The Great Journey was the theme of Kappa Delta national convention 2011, and what a GREAT journey the Delta Gamma chapter has been on this year!

The spring semester started with a new young and fresh council to lead the Delta Gamma Chapter. Previous VP PR Caitlin Pike was elected as President; Allison Bruno VP-Member Education; Alex Paris VP-Membership; Amber Plunkett VPO; Erica Sturgill VP Community Service; Lauren Woods VP-PR; Claudia Floore VP-Standards; Jan Classen Treasurer; and Christy Culbreth Secretary.

The semester started on a high note when the chapter learned they had been ranked 2nd in grades, proof of the chapters hard work and dedication to academics during the fall semester. The chapter placed second again at the end of the Spring 2011 semester placing behind 1st by eight tenths of a point! The chapter is looking forward to working for that top spot during the fall 2011 semester!

March was filled with step, spring sing, tug practices and

National Convention. Greek Week. Shamrock Shootout.

Academic Excellence. Chapter Development Consultants.

Chapter Achievement Awards

Shamrock Shootout along with a visit from Chapter Development Consultant, Abbey Hall.

The CDC visit was a whirlwind trip for our visiting sister, only being in town for just around 24 hours! With the focus of the visit on recruitment preparation, the CDC was able to meet with all of council, members of CAB, recruitment day-heads, various appointed officers, she had the opportunity to see our step team practice and she finished the trip with a workshop with the entire chapter. The feedback from CDC Abbey Hall was great and motivated the chapter for all the recruitment changes fall recruitment will bring.

The chapter had no time to rest as the weekend brought on the chapter’s 9th annual Shamrock Shootout and the Unity Step show.

Shamrock Shootout was moved to Preston Center in the center of campus this year, causing the chairs of the event to make some adjustments from years before. Improvements to the pre-event fundraising and the new event location proved to be beneficial when

the chapter raised over $20,000 during the 2011 event!

This jump in fundraising made possible the largest donation from the Delta Gamma Chapter to the Family Enrichment Center during its partnership in Shamrock projects.

March also brought the great news of former chapter president

Lindsey

Houchin’s selection as a Chapter Development Consultant. Lindsey will travel from September through March on behalf of National Kappa Delta assisting chapters across the nation. Be sure to send congratulations her way, we are very proud to have such great representation on the national level!

As March ended and April grew closer the chapter prepared for

Greek Week. This year’s theme was “WKU

Greeks, Never Board Always Game,” having events based off of childhood board games. The week started Sunday with Spring Sing and the KD’s kicked off the event with the first Sorority performance. The chapters Patriotic theme of Battleship was an energizing number filled with costume changes and

animated backdrops. The crowd favorite was when the performers did a unity push-up to the theme music of survivor by Destiny’s Child.

The week was full of fun events and concluded the following Sunday at the annual Greek Convocation. The chapter had a fun afternoon and pizza dinner before heading to the awards ceremony, proving to be a fun ending of a week full of sisterhood. The Results are . . .

GREEK WEEK 2011

1st place: Philanthropy Day, Greek Feud, Events Day and Tug 2nd place: Blood Drive and Spring Sing

Chapter Achievement Awards: Alumni Development, Chapter Development, Greek Involvement, Intramurals, Philanthropic Service, Scholastic Achievement (Most of any sorority this year) During convocation it was also announced that three members were being inducted into the Greek Hall of Fame! (Rachael Feldman, Hunter Stevens and Caitlin Pike).

Even during such a busy semester chapter members still found time to hold high social success. The spring semester brought lots of new and old themesd mixers to the table. We saw athletes and matheletes with the men of Lamda Chi Alpha and Sigma Nu; The real housewives of Kappa Delta with the men of Pi Kappa Alpha;

High school cliques with Kappa Alpha and Alpha

Tau Omega;

and an Italian Wedding with the men of Sigma Chi. The chapter also hosted its annual theme dance in

February. This years theme was “Pick a Date,” where chapter members picked any date on the calendar year to be. We had Valentines Day, career day, 4th of July, grandparents’ day; we even had the opening day of hunting season! The semester concluded with our annual spring semi-formal, senior sendoff, honoring our graduating seniors one last time. The following chapter meeting our seniors took part in a special ceremony graduating them on to the bigger circle of Kappa Delta Alumnae. As the collegians prepare for the next chapter in our Great Journey we want to remind our Alumnae to follow our the chapters progress and events via twitter @WKUKD and Facebook. There are two groups – one for current chapter updates, and another Delta Gamma Chapter Alumnae. Chapter members LOVE getting feedback from our Alumni so “like,” “Share “and Tweet at us!

First let me start out by saying what an honor it is to serve as President of a chapter with such history of success and sisterhood. Not only at a local level but also on the national level.

I am thrilled at the year our chapter has had: improving in grades, making huge strides in our philanthropy events, and continuing excellent social success. As said by many of our members, “It was one of the BEST years ever!”

Winning homecoming, sweeping Greek Week 2011 and the chapter achievement awards, raising over $20,000 during our Shamrock event (just to name a few highlights) proved yet again that our chapter is continuing to strive each day for that which is Honorable, Beautiful and Highest.

This was highlighted at the National convention this summer in Tucson, Arizona with our many awards defining our chapter’s strong national presence.

It was such an honor to represent not only our current chapter, but as well all the amazing alumnae who have come before me. The highlight of the convention for me personally was celebrating the retirement of chapter sister Kim Flood Ryan, National Vice President of Membership, from national council, and having the honor of announcing the Kim Flood Ryan Spirit Scholarship.

The scholarship, which will be endowed through the Kappa Delta Foundation, will be given to a collegian from a chapter in the Commonwealth of Kentucky each year. To contribute to this

scholarship you can contact chapter Treasurer Jan Classen or myself.

I do hope you enjoyed the Nautilus News and I hope to see many of you at Homecoming this year! Go TOPS!
