Golf News from Mike Guy - Head Golf Professional

Shots of the Month: *We start out this month with three one putt eagles on hole #10. Joe McIntosh starts us off with a well struck 3 hybrid which landed 12 feet from the hole. He finished off the eagle by holing the putt. The hole was witnessed by Tom Christensen & Al Logan. This was followed by Hap Pruitt’s 2 hybrid that finished near the hole to set up eagle. Terry Westermann, Buck Novak, & Ray Dowling cheered on their team mate while playing with the Eagles men’s group. Libby Kronenwetter finishes off the eagle barrage by knocking her second shot on the green and draining her putt for eagle three.

*Bob Bethel is either getting better @ golf or he’s getting old. Bob shot age twice in one week by recording a pair of 73’s. Congratulations!!

News & Notes: *With the heat of summer upon us, the green staff will be working extra hard to monitor the temperature of the greens. Timing is a big issue. You may see extra maintenance vehicles moving around the course going from green to green. If you come up to your approach shot & the green staff is on the green, please give them a moment to finish what they are doing. If they have to stop & wait for each group to play through they will not be able to keep up with the heat on all 18 greens. Thanks for your patience. *Unless you have a handicap flag, please return to the cart path at the green & white stakes which are approximately 100 yds from the green. Also please keep the carts on the path near the tee boxes.

Ladies Golf Association News from Carol Hodrick, President

As I sit here and type this newsletter, I realize that today is the 1st day of summer. The Summer Solstice is when we have more hours of daylight than on any other day of the year. That means we not only get to have a lot of daytime hours but we also get to enjoy the sunshine from this tropical high longer today than yesterday! YIKES! Hope everyone has been staying cool and hydrated!

This past month has been a busy one for the Ladies Golf Association. Besides regular Thursday league play, we had a mini-clinic with Ian focusing on sand play; we concluded our matches in Interclub; and we participated in the annual Member/Member tournament.

“Team USA goes to Rio” – was the theme for this year’s ladies Member/Member. The tournament chairs made a good theme choice with the Olympics happening in a few weeks. It was a great day in spite of the heat. We had almost 50% of the Ladies Association participate this year. I say kudos to Elaine Noonan and Jane Serues, tournament co-chairs for their ingenuity and hard work in putting the tournament together; to the Golf Shop for their hard work with registering, scoring, certificates, etc.; to Kristine for working with the co-chairs in the selection and preparation of the tee gifts; to the Greens Superintendent and his crew for the condition of the golf course and ice for towels and water on the course; to the Bag Guys for getting everyone loaded and in the correct place; and to the Food and Beverage Staff for the outstanding job with brunch and the social that followed. The winners for the 2016 Surf Club Ladies Member/Member tournament were:

1st FLIGHT 1st – 64 – Tommie Nobles and Daleen Burns 2nd – 65 – Sally Goliber and Melinda Chappell

2nd FLIGHT 1st – 64 – Jane Cole and Jane Serues 2nd – 65 – Katie Mortimer and Libby Kronenwetter

3rd FLIGHT 1st – 67 – Becky Rouse and Carol Cathcart 2nd – 69 – Karen Bard and Diane Duke

4th FLIGHT 1st – 68 – Ingrid Fallon and Jeddie Boone 2nd – 69 – Carol Wyatt and Donna Vanderbok

CLOSEST TO THE PIN - #6 – Rita Kruger and #13 – Megan Collins

LONGEST DRIVE - #7(forward tee) - Vivian Bayreuther and #10(red tee) - Melinda Chappell Ladies, if you haven’t already done so, you still have time to join the Ladies Association. Check in the Golf Shop for an application. We have 2 more association tournaments this year as well as mini-clinics and regular Thursday league play on the 2016 golf schedule.

It takes hundreds of good golf shots to gain confidence, but only one bad one to lose it. - Jack Nicklaus Carol Hodrick, President (843-251-3234)

Surf Club Tennis Team is 1-1 in League Play

The USTA Mixed Doubles League is two weeks into the season and the Surf Club Team, captained by Marla Sattele has a 1-1 record. We had a convincing victory over the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center and a disappointing loss against a tough team from Litchfield Stables Park. The winning team from the Grand Strand goes on to compete in the Regional, State and National finals. Our next home match is Tuesday July 5th at 6:30pm. Come on out to the tennis courts and root the team on!

To help you get connected to other Surf Club tennis players we maintain a list of all our tennis players as well as their contact information. If you would like to be included in Tennis Connect please let Dave Kranstuber know ([email protected]).

Kids Tennis Tuesdays at 4:00pm for ages 5-9 years old

Our goal is to bring the love of the game to your kids. We teach tennis fundamentals through games and child-friendly activities.
