From the Desk of

President

Entrepreneurship is not just about bringing the factors of production to its productive use, it rather calls for creating magic with those resources. Innovation is the key and that is where we have been focusing since our very inception. It calls for an amalgamation of the body, mind and soul. It involves strengthening our limits beyond physical and mental endurance.

Without innovation, business is silent, missions dumb, operations crippled, management and technology at a stand still.

Last year was spent on creating new products, exploring new markets and new partnerships between our collaborators and us. The unison aimed at expanding to new horizons and never before arenas of experience. To substantiate we acquired several JV’s and partnerships in our kitty.

Now is the time to ponder and create sustainable missions and objectives to fuel growth and leadership. It is time to upgrade standards in operations, facilitate a stronger workforce within, ensure impeccable management procedures and reach to a height never scaled before.

CG has been prioritizing its employee relations in providing the necessary development in skills and attitude. Employees are considered an asset in the organization. We need to look at ourselves and bring out our entrepreneurial abilities into excellence. We need to act with versatility embarking on creativity and newness. Therefore, we can proudly say – together we will bring about a difference into our worlds.

Best of luck….

Managing Director’s Message to CG Team

3

New years are one more chapters of our life, business and activities. It is a time to think and explore what more could be new this New Year! It is a time to reflect and plan how the newness could be directed to more hallmarks of successes.

We have thus continued to maintain satisfactory performance in achieving physical and financial targets by optimizing operations and business systems as well as in expanding and planning new ventures based on our core competencies and aspirations. We now have a mandate from President that coming few years should be invested on stabilizing the inorganic growth and focusing on businesses on incubation and I am sure this will help us strengthen our competency base.

Having said all above and thanking all stakeholders for their appreciable hard work, I would like to highlight some areas of improvement, which will make our business sustainable.

a Human Resources Management: All HODs should treat themselves as HR managers and ensure proper people management looking after their growth, motivation, and morale. We should empower people to take decisions for their processes at all levels. We need to be more participatory while taking decisions. We also need to have a proper judgment and visible differentiation for performers and non-performers.

b System Development/International Best Practices: We need to set up formal and scientific quality rating systems and ensure a good customer feedback system so that we know where we are in their eyes. We should make all our decisions facts based and hence research should be strengthened in all units- notional management will help, but not always. We also should try to innovate as well invite global best practices, esp. in manufacturing.

The points mentioned thus will now be part of performance evaluation for its reinforcement.

2010 is going be a year we should use and promote more use of green and

sustainable energy and in line with

our pledge become Nepal’s First Green

Company.

I am sure we will have more achievements to mention next year. I have confidence in the outstanding level of competence of our people. I would also like to specially recognize a few leaders who have turned-around businesses and contributed their passionate efforts for remarkable project performance. I have had many opportunities to hear our customers and stakeholders speak highly about CG’s people,

presence, speed and efficiency, active partnerships and result orientation. However, let us not rest on our past laurels and realize that in sustainability lies strength. Let us set new benchmarks for business and ourselves so that the hangover of success does not shadow our appetite for new achievements.

This is going be a year when we should use and promote more use of

green and sustainable energy and in line with our pledge become Nepal’s First Green Company.

With these words, I once again thank you for the valued contributions you made this year in spearheading our objectives for world class operations as well as in fulfilling the appetite for speedy-monstrous growth and tender you my BEST WISHES!

Campaign Ambassador – Climate for life Campaign“Climate change stands as the biggest challenge to sustained business growth in the world, and more so in a Himalayan country like Nepal. The need of the hour is to come together and find ways to convert this challenge into an opportunity. We need to do something. And the time to act is Now!”

In recent years, there have been economic fluctuations, dramatic environmental changes and shifts in population dynamics. Our traditional methods of adaptation are quickly losing their efficacy. The impact of global warming, pollution and the loss of biodiversity exacerbates existing problems of poverty, underdevelopment and the degradation of nature.

