Editorial Another kind of Pentecost Last month I wrote about a New Pentecost happening in ourtimeswithPopeFrancis’documentonCreationaswellas new science uncovering for us and making known the wondersofGod’sabundantoutpouringeveniftheyarenotaware that that is what they are doing. I felt another Pentecost, an outpouring into and from the hearts of New Zealanders, as I watched and took part in the five programmesWhatNextNew Zealand. Exploringthe immense changes that are happening and are going to happen with the explosion of knowledge and technology. It could be frightening and leaving us wondering what might happen to each of us, but somehow it didn’t. It leftmewith the hope and joy similar that which must have been experiencedthatfirstPentecost. The most amazing experience was that this was Catholic SocialJusticeinaction.Iwasasastonishedastheonlookersat the healings of Jesus were two centuries ago. about together. Questions of: Education for a changingworld, not in the future but right now. Many of the jobs we take for granted will disappear. Not just manual jobs but professional jobs, accountants and lawyers for example. The concern expressed that people of every walk of life from newborn to elderly not be left behindwas encouraging.Along with this disquiet that there would be a larger gap between rich and poor and that this must not happen. It wassaidthat‘poverty’shouldbeconfinedtoTePapaandbecome a museum piece. Editorial Creation Story

In 2006 I had an exhibition at the Forrester Galleryentitled ‘Pilgrimage’, the painting came from a pilgrimageI made to the spiritual places of the land in the South Island. A retreat at Karitane was a beginning as walking around the Peninsula I saw the red earth, which I wouldsubsequently make into paint. I learnt about its spiritual nature to the Maori as this earth is considered the blood of Papatuanuka ‘the EarthMother’. It runs through the wholeof the country and you can see it in cuttings on roadsideseverywhere. When mixed with shark oil this became thepaint used on the carving of the Wharenui and the gatesof the Marae. It had protective qualities. Maori consideredthis protection was not only for the wood but also for thespirit, endowing it with a sacred element. It really does havestrong protection as early European settlers also foundmaking it into NZ Haematite Paint. The NZ Railways used iton all the red sheds around the country and because of its 80% iron oxide content was not only a preservative but fireresistant as well. That is the scientific explanation.Thewriter of theCreation Story of Adammust have known

about this too, and maybe the clay used to form the firstbeing was this very red earth. In the Hebrew of the story‘dam’ is the word used for ‘blood’ and ‘adamah’ the wordused for ‘the earth’. Blood is the life force coursing throughthe whole of the productive ground, which we cultivatefor our survival. The word ‘Adam’ has something similarit is not a personal name, as we often think, but a wordfor ‘earth creature’ created from the clay the ‘adamah’.The living creature with life force flowing through, of thiswe are reminded every Ash Wednesday. This is our deepconnectedness to the very planet on which we live and onwhich we depend for survival. Myths are created out of such understanding of the Mystery of who we are and where we come from. A myth is a form of truth, which cannot be explained scientifically, but has a deeper meaning, which as humans we try to comprehend but not often really understand, but knowwith another knowing. All cultures have myths; all havetried to explain mystery. We cannot dismiss them as fairy tales understand that there are other forms of truth besides the scientific. As with the red clay science sometimes backsup our hunches. The new ‘creation story’ that is now thestory of us all, is doing something similar. It says something about all our ‘creation stories’, and there are many, andadds something to them.

EPICUREAN ADVENTURES

This leaves us with a task. To study and relook at the firstchapters of the Book of Genesiswhere the ‘creation stories’,and there are two, are found. Begin to ask questions aboutwhat we have taken for granted, because what we take forgranted without questioning often holds us bound. Also totreasure the other ways we find and express truth, poetry, song, music, dance, drama, and make sure they are passed on to future generations. They are deeply part of who weare as people and, for us, as who we are as Christians.Sr Mary Horn

A Part of My Journey

Pat,Irememberyoursoftlyspokenvoicegreetingmostofthestaffmembers when Margaret wasn’t around. I have a very fond memory of yourabilitytosharetimewithmanyschool pupils at Hanmersley Park. I will always remember you quietly becoming aware of me as I slowly

crossed the school path onmy own. It was as if a softpinkrosebegantobloominourfriendshipthatcontinuedthrough the later years of my school journey. This special journey was linked to several friendships with supportive teacherswhocrossedmyschoolpathoflearning. These teachers were happy to be a part of my learning journey where they were able to push open a few doors to share my world of strong dreams. As the school secretary your smile really shone for me while I was being assessed. It was like a cloud of happy thoughts descending to assist me during my time atHamnersley Park. Angela Griffin
