Pastor’s Ponderings

This month I’ve asked Toy Cline to share her experiences of Annual Conference 2014 with the church. Special thanks to her for representing Grace!

- Pastor Bryan

The North Alabama Conference is a connection of approximately 739 churches in North Alabama. Each year the pastors and laity from each church in the Conference gather together for several days to worship together, to share stories of the ministries and missions that are happening in our Conference and to attend to Conference business. This year the Annual Conference was held at Birmingham Southern College from June 1 through June 4. I was blessed to represent Grace as your lay delegate to Annual Conference. The theme of this year’s Conference was Plant: Grounded in Christ.

They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream, it shall not fear when heat comes,

and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious,

and it does not cease to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:8 (NRSV)

I would like to share with you some of the highlights from this year’s Annual Conference. As you are aware, our Conference has been involved in the Imagine No Malaria campaign for several years. Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary effort of the people of The United Methodist Church, putting our faith into action to end preventable deaths by malaria in Africa, especially the death of a child or a mother. This year, our Conference has a goal of raising $1M dollars for efforts to eradicate malaria. We at Grace have made contributing to Imagine No Malaria, one of our mission priorities for this year.

We are certainly no strangers to mosquitos here in Huntsville. But, for us, they are just an annoyance. For people in Africa, they are a serious threat. Every 60 seconds, malaria claims a life in Africa. Every $10 raised saves a life. At the worship service on Sunday evening each church in the Conference presented their offering to Imagine No Malaria. The $251,129.22 offered that evening was the single largest offering in the history of the Annual Conference, and it brought the total raised this year to $911,036.96 – so close to

the $1M goal! Think about this. It has probably taken you about 60 seconds to read this far in this article. That is one life lost in Africa due to malaria. But, through the combined efforts of our Conference, we are making a real difference. The money raised this year could save close to 100,000 lives!

If you are interested in learning more or becoming more involved in this effort I encourage you to visit the Imagine No Malaria website at http://www.imaginenomalaria.org/.

Another highlight at annual conference is the Service of Ordination. On Monday evening, the Service of Ordination, Commissioning and Licensing was held. During this holy time of worship first time local pastors received their license, provisional members were commissioned, elders were ordained and the orders of one elder was recognized. This is a beautiful and moving service. But, it was particularly special this year because Todd Noren–Hentz was recognized as an elder. It was a blessing to share in this time with Todd, Christy and Bryan. Congratulations Todd!

We heard many inspiring speakers who shared stories about the missions they are involved in, and who shared ideas that we could bring home to our local church. In light of our churches goals for 2014 and 2015 related to missions, small groups and redesigning our services, I wanted to share some comments from our closing speaker. Rev. Alan Beasley, pastor of Jasper First UMC, told a story of serving as the evangelist at a District revival in New York. On his way home he sensed God encouraging him to share the same message with the North Alabama Annual Conference. He said, “If we look at every number given to us, we discover we are failing at what we are supposed to be doing.”

As a reminder, our Conference mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. At Grace we have a priority to create points of connection that grow God’s Kingdom. Rev. Beasley encouraged the Conference and its churches to take risks. He further noted that “Risk does not mean doing something different. Risk is something you do for the glory of God that you will absolutely fail at if God doesn’t show up.” I encourage each of you, especially our Ministry Team Leaders, to pray for God’s guidance as we seek to create points of connection to grow God’s kingdom. And, to pray for the courage to take risks.

For more details on Annual Conference, please go to the Conference web page for a full recap of each day. http://www.northalabamaumc.org/blogs

Family Life Ministry News

Pick-up Basketball

We have Pick-up Basketball every Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm in the gym. Interested in staying informed about Pick-up Basketball? Ask Pastor Todd to put you on the email list! We also have a Facebook and Twitter for basketball if you’d like to keep up that way - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GraceUMCBB Twitter: @GraceUMCBB

Grace Family Fun Fly

Sunday, July 6, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm

We fun-loving pilots, spectators, family, and friends get together in the Grace Ministry Center Gym once a month to fly our small indoor electric radio-controlled airplanes, helicopters, and multi-copters. New pilots, experienced pilots, and spectators of all ages are always welcome to sport fly for fun. We have several small electric R/C race cars available for younger children to drive, without cost or obligation.

We have a need for Grace UMC participants who can help hold these Fun Fly events and who could potentially take over hosting them if Jim is unavailable due to his ongoing chronic and acute health issues. Contact Jim Marconnet at [email protected] or (256) 772-3946 for more information.

Grace Disc Golf Association

The Family Life Ministries Team has started the

Grace Disc Golf Association. It’s for all ages and

skill levels. Disc Golf is free to play and easy to

learn. If you don’t have your own discs, we’ve got

some to share. On the last Sunday of each month

through September, we’ll gather for lunch

somewhere quick at noon and at a different Disc Golf course

at 1:00 pm. So join us for lunch, or just join us at the course.