With changing rain patterns and an expected increase in temperature, the unique plants that grow in fragile environments may die out and swell as the fauna that depends on them. This has serious implications for the livelihoods of the people who use them

Human activity, the burning of fossil fuels and the destruction of forests have contributed to the situation we find ourselves in today. It cannot be business as usual in business. Which is why even industries in Nepal have

to change and build a long-term sustainability strategy.

Climate change may result in adverse business outcomes, including business interruption, increased investment or insurance costs, or declining financial measures such as value, return, and growth, or other measures of business success. How businesses adapt to these changes and how flexible they are will determine how well they cope with climate variability in the future.

“ It all started with a few simple meetings with WWF. At a point where I did not have in-depth knowledge about Climate Change issues and how exactly it would affect on the industrial sector but also the lives of each of my countrymen. With this beginning, I got involved more and more with the concept of corporate sustainability and how Business and industries need to incorporate sustainable business practices into their core work. Chaudhary Group has always traditionally been a big supporter of giving back to the society and making changes happen at the grassroots level being involved in 50 CSR programs currently. Climate change is such an issue which has global to local impacts. It will affect every one of us regardless of geography, caste, creed, profession.

As I learned more about how global warming will affect Nepal and other countries that depend on the Himalayan for water recourses, it hit me more and more, why I should be involved in raising my voice about this cause.

I, as concerned businessperson should be talking about these issues. I, as a young Nepali citizen should be talking about this issues. Thereafter I committed myself that I would do everything, as an individual as well as through my company, to support Campaigns like climate for Life, which is bringing the Himalayan people together to raise one voice for the cause.”

Someone once said that whatever made you successful in the past may not in the future. Sustainability is not just being alive today, it is also being alive tomorrow. Climate change represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet, and we in Nepal are among the most vulnerable although we are probably the least responsible.

But as a young Nepali businessman I am worried we may not be doing enough ourselves to avert the impact of Climate change. To address climate change we first have to change the way we do things.

JV with Carbon Conservation – Help Carbon Conservation save the Rainforest from Burning

CG has recently inked an MOU with the Carbon Conservation to establish and utilise Carbon resources for various environmental activities. The JV attempts to address serious environmental issues and improve the climatic conditions in our country.

The Business of the Company shall be as follows:

Survey, investigate, design and develop carbon projects and other environmental opportunities within CG’s operations (Projects) including but not limited to its operations and projects in renewable energy, energy efficiency and other non forest sources in its related entities in food and beverage, snacks, consumer durables, manufacturing, real estate development, financial services, healthcare, automobiles and motorbikes, infrastructure, apparel & accessories,

tobacco, packaging, trading, phyto chemicals and education.

The Company will initiate activities to secure a Mandate Agreement from the Government of Nepal to create a Green Nepal Vision and a Carbon Nepal National Partnership Program (CN-NPP). This Mandate Agreement will then be developed into a business that would position the Company as a partner of the national Government of Nepal for creating and operating carbon infrastructure; building capacity and participating in carbon markets.

DTHCG plans to enter the DTH market to exploit bottlenecks as its strategic and success factors. In this market, content and transponder capacity are scarce and controlled by few players.

The proposed station pursues the policy of quality and standardizes services to customers.

It would not only stick one stereo-type program but will try to catch mass of the people with information they tend to seek. Job opportunities, career development opportunities, and promotional program for newsprint artist will be tenacious element of

the planning. Additionally, the policy of research and development on related areas shall encourage the effectiveness and new program development for furthers transmission with economy and greater efficiency. The most important asset is arguably an ability to play a unique role in the DTH value chain. This advantage may reside in businesses that have little or no obvious connection with DTH. A company that has pioneered a business offering credit for consumer durables in a developing country, for instance, might be well placed to supply finance to purchasers of CPE.

With content, access to unique local language material is critical. In a market

like Nepal, DTH player may need to do is repackage existing channels that are not universally available. In sports, players have an advantage through long-term rights purchases. Broadcasting rights to cricket in India, for example, belongs to ESPN for the next five years. It also controls the right to football for West Bengal (the most popular league) for ten years.

