Dear friends,
India needs more trained ophthalmic/ocular oncologists. With an aim to increase awareness about this subspecialty among budding ophthalmologists, educate them about various types of eye cancers, and to create a common platform for discussion for all practicing ophthalmic/ocular oncologists, The Operation Universal Institute for Eye Cancer conducted the first-ever exclusive ophthalmic/ocular oncology meeting on 9 July 2016. This meeting not only attracted participants from across India but also from the neighbouring countries including Bangladesh, Nepal and Indonesia. World renowned leader in Ocular Surface Tumors, Dr Carol L Karp from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute was the keynote speaker, and enlightened the delegates about the recent advances in Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia.Film actress and Television host, Ms Simi Garewal and Film Producer and Board of Trustee, L V Prasad Eye Institute, Shri Ramesh Prasad formally inaugurated the “Wall of Hope” on 18 July 2016. With newfound treatment modalities and support, we wish that one day we will have “Wall of Sight” - when all our patients with eye cancer will not only survive but also retain their eye and vision, and hopefully that day is not too far!We are also happy to begin the ICO three-month fellowship for diagnosis and treatment of retinoblastoma from this month. Our first candidate for this training comes from Bangladesh. The month of July that focused on education and training in addition to patient care, was indeed a very productive month. We now look forward to an equally productive month of August 2016.

I was very moved when I saw the wall and it is truly a wall of triumph - not only for these children alone, but also for the doctors who have made this possible,” said Simi. Rounak Prajapthi, a charming 3-year-old boy was diagnosed with retinoblastoma in both eyes. His left eye had to be removed, but his right eye was salvaged with a total of 12 cycles of systemic chemotherapy. His parents were delighted that he was doing well until one day, he complained of decreased vision in his only seeing eye at the age of 4.
Rounak was rushed to The Operation Eye Sight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. He was now diagnosed with recurrence of tumour in his only seeing eye and the parents were
devastated to hear this news. Rounak’s only question was “Mama, will I be able to see you again?” Dr Swathi Kaliki had prolonged discussions with the parents and decided to go ahead with a new treatment - intra-arterial chemotherapy. A small puncture was made into an artery in his right thigh and through it he received chemotherapy directly to his right eye. After receiving 4 cycles of intra-arterial chemotherapy he now is declared disease free.
With the support of The Operation Eye Sight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer, he was provided this treatment completely free of cost which otherwise would have costed his parents a lot. “I am a daily wage worker and wouldn’t have been able to afford this treatment. I am indebted to the institute for not only saving my child’s life but also his eye and vision. He is now a happy child and has started going to school,” says the delighted father.
