The dawn of summer is a great time for starting new hobbies and in this issue we bring you a beginner’s guide to rock climbing as well as a great route for a first-timer’s road ride.

We have also explored an amazing diet that involves eating high fat, high cholesterol food but which leaves you fighting fit, slim and healthy. We couldn’t believe it either. The best thing is that it involves eating plenty of French specialities. Yey!

We’ve also got musical this summer by exploring the increasingly popular world of Dubstep and an interview with one of our favourite resort musicians, Alex Rajkowski.

Yodel has combined so from now on it will encompass all three resorts; Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz and we can all enjoy the events and information of our next-door neighbours.

We’ll leave you now to enjoy the July issue of Yodel, which we hope you’ll be reading, bathed in lots of delicious summer sunshine.

Enjoy!

Hometown, age, sponsors and bike?

Cairns, Australia 23Hutchinson United RideMorewood Makulu

How surprised were you that you could return to the world cup circuit and not just compete, but win as well?

It was awesome. I wasn't sure how I would do, I had been training hard and my goal was to be on the podium. I was so happy after qualifying, seeing that I could do really well and then taking the win was just amazing. Perfect start!

Did you miss racing?

Yep, absolutely. I love racing so much - it’s the best. I am so happy to be racing again.

Your ability to return at a high level after a big break was a surprise to some. Do you wonder why you struggled to get a deal from sponsors that enables you to compete year round at the top even though your talent is clear for all to see?

I think that mountain biking has come a long way and it is going places. It was a hard few years back then but it keeps growing and getting more exposure and

more people are learning about it. The more it grows, the easier it will be for girls to get good sponsors and ride on a good team. I’m not disappointed, everything that has happened has worked out for the best and I am just stoked to be riding and racing.

Do you enjoy travelling and racing?

Yes, I do very much. I’m pretty lucky as we get to go to some cool places. I would like to go to South America though.

How does life at home compare to racing bikes around the world?

I work in a sand mine full time when I'm home, so it’s really different. I feel like I live two completely different lives. I go to work as a sand miner everyday, then I will be racing the world cup as the leader...it’s kind of crazy!

Have you considered moving to Europe to increase your exposure?

I like Europe, I really enjoy travelling and riding there, it’s great. I love living in Australia though and I don't think I could leave. At least not for too long....

What's your favourite thing about travelling the world?

The amazing riding, the food, the different people, the cultures and the scenery.

What do you miss most when you're away from home?

I'm going to miss all my friends at the gym and at work, that’s where I spend all my time and I'll miss that heaps.

What is the biggest influence on you and your riding style?

My brother Mick (Sik Mik Hannah) has definitely had the most influence on my style. I never ever wanted to look like a girl rider so I've always tried to just ride like he rides...

Does having a big brother like Mick help you stay fast?

Staying fast is more about the amount of training that you do. At races it’s so good to have him there and ride with him and follow his lines. That makes me faster!

Who do you train with at home?

During the week I'm training with all my buddies at the gym, then on the weekend I'm usually out doing runs. I usually ride with anyone who is keen. Recently, I‘ve been riding with this really keen and fast young dude, Remy Morton - he’s awesome to train with and always keen to ride.

What makes Ozzie racers so fast?

I reckon it’s the crazy genes, and also that we can ride all year round, I'm pretty sure that would be why.

Do you feel more comfortable now within yourself to compete at the highest level since having to stop racing? Financially? Mentally? Business wise?

Yeah, I guess that’s it. I've grown up a lot in the last four years, I know exactly what I want and I know that I need to be 100% focused and train hard to get it. I want to race the best that I can in every race that I compete in.

What do you think of the deficit between the worlds of men's and women's downhill biking?

I think it’s fair, the ability that the top men have astounds me, they are amazing and for sure the girls will never be at that level. I think people are more accepting of the women’s racing and realising that we ride the same hard tracks and are usually pretty fast. I understand why there is a deficit but I think people enjoy watching and the sport is getting bigger in both the men’s and the women’s.

Who do you most admire and why?

