Letter from St Swithun's Church

Do you enjoy the feeling of crossingthrough items on a ‘jobs-to-do l ist’ asfinished?

Seemingly, a large percentage of usroutinely produce a running l ist of ‘jobsto do’. Each completed task beingmarked with a satisfying tick, giving acontented glow to all concerned!

The arrival of our new vicar JaneBurgess and her husband Charles inJuly wil l mark for us (as Churchwardens)the completion of a jobs-to-do l ist thathas lasted over a year! But in truth, whilst the process of finding andappointing a new partner to lead thework of your vil lage church in Bathfordwil l be complete, the story for Jane andher role at St. Swithuns is just beginning. And it’s a beginning we would love youto be involved in.

Even for the early churches dottedaround the Mediterranean 2000 yearsago, there wil l have been 1 01 reasonswhy people no longer went to church. Somuch so that Saint Paul wrote:

Do not give up meeting together, assome are in the habit of doing butencourage and be encouraged. ...For us too, there can be thousands ofreasons why church has lost its appeal.Perhaps we have been hurt or offended, perhaps life has become too busy or attimes the ‘churchieness of church’seems irrelevant in our modern age, butas we get to know Jane and Charles andprepare ourselves for the nextinstalment in the l ife of the church andthe vil lage, why not put ‘try church’ onyour l ist of things to do?. . . .

With very best wishes,

Derek Brown and Joy Craine

The Open Daywil l take place on Friday 1 0thSeptember. This is the earl iest date thatwe could offer as the building is not duefor completion unti l 23rd July, which is

the last day of the Summer Term!Guided tours by our Year 6 pupils wil ltake place through the morning of 1 0September every 30 minutes, starting at9.1 5am The last tour wil l be at 11 .1 5amThe actual ceremony wil l take place at2.30pm with various dignitaries beingpresent. Governors hope that as manyof you as possible wil l attend. The onlyproviso we would say is please wearappropriate foot wear that wil l not markour lovely wooden floor.

Governors would l ike to take thisopportunity to share with the vil lage theirplans for the community use of thismarvellous new facil ity. Governors areaware of the interest that exists and theneed. Indeed, I am sure that many ofyou wil l remember the efforts in the pastto have a community facil ity built on theschool site to be shared by both schooland vil lage. At last, through lobbying andfund raising, we have managed, overthe years, to manoeuvre BathfordSchool into the position whereby theschool replaced classrooms, with theLEA, via central government capitolworks funding, bui lding the Hall . TheGoverning Body have much to sort outabout lettings and have set up a workingparty to thoroughly explore the issues. This wil l take some time and they do notenvisage that the school wil l be in aposition to let that Hall unti l well into2011 . Our first priority is to manage andwork the building for our children. Sobear with us. We wil l get there andBathford wil l have the use of a beautifulfaci l ity managed in a safe andprofessional way to the advantage of al l .

We hope to see as many of you aspossible on Friday 1 0th September.

Untidy area of land in Dovers Park

Concerns have been expressed byresidents for a long time about theappearance of the patch of land by thebus stop in Dovers Park opposite theschool. After several approaches toB&NES the Parish Council wasconfident that steps were being taken tocompel the landowner to tidy the site.Unfortunately, B&NES havereconsidered the matter and a copy oftheir final response to the ParishCouncil ’s prolonged efforts to get theland cleared is as fol lows:-

Dear Bathford PCI email with regards to your complaint inrelation to untidy land behind the busstop in Dovers Park, Bathford. I havetaken over the case following theprevious case officer leaving theAuthority. I have visited the site andphotographed the area in question. Ithen took the case to a legal meetingearlier this month to decide what actionif any is required. It has been decided byAuthority solicitors and the EnforcementTeam that the land in question does notwarrant a section 215 notice as the landis not considered to be in such acondition which affects local amenity. The case will be closed with no furtheraction required at this time.ThanksPlanning EnforcementBath & North East Somerset CouncilThe Parish Council is deeplydisappointed that its efforts to improvethis area have not been supported byB&NES.
