July brings with it the awesome spectacle

of Hakata Gion Yamakasa. The festival

centers around a unique helter-skelter race

at 4:59am on July 15th, when thousands

of men from seven districts race through

    the streets carrying decorative one-ton

floats. Our online guide includes this years

    schedule, history & more!

    Yasushi Umebayashi has manned the

kitchen at Gokoku since it opened in

    1999. The owner-chef makes every-

thing himself, from the trademark omurice to

the desserts. The omurice is so popular that

long lines form at lunchtime and on week-

ends. The rice, a mixture of rice cooked with

barley and buttered mentaiko rice, is topped

with an incredibly fluffy omelet. One stroke

of your spoon will reveal savory, semi-liquid

egg on the inside and the pink hue of the

porridge is also a big hit with customers of

all ages. The portions at Gokoku are sizable,

so we suggest you avoid the lunch rush and

    enjoy a leisurely, filling meal.

We recommend you try a bite before adding

any ketchup. Umebayashi used to work in

the Kanto area and his friends there raved

about his omuricehis family is in the seafood

    From organizing wel-

    come events at the

    Port of Hakata, to

    sharing information,

    resources and maps with

    overseas visitors, Yan Zhang

is always busy as the only non-

    Japanese employee at the Fu-

    kuoka Convention & Visitors

Bureau. I want to help visitors

enjoy their stay in Fukuoka as

    much as possible, she says

    with an enthusiastic sparkle in

    her eyes. Yan graduated uni-

    versity and entered the work-

force back home in China but,

unable to shake an urge to live

    abroad, she moved to Fukuoka

12 years ago. She took up her

    current post at the convention

bureau in 2010, where the aim

is to enhance the urban appeal

    of Fukuoka while disseminating

    tourism information. With the

influx of cruise ships from China recently Yan has become even busier. One of her personal goals is

to visit some port cities outside of Fukuoka to gain perspective and insights to help her satisfy visi-

tors even more. To those visiting Fukuoka, she recommends a trip to Kushida Shrine, Tochoji Tem-

ple, and a traditional Japanese meal of kaiseki ryori. Yan loves Fukuoka, saying its a compact city

which is fun and easy to walk around, and she vows to keep trying her best to share Fukuokas best

points with travellers of the world. FCVB website: www.welcome-fukuoka.or.jp

Construction Revs up on Nanakuma Line ExtensionFukuoka City is working on an extension of

the subways Nanakuma Line from Tenjin-

Minami Station to Hakata Station. Once

connected, travel time to Hakata will be re-

Making Dreams Reality in FukuokaOn Mar. 28, 2014, the national government

designated Fukuoka City as a National Stra-

tegic Zone for Job Creation, a special area

where startups will be encouraged and reg-

ulations that hinder business activities will

be relaxed. A committee of city and national

    government officials and private companies

will be established to create a detailed plan.

After the Prime Minister approves the plan

this summer, relaxed regulations and other

initiatives will be rolled out gradually. Inqui-

by cooling the body and drinking fluids to