Anne Caroline Chausson. She had women’s mountain biking at another level, she pushed the girls to be faster and faster and be better than just a girl. I love that, and I can see that it’s happening again.

Who are your predictions for the top podium spots this year?

In the men’s I would guess: Greg Minnaar, Aaron Gwin, Steve Smith and Mick Hannah but there are so many fast guys that it’s hard to say really.

In the women’s: Rachel Atherton, Floriane Pugin, Emmeline Ragot, Manon Carpenter and then there are the other chicks that are super fast. I think it’s going to be a really exciting year of racing.

Do you consider it to be a help or hindrance to have started your career in the shadow of your brother?

I think it’s fine, either way I love riding and I chose to ride. I was lucky that he was one step ahead of me...I kind of learnt from him and what’s happened throughout his career. I would say yes it’s a positive…for sure!

Do your strong religious views ever affect your riding or decisions on sponsorship etc?

Being a Christian doesn't affect my riding, I am very driven and motivated, I have a passion for riding and racing and I think what I believe in has given me that extra drive.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank for your return?

Yes! Thanks to everyone who’s been so supportive of my return to racing. Thanks to the sponsors looking after our team "Hutchinson United Ride" and thanks to all my riding friends in Australia. Thanks to my family and thanks to Aaron and Nigel at Nsdynamics for helping me get a great start back into racing. Thanks Jim and Remy too. And Kane Smith!

And thank you Tracey!

Following the massive success of the Basscamp Festival this winter in Morzine, it felt as though Dubstep had wormed its way into the hearts of many non-believers.

The distinct sound of Dubstep has always created a definitive love/hate relationship with the crowds. The harmonic wobwobwob of the bass has the ability to create euphoria in some and dread in others.

Dubstep has its roots set firmly in South London in the late nineties when tracks began to surface that combined garage tracks with break beats and elements of drum and bass. It was not until 2002 that the actual term ‘Dubstep’ was coined by record labels like Tempa.

Momentum for this new genre gradually built throughout the noughties with Radio 1 DJ, John

Peel acting as a major supporter by playing the music in the mainstream. Towards the end of the last decade, Dubstep’s place was firmly cemented in the conscience of the media industry.

Big brands have since used this genre in their advertising, perhaps most memorably an advert for Weetabix Spoonsize featuring nine-year-old street dance phenomenon, Arizona Snow. The unexpected moment a young girl stops eating to street dance to Mord Fustang’s ‘A New World’ with her teddy bears will raise a smile from even the biggest Dubstep doubter.

Other big name brands to have featured this style of music include Samsung, Renault, Microsoft and Lucozade. The fact that there is no set method for producing Dubstep may encourage a variety that has a greater ability to appeal to the masses. It is instead a freeform, artistic style that allows for varying interpretation and therefore a wider range of tunes.

With the huge advances that Dubstep has made into the mainstream, it seems clear that love it or hate it, this genre is here to stay.

THE FRENCH PARADOXEat fat…be slim and healthy. It sounds too good to be true and as an advert for a diet company you probably wouldn’t believe it but this statement has been true in France for centuries.

The great French paradox has baffled dieticians and experts for years; how do the French eat high amounts of cream, butter and fat but have one of the lowest rates of coronary heart disease (CHD) in the world? According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, despite an intake of saturated fat that is 50% higher than the US, people in France have a 30-40% lower chance of developing CHD.

One element could be the portion sizes in France, which tend to be smaller than other countries. Compared to the US they are a massive 30-50% smaller, so despite the high level of fats, the calorie intake is a lot lower. The fats in these foods also act as a hunger suppressant, reducing the necessity for snacks which in the US amounts to an enormous $30 billion industry!

The most surprising theory is that this paradox can be explained by the consumption of red wine throughout the country. The 1995 Copenhagen Heart Study

confirmed the health benefits of moderate but regular wine consumption.

There is an antioxidant in grape skins called resveratrol that aids weight loss and overall good health. In other words, sinking three bottles of Merlot every now and then will not have great benefits for your health but regular glasses will! Drinking a little alcohol each day, particularly wine, has often since been associated with an increased life expectancy.