The second obvious bottleneck is in transponder capacity. A modest DTH offering is likely to require a minimum of 10 to 15 transponders-almost a dedicated satellite. The number of satellite that can broadcast to a particular region is limited by physics.

Token of appreciation to employees

With the aim of improving productivity and efficiency, the company has formed a policy of rewarding deserving employees and recognizing significant contribution made by them towards the overall efficiency of the organization and business. The above move would not only increase productivity but also help bring about a sense of ownership and self-belongingness, feels the management. A panel of judges takes the final decision with respect to nominations based on certain critical factors.

Rewarding excellence is a mandatory move by the management, who feels that such a move would go a long way in increasing a sense of competitiveness and challenging the self .It acts a as a huge motivating factor that will improve effectiveness in work.

Competition is not about outwitting others but the self. One’s biggest competition is none other than his own self. Taking challenges and attempting to beat the self is the biggest road to success. CG Finco

It all began in the year 2003 when our present Managing Director- CG, Mr. Nirvana Chaudhary started the business with a small team of four members. Acting as the COO for CG Finco, Mr. Nirvana understood that the journey was long and we had just taken the first step walking the road that few had dared to take then.

There was a mirage of opportunity with huge number of Nepalese in foreign employment, which was continuously growing. Back then, the remittance business in Nepal was at its infancy in the organized sector as most of the money transferred to Nepal came through unorganized sectors like Hundi and other non-legal measures. The scenario is however different today as the magnitude of remittance has really skyrocketed.

There was huge ignorance and lack of required requisite in the market regarding the remittance business and making agents was tedious. CG Finco was instrumental in educating the concerned individual/ institution on process methodology that propelled remittance industry to its present stature.

CG Finco collaborated with Western Union Money Transfer Inc, which was a quantum leap marking its first entry into the inward remittance business.

Working on the philosophy of “creating value both for customer and the nation”, CG Finco today has more than 700 agent partners all over Nepal transacting up to 14,000 transactions a month as of today. ”The road was however not as easy as it looks” says Mr. Santosh Subedi, “We started in the year 2003 with a small team of four members. There was no proper office to resume operations too. We got a small space at the Khichapokhari office to resume operations. The task was huge and the overall functions of operations, accounts and marketing had to be handled by a particular member of the team all by himself. Making agents were a big challenge too” added Mr. Subedi.

Western Union awarded CG Finco as the fastest growing network agent in Nepal. It has also received a Regional star award. It is also a member of the Top Agents Club 500 of Western Union Global Network. Today it has successful Banking Partnerships with leading banks like the Rashtriya Banijya Bank, Standard chartered Bank Nepal Ltd, Kumari bank Ltd, Nepal Bangladesh Bank Ltd. and the Citizens’ Bank International Ltd etc.

CG Finco has pioneered the identification, quantification and study of how remittances work. It is therefore

uniquely positioned to promote partnerships at a micro level to tap the potential of remittance for lending to micro enterprises and small businesses, long-term financing for housing and investment in education, health and social security.

CG Finco has outshined all the existing players to be the numero uno and will continue to invest in ways to leverage remittance to create tangible advantages for our country and its inhabitants. It will always remain a staunch ally in promoting remittance as a development tool and a bridge to a bright future for people.

Remittance is overall beneficial to developing countries as funds sent to native countries contribute to the welfare and improved livelihood of families receiving them. On the broader macroeconomic plane, remittance has helped Nepal to cope with economic crisis which has improved their credit worthiness.

This rapid growth in remittance in recent years has forced marketers and policy makers to study and analyze this phenomenon. As remittance is not a monopolistic market, players and stakeholders are incessantly increasing, making the battle more fierce.

However, remittance industry is not hazard free in a situation where government depends solely on large flows of remittance to shoulder its economic responsibilities. This can discourage planning and implementation of aggressive economic policies to promote sustained development.

A STORY TO RECKON- Boon to the remittance industry
