APS Welcomes Superintendent Dr. Francisco Durán
• Dr. Durán joins APS from Fairfax County Public Schools where he has served since 2015 as a Chief Academic Officer and Chief Equity Officer.
• Since 2018, Dr. Durán has served in the Virginia State Board of Education
• Dr. Durán was Superintendent of Trenton Public Schools in New Jersey, where he was unanimously appointed for a second five-year term
• He is a bilingual educator who began his career as a special education assistant in Albuquerque Public Schools, and he also served for five years as a middle school language arts and social studies teacher in Albuquerque and California.

Engage with Superintendent Dr. Francisco Durán
• The Let’s Talk Event Series will continue through the summer with additional events specifically for students to provide them with the opportunity to talk about current events in a format that will empower them to identify problems and create solutions in advocating for change.
• During the month of June, Dr. Durán hosted about six virtual town halls for community members, staff and students aimed at learning more about him and for asking questions. 71
• June 2 School Board and Superintendent message: we acknowledge the anger and hurt that our APS community and the nation are experiencing, especially our African American community.
• We want you to know that we support you, we believe in you, and we stand in solidarity with you.
• APS hosted a virtual event called “Let’s Talk: A Community Discussion on Racism” intended to begin community discussions on racism, equity, social justice and how they all intersect within educational systems.

Return to School State Guidance from VDOE
• Governor Northam issued guidance for phased reopening of Virginia schools on June 9
• Provides opportunities for in-person instruction in each phase, aligned with Forward Virginia blueprint for easing health restrictions:
• Phase I: Special education programs and childcare for working families
• Phase II (Now): Phase I plus preschool through third grade students, English learners, and summer camps in school buildings
• Phase III: All students may receive in-person instruction as can be accommodated with strict physical distancing measures in place, requiring alternative schedules blending in-person and remote learning for students
• Beyond Phase III: divisions will resume “new-normal” operations under future guidance

•A third model allowing all students to attend two days of in-person instruction each week, on alternating days.