Goose and duck fats are also popular ingredients in French delicacies including pates and foie gras. These can help to keep cholesterol levels down as they have a composition that is closer to that of olive oil than butter.

Dr William Clower, author of ‘The French Don’t Diet Plan’ took time to answer a few questions yodel had about this theory…

What are the main factors that allow the French to live a long and healthy life? One factor is the quality of their foods, which can provide the powerful antioxidants and healthy oils that can stave off chronic diseases.

But the other aspect is simply that the volume of food consumed is more appropriate for long-term health. In population studies, as well as research on experimental animals, smaller quantity consumption is associated with higher longevity. Do you think the social nature of their meal times could help? Absolutely. Taking your time and sharing the meal with the people around you has a number of physiological consequences that help you become a more conscious eater – which, by the way, helps prevent you from over-consuming. Can red wine really help you be healthy? Yes. Red wine has a trove of polyphenols – as well as the currently popular resveratrol – which are wonderful for your heart. But, just as anything can become bad for you when it is over-consumed, the very same red wine that is good for your heart will become bad for your liver if you have too much. Do you think there is a link between high fat foods and cholesterol or has this been disproven? There are good fats and bad fats, just as there is good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. You very much need those healthy fats in your diet. So the idea that you should avoid foods with fats has certainly been disproven, as we learn more about the nature of those molecules and their relation to things such as heart disease.

If you have any questions for Dr Will Clower, he would be happy to answer them simply email him; [email protected].

We’ll have to miss out on the free keyrings, baseball caps and tight lycras this year as the Tour de France will be skipping past us but that’s no reason not to support this epic race.

The Tour de France has been a veritable institution in France and across the world ever since it began over a century ago in 1903. The race covers a distance of more than 3600 km over a period of three weeks and is a popular spectator sport, with hundreds of thousands of people lining the streets as the race teams make their way along.

As a result of the first and second world wars, several Tour de Frances were cancelled and so this year will be the 99th outing of the race. The Tour will run from the 30th June until the 22nd July.

The race is split into day-long segments known as stages and the coveted yellow jersey is worn by the rider with the lowest

aggregate time from the previous day’s racing. While the route of the tour changes yearly, the race always ends in Paris with one of the most climatic stages being along the Champs-Élysées.

The arduous nature of the Tour de France has long been revered by athletes around the world. The total climb of the Tour de France has been described as climbing Everest three times. It is the equivalent of running a marathon every day for three weeks and the riders consume up to 10,000 calories a day to compensate. That’s the equivalent of 17 Big Macs…everyday…for three weeks.

Most people will realise that Lance Armstrong has won the Tour de France the most amount of times but more surprisingly, by a long way, he has not spent the most number of days in yellow. Belgian, Eddy Merckx has spent 28 days more than Lance Armstrong in the yellow jersey despite having won the overall race five times in comparison to Armstrong’s seven.

Odds on favourites this year:

6/5 – Bradley Wiggins

As one of the biggest Tour de France hopes that Britain has ever seen, there is a lot of responsibility riding on the shoulders of Wiggins. In 2009, he came 4th – the joint highest place for a Brit in Tour de France history. He also rode to a second consecutive victory in the Criterium du Dauphine, which finished in Chatel in June this year.

2/1 – Cadel Evans

Winner of the Tour de France 2011, Australian Cadel Evans was originally the favourite to take this prestigious win for a second year running but Wiggin’s odds increased dramatically following the Criterium du Dauphine. A former mountain bike world cup winner, Evans turned to full-time road cycling in 2001.

16/1 - Denis Menchov

As the third most likely contestant to win the Tour de France, Menchov’s odds are surprisingly high, which only goes to show the strength of the top seeded two. Russian, Menchov finished second in the 2010 Tour and his form is looking like he could follow that up with a great spot in this year’s tour.

