On December 23, 1941, barely two weeks after Pearl Harbor was attacked, the original signed copies of the Declaration of Independence and of the U.S. Constitution were packed in a specially designed protective container, latched with padlocks and sealed with lead, weighing about 150 pounds. On December 26 and 27, 1941, accompanied by Secret Service agents, the documents traveled by train from Washington, D.C., to Louisville, Kentucky. The train was met in Louisville by a cavalry troop of the 13th Armored Division. Escorted by the armored division, the documents were taken to Fort Knox, Kentucky, where they were secretly stored in the United States Bullion Depository, a fortified vault-building used to store our country’s gold reserves and other precious items. After the war they were returned to Washington, D.C. Valuables from several European countries were also stored there during the War.

I am receiving some wonderful stories and pictures for the November Veteran’s issue! We would like to recognize as many MHS alums as we can that have served or are currently serving in our military branches so keep the articles and pictures coming! Please send your name, rank and branch of service, if retired or currently serving and year of graduation. Maybe send a picture of yourself in uniform! Tell us a little about the countries you served in. Room permitting we will use as many stories as we can. If you have children or grandchildren that are alums that have served or are serving send us their information too! Mail to: MHS Alumni Newsletter, 1531 E. 3rd St., Mishawaka, IN 46544 or email to [email protected].

AUGUST ALUMNI LUNCHEON WILL BE A BUSY ONE!

Be sure to attend the August 3 alumni luncheon where the annual OPEN CAR SHOW will take place. You are

invited to bring your hot rod classic, antique or any nice ride. Sept. 7 is scheduled for the rain date. If you have any questions, contact Vince Kertes ‘64 at 574.679.4087.

Also at the August luncheon we will hold a “school supply drive.” Much like the food drive we support at Christmas for MHS we are asking alums to bring a newly purchased school supply that will be donated to teachers and students throughout the school system. MEF will collect the supplies and distribute them to the needed schools. Below is the wish list of items: pencils, pens, Elmer’s glue sticks, 6” rulers, Wescott scissors, pencil cap erasers, pencil cases, Crayola crayons.

Lastly, Peter DeKever will be on hand for a book signing highlighting his new book Walking Mishawaka: Self-Guided Tours of Historic Sites in the Princess City. The book tells the stories behind 72 significant locations in Mishawaka and 32 graves in the historic cemeteries

on the city’s north side, organized in seven convenient walking tours. Accompanying these tours are dozens of historic photos and illustrations. Plan to purchase your autographed copy at the luncheon!

DID YOU THINK MHS ARE THE ONLY CAVEMEN?

I always thought Mishawaka High School had the distinct pleasure of being the only school in the country with a Caveman for a mascot. Turns out, I am wrong! Recently, I found out there are two other high schools using the Caveman to show their school spirit.

American Fork High School is a public high school in American Fork, Utah. Its mascot is the Caveman, chosen as a tribute to Timpanogos Cave. The school is perhaps best known for its award-winning marching band, which has regularly reached regional finals and national finals once, performed in high-profile parades, and been the state champion for over 20 years.

American Fork High School was ranked in the top-scoring 50 high schools in Utah, based on students’ scores in Utah’s Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT).[2] The percentage of students who met proficiency standards

were as follows: Language Arts 92%, Mathematics 45.6%, and Science 74.9%, all above average for the state. In addition, in 2011, 33% of seniors took one or more Advanced Placement test, with a pass rate of 78%.[3]

Carlsbard High School, located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, are known as the Cavemen (boys) and Cavegirls (girls), a tribute to the world-famous Carlsbad Caverns located near the city. The school’s mascot is a caveman named “Rusty.” Rusty received his name from the first Caveman statue placed on display in the Main building. This statue was often decorated and dressed in blue for special occasions (e.g. district championships, rivalry victories, state championships). Rusty was often subject to abuse from rival high schools. For example, Artesia High School students once kidnapped and dropped him at Lake Avalon, just north of Carlsbad. Local residents retrieved him out of the lake after a few years had passed. He now resides in the library (on the third floor of the Main Building) facing out the window and overlooking the campus. School colors are blue, silver, and white. Beginning in 2007, the school began the use of black on shirts along with band, cheerleading, and basketball uniforms.

It is my belief that MHS still has the better looking mascot and logo! GO CAVEMEN!
