emma Stone.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Rated R, 120 minutes. Opens Friday.
Vampires have seducedhuman imagination for cen-turies, and this summer, FoxSearchlight wants you to sus-pend your disbelief once againfor Abraham Lincoln: VampireHunter.
Oh, what? You think it’s silly to weave a
tale of undeath through thediaries of one of the country’smost beloved presidents? Goodfor you. Tim Burton (EdwardScissorhands, Planet of theApes) thought novelist SethGrahame-Smith’s book waslively and fun enough to put hiscash behind the hotly hypedsummer action-thriller.
In a nutshell: Abe Lincolnwatches a vampire dispatch hismother as a child. He commitsto ridding the New World(that’s America, in the 1800s)of the fanged vermin who arefighting for control of the
colonies. Much butt-kicking,biting and blood spatteringensues. Grahame-Smithearned critical and popularpraise when he took JaneAusten’s beloved novel, Prideand Prejudice, and injectedzombies into the action. Thenovel about Abe being anAmerican Van Helsing gotplenty of thumbs up, too.
In the film, Benjamin Walker(Kinsey) plays the put-uponpresident who has to sling anax against vampires while try-ing to preserve the Union.Mary Elizabeth Winstead(Deathproof, Scott Pilgrim vs.the World) is Mary Todd, andRufus Sewell finally lands a rolethat can fully employ his creepfactor.
Good for: Women who wantto reward boyfriends and hus-bands for being patientthrough the whole Twilightthing, or anyone who wonderswhat Abe might have lookedlike before he grew the mus-tache-less beard and proved hisrhetorical chops.
The Dark Knight RisesRated PG-13, 162 minutes.
Opens July 20.
Fanboys have already ventedand cheered ad nauseum allover Facebook about the trailerof the upcoming installment ofthe Batman franchise.
The Dark Knight Rises isshaping up to be the most antic-ipated movies of the summer.
Let’s see. Christian Balespeaking in an affected, car-toon rasp? Check. Sensualsuperheroine slinking onto tothe scene? Check. Gotham tee-tering on the brink of moral
and civil collapse? Check. Director Christopher Nolan
packs this long venture (atalmost three hours) with lots ofinky dark shadows, explosions, areally, really bad guy, and thepaternal presence of butlerAlfred (Michael Caine), scientistLucius Fox (Morgan Freeman)and Jim Gordon (Gary Old-man), the police commissioner.
Bruce Wayne (Bale) isabducted by the imposing psy-chopath Bane (Tom Hardy), asavage wearing spooky head-gear that deepens his voice andexaggerates his breathing.Wayne took the fall for the
crimes of Two Face and hasfallen from the grace ofGotham. Beat cop John Blake(Joseph Gordon-Levitt), asecret servant to Batman, pinesfor the Dark Knight to returnand restore order to GothamCity. Add bored socialite SelinaKyle (Anne Hathaway) — a.k.a.Catwoman — into this mix andWayne has his work cut out forhim. His goal is to save Gothamagain — and clear his name.
Good for: Anyone who has athing for futuristic vehicles, air-craft and combat weapons, butwho still respects ancientEastern fighting philosophies.

rious Hungarian translator (Kristin
Scott Thomas). Meanwhile, a bunch
of bad-guy Arabs are out to get him.
Any suspense or interest devolves
with a pointless diversion into super-
natural silliness. Rated R, 85 minutes.

NOW PLAYINGThe Avengers () Superheroes
from Marvel Comics unite to face an
otherworldly foe (Tom Hiddleston) in
this assembling of franchise war-
riors: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.),
Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Hulk
(Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy
Renner), Captain America (Chris
Evans) and the Black Widow (Scar-
lett Johansson). Joss Whedon wrote
and directed, delivering a satisfying,
if exhausting, rendition of good ver-
sus evil. Rated PG-13, 142 minutes. —

Madagascar 3: Europe’s MostWanted () Halfway into the third
animated tale about New York City
zoo animals on their overseas adven-
tures, Alex the lion (voiced by Ben
Stiller) tells some new circus friends
that their act was not too entertain-
ing “because you were just going
through the motions out there.” So,
too, for Madagascar 3. The result: A
cute story about zoo animals running
off to join the circus becomes over-
whelmed by a blur of color and ani-
mated acrobatics. Rated PG, 92 min-

Prometheus () Director
Ridley Scott delivers a suspenseful
prequel to his 1979 classic Alien. The
similar plot sees a spaceship ventur-

while also adding several jolts of ter-
ror. With Noomi Rapace, Charlize
Theron and Michael Fassbender.

Penny (Keira Knightley) and Dodge (Steve Carell) hit the road to find a former flame of Dodge’s in Seeking a Friend for the
End of the World.
By Boo AllenFilm Critic
The world will end in threeweeks, and no one knows quitehow to play it in Seeking aFriend for the End of the World.
This film marks the directingdebut of writer and actorLorene Scafaria. Now in con-trol for the first time, she wob-bles, neither settling on a con-sistent narrative, nor into adefined mood.
But hey, when a giant aster-oid is scheduled to hit Earth inthree weeks, who’s looking for
consistency?What Scafaria does accom-
plish, however, is accentuatingthe folly of many of the thingswe seem to prize. Conversely, she also paints a convincing por-trait of what would actuallymatter most to anyone facedwith a certain imminent ending.
Steve Carell, doing his bestBuster Keaton stoneface imita-tion, sleepwalks his way throughhis role as Dodge, a sad-sackinsurance salesman whose wifehas left him just about the timeit becomes official that the nastyasteroid will hit.
Meanwhile, the rest ofhumanity has begun to act inmuch the same way Freudhypothesized everyone wouldact without religion. That is,with abandon — indulging insex, drugs and excessive vio-lence. In these early stages, comedians Rob Corddry andPatton Oswalt show up, actingoutrageous and suggesting thatall will be played for comedy.
But in the turmoil, Dodgeand neighbor Penny (Keira
Knightley) meet cute, andbefore long, they have taken offfor a requisite end-of-worldroad trip (with the requisitecute dog), so Dodge can find anold girlfriend. Along the way, they meet a survivalist (DerekLuke), a colorful old geezerwith terminal cancer (WilliamPetersen) and various otheroutcasts.
Even though the 49-year-oldCarell and the 27-year-oldKnightley look grossly mis-matched, Scafaria leads hertwo main characters into theinevitable if awkward coupling— suggesting that when facedwith impending annihilation, some people would obviouslyface it with a friend, howeverseemingly unsuitable.
Seeking aFriend for theEnd of theWorld
Rated R, 101 minutes.Opens Friday.
‘End of the World’results in requisiteroad trip, romance
and ballads, the all-star cast is game,
but the filmmakers can’t stop wink-
ing and mocking the mockable music
and the era long enough to let the
picture pay off. Burnt-out rocker
Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) staggers
onstage for his farewell show at the
Sunset Strip’s famed “Bourbon
Room.” Meanwhile, Sherrie, a wait-
ress and would-be singer (Julianne
Hough), and bartender-guitarist Drew
(Boneta) dream of living the rock-god
life. Rated PG-13, 123 minutes. —

Snow White & the Huntsman(1/2) Director Rupert Sanders’
revisionist take on the classic
Brothers Grimm fable upends expec-
tations of traditional gender roles
while simultaneously embracing what
a fairy tale should be. It’s dark and
dangerous, vicious and violent. And
yet the performances — notably from
Kristen Stewart as the title character
— don’t always live up to the film's
visionary promise. With Charlize
Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Rated