LYON/CITYGUIDEEach month Yodel will be bringing you the highlights of some of the amazing cities that surround our area. To kick things off we’ll be looking at Lyon…

The city of Lyon truly is a diamond in our midst. With over 2000 years of history, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is just two and a half hours away and offers a wealth of amazing sights to behold.

GalleriesLyon’s Museum of Contemporary Art is a fantastically modern space designed by prize-winning architect Renzo Piano. You will never tire of visiting this inspiring space because the museum transforms itself for each artist’s exhibition offering a different experience with each new exhibit.

The Lumiere Institute celebrates Lyon’s incredible history as the birthplace of cinema. In 1895, the Lumiere brothers shot the film that is claimed as the first in the history of the cinema, ‘Sortie d’Usine’. Housed in the family’s villa, you can explore the brother’s inventions as well as the Institute’s daily showings of classic cinema.

Don’t MissLyon Festival of Lights is held over four days in December each year with the biggest spectacles happening on the 8th. According to tradition, the people of Lyon should burn candles in glass stands on their windowsills to express gratitude towards the Virgin

Mary. Even if religion isn’t your bag, the light shows across the city attract 4 million tourists each year and should definitely be experienced.

Every Sunday morning the most creative workers in Lyon come together at the Marché de la Création to exhibit their work. Painters, sculptors, poets, musicians, jewellers and just about everyone in the city’s artistic community form a creative forum and market.

Sébastien Bouillet's Chokola is a must-do for all chocoholics. The shop-come-laboratory is entirely dedicated to chocolate even featuring a wall of liquid chocolate on entry. This truly is a modern day Wonka factory.

Restaurants France’s third city is renowned for its gastronomy and as such there is a wealth of beautiful restaurants to be discovered. It’s a huge decision to pick just a good value and an expensive option for this city of food lovers but here they are:

It is difficult to argue with three Michelin stars, which is exactly what Paul Bocuse has been awarded for his magnificent restaurant. This top chef was awarded Chef of the Century by the Culinary Institute of America in 2011 - which certainly makes the several hundred euros it costs to eat there easier to swallow.

Brasserie Georges is an iconic Lyonnais restaurant set within a stunning art deco interior with a bustling atmosphere (capacity is 650 people). Some of the dishes may not be for the feint-hearted with offerings that include calf’s foot salad and honeycomb tripe but there is a massive range of choice for everyone. Main courses start at a little over €10 making it accessible to everyone.

Where to Stay…Luxury – Chateau de Bagnols is situated just outside of Lyon and is simply stunning. With a moat, drawbridge and four-poster beds, this hotel will make you feel like royalty. The luxurious French Renaissance style will set you back though, with a double room starting at around €500 a night.

Budget – For clean and modern budget accommodation you can’t beat Hotelo located in the centre of Lyon’s historical quarter. Double rooms start at just €72 a night and offer the simple, slick qualities that everyone is looking for in budget accommodation.

THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO

Legs quivering, palms sweating and a humungous drop to the ground…it’s not everyone’s idea of the perfect Sunday afternoon. But for many people rock climbing is a fantastic way to mix fitness with fresh air and toe curling excitement.

There are some fabulous opportunities for rock climbing in the local area with climbing options graded from three to eight. The French system for grading rock climbs starts at one (very easy) and ranges upwards indefinitely. Sometimes an additional letter; a,b,c may be added to sub-catagorise the grades as well as an optional + to further differentiate between difficulties.

Here’s our beginner’s guide to some top tips that should help you get up the mountain with a little more ease.

Don’t forget your legs – it is all too easy to imagine that rock climbing relies mostly on our arms and hands for strength to pull ourselves up the mountain but this is not the case. While your hands may hold you close to the rock face and help to guide you, it is in fact our legs that do most of the work. You should aim to focus twice the amount of energy on using your feet to push you up the rock than on your arms to guide you.

There are so many different types of foothold while rock climbing that it would be near impossible to

name them all, but the main two a beginner needs to be aware of are smearing and edging. Smearing involves placing the sole of your foot flat to the wall and can work well in the absence of footholds. Edging involves using the edge of your shoe around the ball of your foot to gain support. Make sure those shoes are tied up tightly!

