Welcome to the 33rd Filberg Festival. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Filberg Heritage Lodge & Park Association thank you for coming out and supporting this unique outdoor arts event.

The Festival continues to be our principal source of funding, providing the revenue required to operate the association and to continue the restoration to the Lodge and outbuildings. More than 130 artisans are presenting their arts and crafts for sale. Thank you to our

community, our sponsors, the more than 300 volunteers and our staff who make the Festival happen. The park, the gardens, the Lodge nestled below the Beaufort Mountains on Comox Harbour create the perfect east coast Vancouver Island setting for this celebration of the arts.

We cater to everyone at the Filberg Festival, including the little ones! The Filberg Festivals childrens program located in the Enchanted Forest led by Dana Wilson and her team of volunteers offer fun educational activities such as: storytelling, face painting, sand boxes, painting, crafts and games. Childrens performances over the BC Day long weekend include Juno Award Winner Norman Foote and 9 year old Stella Swanson who was nominated for WCMAs Childrens Album of the Year. Please check the entertainment schedule for performance days and times. And whats an Enchanted Forest without a fairy? Tatiana, Queen of the Flower Fairies will be visiting July 31 and August 1

Gordon Hutchens studio is nestled in 19 wooded acres in the secluded north end of Denman Island, British Co-lumbia, a 5 minute drive from the ferry landing. For nearly 30 years Gordon has operated his extensive studio here while exhibit-ing across Canada, from Halifax, Mon-treal and Toronto to Vancouver & Vic-toria. He has had over 25 one-man shows and over 70 group exhibitions across Canada and the U.S., with 3 major exhibitions in Japan.

Gordon has also taught courses and workshops for many colleges and potters guilds. His works and articles have been pub-lished in various ceramics magazines and books. He is the author/host of 4 videos: Beginning Raku, Variations on Raku and two videos on Salt and Soda Firing. Gordon received

an honours degree in Fine Arts from the University of Illinois majoring in Ceramics (Clay and Glass Blowing). Th ree semesters of

glaze & clay chem-

istry combined with working through school as the ce-ramics laboratory assistant gives him an unusually strong technical back-ground. Gordons work is

well known for the depth and diversity of his glazes and the strength and refi ne-ment of his forms. Gordon formulates

and blends all his own clay bodies us-ing many diff erent clays from across North America, and bases his porcelain body on a high quality kaolin from England. Local materials are also

utilized. Clay from his own

property is high in iron and is used in earthenware bod-ies and in oil spot glazes and metal-lic luster glazes. Seaweed from the beach is used in salt/sagger fi rings. Local wood ash is another major glaze ingredient. Gordon Hutchens

produces a variety of work from sculp-tured to function-al, and utilizes an extremely broad range of techniques. Works in his show-room include: Raku, Salt Glaze Stoneware, Crys-