If it is raining, we will not meet. Our next outing will be on

Sunday, July 27. We’ll eat at Hardee’s (Drake & Leeman

Ferry) and play disc golf at Drake Springs (part of Brahan

Springs Park). This course is a little trickier to find than the

main Brahan Springs course—it is by the duck pond on the

same side of Drake as Jerry Damson Honda. Check out the

church website for future dates and locations. For more

information, contact John Lawson at (256) 503-2700 or

Pastor Todd at [email protected].

Men of Grace

Each week at 11:30 am various men from Grace UMC and

their friends gather for lunch at a local restaurant to talk about

life, faith, and our church. We rotate to a different day of the

week each month. In July we will meet on Tuesdays.

To receive information about upcoming lunch gatherings, visit http://graceumchsv.org/mailman/listinfo/mog_graceumchsv.org and sign up for our email list, or contact Buddy McMullin at (256) 683-4164 or [email protected].

Parents’ Night Out

PNO is for infants and children up to 5th Grade and is conducted on select Friday evenings. PNO is a “drop-in” type program and is open for participating parents and children between 5:00 and 10:00 pm. PNO relies upon adult volunteers, paid nursery staff,

and youth helpers. We hope you will invite your friends, neighbors, and co-workers to be a part of this program.

The next scheduled PNO is Friday, July 25, from 5:00 to 10:00 pm and costs $10 per child, with a $20 family maximum. Children 5 and under are asked to be picked up by 9:00 pm. You can register online at www.graceumchsv.org/pno.

The remaining 2014 PNO dates are Friday, September 26, and Friday, December 5.

Grace Golf Association

The Grace Golf Association (GGA) is an informal golf group open to all members and friends of Grace United Methodist Church. Our mission is simple: enjoy Christian fellowship and friendly competition playing a game we enjoy. Men and women, juniors, seniors, hackers, and scratch players are all welcome.

GGA plays once per month between March and October. Contact Scott Kowerduck ([email protected]) for more information or to get on the email list for information pertaining to GGA events. The next GGA outing will be on Saturday, July 19, at Becky Pierce/Huntsville Municipal off Airport Road in Huntsville.

2014 Church Picnic - Save the Date

The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed our time together. Upcoming Meeting Join us on Tuesday, July 14, when our guest speaker will our own Associate Pastor, Todd Noren-Hentz. Pastor Todd will talk to us about why he became a minister and a Methodist. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about Pastor Todd, and enjoy a time of fellowship.

Whether you're facing family crises, medical diagnoses, relationship troubles, doubts, or fears, you'll come away encouraged that even though it may not feel that way, you are exactly where Christ wants you to be! New Banners for Hallway and Sanctuary We are in the process of raising funds which will enable us to purchase new banners to decorate the hallways outside the Sanctuary, as well as decorating the Sanctuary itself. If you would like to be a part, please place a check into the offering plate made out to the church with “Banner Fund” noted in the memo line. Thank you!

Sunday School Attendance Records Keeping accurate records of attendance for each Sunday School class plays an important part in submitting yearly reports to our Charge Conference. Class attendance needs to be recorded on a regular basis in both the adult and children’s classes. Please help us out by being mindful of this need, and take the few moments necessary to fill out your class attendance books.

Thank you!

The Grace Youth Times

Issue #46 July 2014

Due to budget cutbacks, we’ve eliminated all fact checking from the Grace Youth Times. Therefore, you may not be able to believe anything you read on this page.

RUMOR – YOUTH TO LIVING STONES HUNTSVILLE, AL – A completely unreliable source has leaked information about the upcoming trip to Camp Living Stones in Tennessee. The source claims that GUMY will be attending the camp over Labor Day Weekend, August 30 – September 1. The trip supposedly includes high and low ropes courses, Gaga ball, and a rafting trip down the Ocoee River.

Some Youth remain skeptical, “I mean, sometimes these rumors start in the youth group. You have to be careful which ones you believe and which ones you don’t.” If the trip will happen, it will cost $165 per student, with money from accounts available to offset the cost. A $30 deposit would be due by August 3, and the remaining balance due by August 24. A sign up sheet would be placed in the youth room at some point in the month of July.

Again, these are just rumors.

GUMY CHALLENGES GRACE UMC

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Despite their embarrassing defeat in kickball last fall, GUMY has made an open call challenging all of Grace UMC to a volleyball match. “It’s past time for us to declare a rematch from the kickball debacle,” said one GUMY student. “The adults around the church have really been rubbing it in, and we plan to make them pay for all of that mockery.”

Adults around the church have a different view, “If we can take them in kickball, we can take them in volleyball. I guess they want to get beat in every sport.” said one young adult.

Pastor Bryan Sisson enjoys the competitive spirit. “The youth need to learn about competition. They also need to learn about losing gracefully. I think it’s good that our church consistently beats them. It builds character.”

The match is set for Sunday, July 27 at 5:30pm. Win or lose, the youth will treat the adults to pizza.

LOCKED OUT! Grace UMC Youth have been warned that on Friday, August 8, the doors to the church will be locked tight. Any youth on the property at 9:00 pm that evening will be placed on a charter bus and taken around Huntsville for various activities, including laser tag and a movie. Students will be charged $25 to cover expenses.