While handholds are an important element in climbing, they are of less importance for a beginner rock climber. Initially they will only be necessary to balance yourself and ensure your stability on the rock face.

Try not to rush while you are climbing. It is a common problem for beginner climbers that their fear will cause them to rush along in order to finish climbing and get down from the heights quicker. This will only cause mistakes to be made and make the experience a lot scarier than it needs to be!

You can either choose classic rock climbing in the local area or the popular Via Ferrata which involves metal bars and cables to help guide you along some large rock faces for a beginner. For more information and guides to the area visit the Tourism Office.

Please remember that rock climbing can be a dangerous sport and should not be attempted without expert guidance and all of the necessary safety precautions.

It’s a funny thing, pulling on the lycra and setting out with my housemates for the first road ride of the season. We’re not in a hurry but something inside sets the body ready for a race. It is a very personal challenge and there is nowhere to hide.

We ride off out of Morzine chatting merrily, with the gentle early summer sunshine on our backs. We are worlds apart from the professional race circuit with all its fanfare, tv helicopters and cheering crowds. Yet one cannot fail to acknowledge a mysterious kinship with the heroes of history that have climbed, shoulder to shoulder, along this very stretch of road.

The route is a good challenge for early season and not too long. Ascending Route d’Avoriaz we cannot

get stranded in a far-flung valley and the descent of Col de la Joux Verte through Les Lindarets down to Lac Montriond is spectacular. I’m riding one of our new Boardman hire bikes with an 11/32 cassette, an exceptionally low gear ratio which is ideal for getting up these big Alpine climbs… especially after too many Mutzigs during the winter.

As the gradient begins to rise, my senses sharpen and pulse quickens, my breathing becomes heavy and focused. I know that no matter how hard it gets, there is no turning back now. The top is the only option. I am in my own world. This is my pace, my race, and that is all there is.

Nineteen hairpins and over an hour later, the road sign marking the end of the pain appears as a lucid mirage over the curved horizon. Spurred

on by the broadening panorama I make a final little push and then I stop. Exhausted. Exhilarated. Unequivocally human.

If the ascent is about fitness and raw determination, then the descent is about big hairy balls… it’s a runaway roller coaster with no rails and zero margin for error. On the drop handlebars the resistance is nothing and gravity fires me like a bullet down the tarmac oblivion. My breathing slows to a meditative pace as the bike senses every tiny bump. I tingle.

Squeezing the hyper-sensitive brakes into the first corner, careful to avoid any blemishes and white lines painted on the road, the bike holds through the turn and eases gingerly into the next straight. With far from perfect technique, each corner and every straight is a tight-rope balance between fear and control. Not to mention the car that appears out of nowhere round a blind hairpin up towards me.

By the end I am cruising, pedalling slowly. The air is warmer down here, and I experience a bizarre sense of re-entering a familiar yet foreign civilization. I feel different. I catch a sideways smile from my housemate Chris and I know that he feels it too. Thank you, mountains, for reminding me that I am alive.

If you’re lucky, you will have seen Alex Rajkowski perform in the local bars; now it’s time to learn a little more about the man himself.

What are your musical roots?

My roots in music started from an early age when I first learnt guitar and piano. I listened to a variety of music from the Beatles to Manic Street Preachers. Music has always been in my life in one way or another.

How did you first get involved in music?

I first got involved in music by playing the drums with a band at school and we grew from strength to strength. The band played round Birmingham and London and eventually got a slot on Radio 1 with John Peel (RIP). We went to Maida Vale studios in London and recorded a John Peel Session in the Bing Crosby studio. I can still remember the excitement of tuning into Radio 1 and hearing our tunes being played. From this we recorded an EP with EMI and Fierce Panda Records. Unfortunately, the band went its separate ways. The lead singer of this band was Fyfe Dangerfield who is now the lead singer in The Guillemots. When the band finished I still played a bit with Fyfe and his new band and ended up going to Top of The Pops where they performed their first single.

