This is the first column from your new President! I would like to welcome Forrest Jackson and Ernie Bucio to the MDJS Executive Board, and also like to thank Drew Mercer and Deck Hogin for all the time and energy they have given the Board since long before I even became a member. Since being elected, I have pondered many ideas and listened to many suggestions a b o u t h o w t o i m p r o v e attendance and participation in MDJS. Board Members are working together, gathering our thoughts for a common cause. We want to bring our club up to date, while still enjoying a rich history of a style of music that began in the 19th century. We want to build on our past, by using our strengths. We know for certain that when people have an understanding of something, they can reach a greater degree of caring, they can become stewards, they can help

fight for us. I would like to see volunteers step forward to help in small ways, knowing that you do not h a v e t o ma k e a l a r g e commitment. Just showing up at the monthly club meeting is a start. Some ways to lend a hand might include: • sit at the front table for a set, to relieve a board member • help with the raffle table … sell raffle tickets...contribute a prize • help set up/ tear down equipment • put an ad in the Jazzette • bring a friend or a youngster to the club meeting • thank the bar tender and cooks for their fine work • offer suggestions and encouragement to Board Members

• bring a horn to a jam set, applaud the musicians • encourage young (and old) musi-cians to give Dixieland a try • share your hidden talents Let us continue to look forward and build on our past. Let your friends and acquaintances know the good things about our club. Share your interests in Dixieland jazz. Dance up a storm! See you all at the July meeting!

First of all I wish to congratulate and thank all of the newly elected members of the MDJS Board. We have quite a bit of work ahead of us, but I am excited at the possibilities that your new blood on the board offers. For those of you who did not run for office, please consider getting involved with our Society. We could use some help. Volunteers at the door, help set up equipment, there are a lot of opportunities to help out which won’t take much of your time. Last month I was soliciting funds to send Michael Channing to the

jazz camp at Mammoth Lakes. Thanks to all of you who donated. I collected $190 for Michael. The Jazz Society in Stockton voted to donate $200 from its treasury to support Michael. So with the combined donations Michael’s parents were able to make up the difference to send Michael. I received two letters of thanks. One from Michael and one from Jayne Nishimori, mother of Rik Nishimori, trumpet player for Barkin’ Dawg Jazz Band. A HUGE thank you is owed to Bob Sakoi who played all

afternoon last month. He generously offered to fill in on the jam sets as well as playing with Jazz City. Chops of Steel!! Speaking of the jam sets, I enjoyed Bill Sharp’s rendition of “Just Because”. Maybe we might need to add a bit of C & W music to our line up? I hope to see a lot of you at our July meeting to listen and dance to the sounds of Fulton Street Jazz Band. Get out those dancing shoes and come on down to the Moose!

A Lagniappe From Lady Reed

Editor: Margaret Squires brought to the club’s attention the plight of Michael Channing. He is the young man from Lodi who desperately wanted to go to Mammoth Lakes Jazz Camp but did not have the funds to do so. Our generous donations have made Michael’s dream a reality. Here is his Thank You letter and also a letter from Jayne Nishimori. To Modesto Jazz Society, I would like to thank you and express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for everything you have done for me. I cannot thank you enough for your generous donation. It means the world to me. I would also like to thank all of the members of the society that donated money to help with my

tuition. If it wasn’t for your generosity, I would not be able to attend the Mammoth jazz camp. I would also like to add a special thank you to Margaret Squires for organizing the campaign. I cannot express my appreciation for everything you have done for me. So again I would like to thank all of you for your help and I am really looking forward to camp.

Sincerely,

Michael Channing

To The Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society, I would like to thank the members of the Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society for their generous donations for Michael Channing. Your help has made it possible

for Michael to attend the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee Youth Jazz Camp. He will be a senior this coming year at Lodi High School, where he plays his trombone in the wind ensemble and jazz band. He is very excited about being able to attend camp, and will benefit from the experience and encouragement. I, especially, would like to thank Margaret Squires for coordinating Michael’s find raising campaign with the Modesto Jazz Society. She has always been instrumental in helping our young musicians. And sending Michael is a prime example.

Thank you,

Jayne Nishimori Mother of Rik Nishimori,

Trumpet / Leader of the Barkin’ Dawg Jazz Band
