    Presidents Report July 2012

    Fellow Members

    Warmest regards,

    Charles Kerzic

    ACI Southern California President 2012

It's hard to believe the year is half over. I hope your year is going well. The Chapter had a fantastic

event last month at Hanson Aggregate's Irwindale quarry. The tour of the dredge was great. Those who

attended the tour witnessed just how difficult the extraction of a product that is necessary to our

industry can be. It made me think about what will happen in the coming years when the local supply of

raw materials is not readily available. All of us in attendance learned alot from the tour. A special

thanks to Hanson for taking the time to host us and open up their plant for our tour.

Our August meeting will be at Luminarias Restaurant, we will have a presentation by Dave Flax withThe Euclid Chemical Company on "Concrete with Reduced Shrinkage, Cracking, and Curling". Please

    join me there.

Information will be coming soon about the September meeting. Don't forget the Pankow Awards will

be due in October so begin thinking about those projects that you will want to nominate.

As we get into summer and we get busy with work and busier with family it's important to remember to

always be safe. Have a successful summer.

This publication serves a broad range of informational needs for improving quality, safety, andeconomy in all types of formwork. For the experienced designer or builder of formworks, it is a readyreference on material properties, design data, and construction suggestions. For the architect orengineer, it adds guidance relating to structural design details and the problems and possibilities ofexecuting them in formwork. For the novice, the book explains basic design principals and provides anintroduction to many common formwork practices. This edition includes new material on single sidedwall forms, insulating concrete forms, pressure formulas with coefficients for differing weights and mixchemistries, and expanded text on multistory shoring systems. To learn more or to order thispublication, go to Formwork for Concrete, Seventh Edition 2005. $194.50 (ACI members $115.00);Order Code SP47TH.EM.

CONCRETE WITH REDUCED SHRINKAGE, CRACKING, AND CURLING.

Presented by: Dave Flax- The Euclid Chemical Company

    Presentation Outline:

This presentation will cover a great many topics that affect the shrinkage, cracking, and curling of concrete.Typical concrete shrinks about 0.06%. In this presentation the emphasis for the concrete mix design will be onreducing the shrinkage to 0.04%, 0.02% or even 0.00% by the use of the proper coarse aggregate size &quantity and by the use of shrinkage reducing & shrinkage compensating admixtures. We will cover how towrite a spec to achieve these low shrinkage percentages.

But if we don't want cracks and curling, getting the mix design right is only the beginning. We will also look atwhat happens after the concrete is placed including the use of an evaporation retarder, proper curing, jointlayout, sawcutting, etc.

There are many tests that are typically run on the concrete at the jobsite and in the weeks following, but none ofthem tell us right there at the job site in real time if concrete is likely to shrink, crack, and curl. We will coverthe one job site test method that will provide that critical information immediately.

    Biographical sketch:

The presenter: Dave Flax of The Euclid Chemical Company has a Civil Engineering Degree from RPI and over35 years experience as a field engineer, a contractor, and a researcher with the Corps of Engineers. He hasearned his CDT and CCPR from CSI.
