Page 1 The Katherine Christian bookshop project required some renovations to the exterior of the shop. This Christian Bookshop is being financed by Bruce Morrow and his family and is very significant as it is one of only a few Christian bookshops in the entire Northern Territory. Indigenous folk from outlying communities and locals will benefit greatly from this bookshop. The team consisted of Bruce & Pam Collard, Kevin & Eira Sproats, Mike & Melody Nicholls, and, in the fourth week, we were joined by Tom & Gaye Redsell and John & Anne Cooper. The first task was to erect a balcony come carport along the length of the bookshop (16m long x 3.6m high). Being a steel structure, there was a great deal of welding. The balcony floor consisted of compressed cement sheeting and of course a balustrade around the entire balcony was installed. The ladies were invaluable with their follow-up painting of all this steel work. The second part of the project was the tiling of the bookshop, toilets, bathroom and office floors with 160 square metres of tiles. The team also completed the front stairs to the top residence and the rear internal stairs. Pam, Eira & Melody were also asked by Bruce’s wife Janine (a Special Needs teacher) to assist her at the Katherine Special Schools’ Sports Day. It was a great experience and a joy to meet some of the students and encourage them in their events and to present them with their ribbons. The whole team also had the novel experience of assisting with a Crocodile Race down a small section of the Katherine River. This fundraiser event was for Kintore Special School to raise money for a new bus with wheelchair lift. One thousand small plastic crocodiles were released upstream for the ‘race’ while many people waited with baited breath as the little green crocs gradually came down towards the finish line. The winning little “croc” was out on his own and then, after some time, the rest came down in large groups making Kevin and the other men’s job of catching them in nets very difficult. It was a fun morning followed by a BBQ lunch with much needed funds raised. Fortunately no real crocs were seen in the river at the time as they are known to frequent this area. Safari team 1 has moved on to commence work at Kununurra so please pray for us. The Katherine Christian bookshop project required some renovations to the exterior of the shop. We arrived in Mareeba on Sunday 18th May. It was great joining up with Chris & Sue Mallam and Anne & John Cooper, as well as continuing working with Gaye & Tom Redsell. IMLA (Indigenous Missions Links Australia) made us very welcome, so once the campsite was established we were able to have some time of fellowship with some of the indigenous families that were staying at the centre. There were a number of jobs for the boys to do. These included installing roller doors on an existing large shed (as well as building the framework for the roller doors to be attached to), stoves to be repaired and replaced, guttering to be replaced, waterproof roofing to be erected over caravan accommodation as well as other electrical jobs plus other maintenance jobs at the Basalt St residence as well as the Doyle St site. During this time the women were the support team which allowed them to participate in local bible studies and prayer groups within the community. While staying in Mareeba we spent a couple of days up in Mossman where roofing needed to be replaced as well as some electrical work. While in Mareeba the first State of Origin was played, so with a very balanced (or divided!) team (2 Maroons & 2 Blues) it meant a very interesting night (some unnamed MMM State managers had difficulty accepting the results) but great fun was had by some. From Mareeba it was off to Cooktown. What a beautiful place we stayed in while working in Cooktown. Our host's Ron & Bethany Webber (Members of the Cooktown Baptist Church) made us very welcomed as well as all those attending the church. Not only did we have to replace and repair the Eastern wall of the Church (it's also meant rebuilding windows and bogging up those that could not be replaced), the front facia on the church had to be replaced which meant trying to find a Cherry Picker as the pitch of the roof was too high to get to with the scaffolding. Then it had to be painted. While doing all this we had to contend with Cooktown’s renowned "bullet winds" and some rain - uncharacteristic for this time of year. Everyone was extremely pleased with the end result so headed off to Katherine to join Team 1 (only around 2600km’s ). Thanks to Chris and Sue for joining our team and adding your talents and humour. We appreciate all you contributed. They leave us here to travel back to Ballina. (NO FISH YET..BUT KEEP WATCHING).