What made you make the move to Morzine?

I moved to Morzine for the skiing. I worked for my first season at Off Piste Madness as a chalet host and from there I decided this is where I wanted to live. I love the mountains and the community it has here, I find it inspirational.

How would you describe your music?

The music I play around resort is just covers of old and new popular songs. There is something

for everyone in the set which they can sing along and dance to. I play songs by Sam Sparro, Coldplay, Jason Mraz and many more. As for my own stuff, I am currently writing some songs that are acoustic but I have never been very good at lyrics so it’s taking some time. Hopefully by the end of June I will have a song complete with a video.

Who are your musical influences?

My influences are varied but I would say Jason Mraz, Pink Floyd, Michael Buble and Ed Sheeran. I am also a fan of anyone who plays live at our Open Mic event at the Rhodos (there is a lot of talent in Morzine).

How long have you been performing in Morzine?

I have been performing in Morzine and the surrounding areas for a couple of years now. It all started with a gig at L'Avalanche Bar in La Grande Terche where I did my FIRST ever live performance as a singer and guitar player. From here I got more and more gigs and met another guitarist called Rich who teamed up with me for gigs in Morzine where he took lead guitar. Unfortunately, Rich moved on and I was on my own again but not for long. I met a girl called Sara who sings and plays guitar, she joined me for some gigs and we have carried on from there. For this winter I should have a full band with drums, bass and saxophone.

Do you have a gig that is particularly memorable to you?

I guess most gigs are memorable to me but the best involve a good crowd who get involved in the moment. I will never forget going to Top of The Pops and performing at Maida Vale Studios.

Where would you most like to perform and why?

I would like to perform at some of the summer music festivals in the area as these are great outdoor events where people are there for the music and atmosphere. Geneva Arena would be good..ha!

If you could create a dream band with musicians, alive and dead, who would it consist of?

Hmmm.... the lead singer would be Jason Mraz, the guitarist - Eric Clapton, on the piano - Fyfe Dangerfield, the drummer would be me and I’d have Bill Black on the bass.

What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t a musician?Errm good question...Honest answer I don’t really know!

What does the future hold for Alex Rajkowski?

I am going to keep on gigging round the area and will eventually have a music studio set up for me and other people to record songs.

I would just like to say a big thank you to all that have been attending my gigs and also a BIG thanks to Richie - without him I would not be able to gig. Also a thank you to Sara for her hard work at the gigs and just one last thank you to my girlfriend Cat Calvert who has been supporting me in my musical adventure.

You can keep up to date with what’s happening with me at http://alexraj.webs.com and in Yodel!

Any film fronted by Morgan Freeman and Virginia Madsen is bound to make people sit up and take notice but with that comes great expectation. Despite the assumptions that go alongside this legendary actor’s name appearing in the credits, this is not your average Morgan Freeman film.

The most interesting aspect of Freeman’s character is that he has veered away from his usual typecast as the wise and soulful advocate for all that is moral in the world. Instead, he plays a bitterly sarcastic, wheelchair-bound, alcoholic writer who has been left disappointed with the hand life has dealt him.

While darkness does prevail throughout the film in the shape of Freeman’s downtrodden writer, The Magic of Belle Isle is also an uplifting story that chronicles one writer’s journey to re-discover the passion he had for creativity before the disappointment of life got in his way.

The yodel verdict: Well worth a trip to the cinema.

The crux of this book has to be that all you need to enjoy cycling is a bike. While it may be easy to get caught up in the various gadgetry of riding, essentially it involves one man and two wheels.

The book not only outlines the course of six magnificent riding routes across rural France but also chronicles Ruck’s anecdotes along the way. This is not simply a road race but a chance to sample local wines, delicacies and traditions along the way.

The book is also permeated with useful tips and tricks to help you keep your bike in one piece and tips on getting around certain areas and the best stopover points of each journey.

This book is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy their ride rather than just clock the most kilometres. If cycling isn’t necessarily your thing then the book also acts as a witty and informative guide to your travels.
