Family Burn Camp Family Burn Camp was created in 2014 to provide survivors and their families a time to be together in a supportive environment—to build relationships, encourage one another, and have fun! It is sponsored by St. Florian Fire & Burn Foundation and the University of Iowa Burn Treatment Center.
Family Burn Camp is an opportunity for support of survivors, siblings, parents, spouses, and
children families to have fun in a safe, supportive environment survivors and families to achieve goals and feel
successful parents to see how pediatric survivors function in the
camp setting young survivors (< 8) to become familiar with the camp
environment in preparation for Miracle Burn Camp.
In 2014, five burn survivors and their families gathered at YMCA Camp Foster in Spirit Lake, Iowa over Labor Day weekend to participate in the first Family Burn Camp. YMCA Camp Foster is where Miracle Burn Camp is held every summer, so it was a great place to start Family Burn Camp.
This was a wonderful opportunity for the families of Miracle Burn Campers (and burn campers of the future) to glimpse the magic of Camp Foster. There’s nothing like singing the Superman blessing at breakfast, walking across the Backwards Bridge (backwards, of course!), learning to shoot a bow and arrow, taking a boat ride, making friends with a horse, and learning a new song at campfire – all in the same day! That first year, Family Burn Camp was held in conjunction with Camp Foster’s Annual Labor Day Family Camp. Burn Camp families were able to participate in the organized activities around camp and also spend time together as a
group, sharing their stories and supporting one another.
In 2015 Family Burn Camp was held at YMCA Camp Wapsie in Coggon, Iowa (near Cedar Rapids). This new location was introduced in an effort to minimize travel time for folks in the eastern half of the state. Once again, five burn survivors and
their families participated (3 returned from 2014, 2 were new in 2015). Activities included a pizza party, making s’mores, archery, Wildlife Detectives, canoeing, campfire, and a Mission Impossible evening program. There was free time to play games, take a walk, or chat with a new friend. Adults had time together to share their stories and support one another while the kids had fun playing team-building games.
While all of the survivors participating in Family Burn Camp so far have been burn camp age or younger, we would like to include burn survivors of all ages and their families. Family Burn Camp is a wonderful opportunity for the burn survivor community to come together for fellowship and fun.
We plan to alternate years between YMCA Camp Foster and YMCA Camp Wapsie.
Family Burn Camp 2016 will be held at YMCA Camp Foster the weekend of August 19-21. Activities will begin at 6:00pm on Friday and will wrap up by 10:30am on Sunday. As in past years, there will be a combination of organized activities and free time.
Family Burn Camp is one of three camps sponsored by St. Florian and UIHC Burn Treatment Center. The others are Miracle Burn Camp for pediatric survivors age 8-18 and Young Adult Burn Survivors Retreat for survivors age 18-29.

Burn Survivors Together
Burn Survivors Together – West Des Moines was held on Saturday, June 25th at West Des Moines Fire Station #18 on Grand Avenue. The firefighters of West Des Moines Fire Rescue were gracious hosts and IAFF Local 3586 provided lunch. Highlights included ice
breakers, a Fire House Detectives activity, and fun and games with the firefighters. Rumor has it there was an epic game of four square. This wraps up the Burn Survivors Together 2016 season.
This year we held BST gatherings in Bettendorf, Iowa City, Sioux City, and West Des Moines. Special recognition goes to survivor Thomas and his family – mom, Amanda, and brothers, Spenser and Leif, who participated in all four BST events this year! We had a great turnout this year overall and continue to be pleased with the way BST gatherings are helping to connect members of the burn community.
We are hoping to expand to more cities next year. Let us know if you would like to have a BST gathering in your community. Contact Nancy Johnson: [email protected] or 319-356-2248
Family Burn Camp 2015 (Camp Wapsie)
1st Annual Golf Scramble A little over 5 years ago Hope and Kris Shondel lost their home to a fire. During the fire, their daughter and granddaughter sustained severe 3rd degree burns. This family is amazing and has been through so much!!! They are an example of perseverance and strength.
In
appreciation for assistance they were given by the burn community, Hope and Kris planned and sponsored the 1st Annual Golf Scramble.
This event was held on June 12, 2016 at The Preserve at Rathbun Lake in Moravia, Iowa. Proceeds will be going to Miracle Burn Camp.
A sincere thank you to Hope and Kris for organizing this event at a very picturesque setting.
Coralville 10K Trail Run Local racers and the Barb’er Shop Tavern sponsored this run. The challenging run was along the Clear Creek Trail and single-track dirt trails found in the Clear Creek Greenway in Coralville.
Proceeds of the event were donated to St Florian. The Barb’er Shop Tavern also graciously donated 10% of sales for the event on the last day of business at their Coralville location. They are looking to open at a new and better location in the future.
A special thanks to Robbie Schwenker, Dave Jessen, Andy Phillips, the Bar'ber Shop Tavern and all their friends and family who helped make this event successful.
Awesome Biker Nights Awesome Biker Nights has been an annual motorcycle rally and entertainment event since 2000. Awesome Biker Nights has selected the St. Florian Fire and Burn Foundation as one of the charities to receive proceeds of their event for a number of years. This year the Sioux City event was June 16-18 and moved to a new venue, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and surrounding area. Awesome Biker Nights is well attended every year and this year was no exception. This event provides live music, bike show, poker run, contests and other fun events and entertainment. If you haven’t participated in the past, consider doing so next year!
MCPST Golf Outing The Eighth Annual Midwest Center for Public Safety Training Golf Outing was held on June 17, 2016 at the Palmer Hills Golf Course in Bettendorf, Iowa. The MCPST Golf Outing is sponsored by Werner Restoration. After learning about burn camps in Iowa and Illinois, Werner elected to expand beneficiaries receiving proceeds of this event to include the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (Camp “I am Me”) and St. Florian Fire and Burn Foundation (Miracle Burn Camp). A special thank you to Hilary, Jaclyn and the rest of the planning committee.
In addition to a fun day of golf, some of the 104 golfers also enjoyed some Minute to Win It games when golfers were backed up.
St Florian Fire & Burn Foundation burn survivor support programs and activities are run completely through donations and fundraising efforts. Without the support of the community and sponsors St. Florian would not be able to provide survivor support programs.