The team enjoyed a one day break from the job at Katherine by going to Pine Creek, a small town 90kms north of Katherine. The little community church needed some repairs to the floor tiles which had cracked in one part

and had risen up down the centre of the church. The team consisted of Bruce & Pam Collard, Kevin & Eira Sproats and Mike & Melody Nicholls. The night before the job was carried out we camped at Pussy Cat Flats Camping Area just out of town and enjoyed a meal together from the racecourse restaurant. Rosemary from the church made us very welcomed, taking us to Mazy’s for

coffee and a garden tour of her B & B. She also took us to the Railway Museum, where she volunteers, and the team repaired a window that had been broken when they had a break-in. The broken tiles near the entry were removed and replaced with contrasting tiles and the tiles down the centre that had lifted were removed and then replaced. Rosemary was very pleased with the outcome and thankful that we were able to fix the problem. Even though it was a Public Holiday the team was happy to serve this church and community in a special way.

MMM NSW Serving SU in Sydney

In the last two weeks of May a team consisting of Frank Wilkie, Bob and Joy Wells, John Kerr, Ian and Ellen Dawson and Paul Barnham installed Sound absorber onto the beams supporting the first floor of the Scripture Union building at Rydalmere, a suburb of Sydney. The result was improved acoustics to their rooms and blocking out noise between floors. As well as this the team did many other jobs on SU’s list of unfinished things; painting, plastering, cleaning, tiling etc. all around the building. They would like us to return for future project work! Well done team on another job well done.

Are you interested in a Tasmania Safari? A group is forming with the thought of heading to Tasmania in mid January 2015 (of course summertime!!) for 3-4months. Group discounts are available for teams of 15 plus people, on the Spirit of Tasmania. So it would be great if we could get some expressions of interest so planning can get underway. The Tassie mob are welcoming as always, and a list of projects around the state are proposed—as well as plenty of R & R, organised activities and sight-seeing. Phill and Gwen Hall will be team leading with Rod & Lynn Dowling (Tassie Managers) to assist with details. Please be praying if this is something you would love to be part of, and make contact with Phill 0428233317, [email protected] Rod 0417590740, [email protected]

Yes, it is a castle … MMM Vic volunteers Murray Patterson and Kim Roediger had the rare (if not unique) opportunity to start a project in Yellingbo, and a castle. Having seen and read of lots of MMM projects over the years, this may well be the first castle MMM has ever worked on. All jokes aside, while the work was straight forward - remove a bathroom to enable trades to come in and fit-out a kitchette, the ministry of Yellingbo Castle is anything but straight forward. Lindsay and Myk McKenzie who run Betel Ministries from Yellingbo seek to give broken lives new direction, restoring homeless and substance dependant men to productive

independent lifestyles. It is such a privilege to be able to serve a ministry such as this. This is why our ministry is so important - to have an impact Kingdom and for Christ by serving those who serve. Well done team - Praise the Lord!

MMM Vic - Southern Safari Nhill Presbyterian Church, Victoria

What a great little spot on the Western Highway half way between Adelaide and Melbourne (albeit a bit cool this time of the year). A major wheat & grain town, with the other main local industry is Love a Duck; a duck farm and processing plant, for export and the local market. It is busy little town with lots of freight trains and even The Ghan running to Melbourne on certain days. The “Southern Safari” team that came here comprised of Brian & Kathy Chisholm and Robert & Kerryn Wreith from Vic, and Neil & Chris Thompson and Phill & Gwen Hall from NSW. We started work on the 125 Year Old weatherboard building with external work; sanding, replacing rotted and damaged boards, spot priming and then painting the outside. We did need to alternate with the inside work by the warmth of the open

fire - especially when it was too cold or damp outside. With an efficient team, we were also had time to paint the Kitchen Annex on the side of the Hall. We were able to borrow some trestles and planks, extension ladder, but needed to hire a Cherry Picker for a day to get to the top of the Gable End. We thank God for answered prayer for safety. Fellowship was enjoyed by the ladies with having the afternoon off for coffee and shopping. Thanks team for another well done job as was conveyed to us over lunch by the congregation.

Still with a surprise for us after all these years...

Rob Saunders, as many of you know, has been around MMM circles since a few months after MMM’s launch in 1975 ….that’s right, nearly 40 years. But this is not a story about his length of service. It is, in fact, about his dietary habits. Rob was, is and always will be a meat and three veg man … but the veggies are purely optional (ie when Shirley is not watching). And when he asks for meat, he likes it well done. And by well done we mean black all over. Any colour other than black is having it ‘rare’. So imagine the surprise the Head Office team when he cam into lunch not long ago with some noodles … he even appears to be enjoying them! Bless you Rob - you are such a treasure. An integral part of the MMM family.
