FROM YOUR POST COMMANDER
Hi everyone, Here we are at the beginning of a
new year 2020. When I was elected to be the Commander last year, my main project was to concentrate on the membership. To renew the existing membership and recruit new members. I quickly learned that this is a never ending process, especially in this period of time for veteran service organizations such as the Amvets. It will take all of us to work together to accomplish this.
Here are some facts to consider. There are about 1100 or so Amvets Posts in the United States. Eighty-five percent of our membership is 65 years old and older. The average longevity of the veteran population is 72 years old. It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out and forecast the end of our organization.
So how do we maintain our current membership and recruit the new younger veterans? Post 49 has established a Long Range Planning Council that will take the membership issue as part of their agenda. Ivan Hankins posted a link on Post 49 Facebook page pertaining to this very subject. The title of the link is “Why are the younger veterans avoiding the veteran service organizations?” It is a post worth reading. The person comes up with 12 suggestions to help recruit new young veterans.
I was disappointed to see the negative comments made on the page. As Ivan put it, the Post 49 Facebook page is not to be used to air dirty laundry about Post 49 and its members. Although I can say some of these complaints are and have been addressed. This new year we all need to come together and make a POSITIVE QUALITY AMVETS POST.

AMVETS RIDERSI want to thank everyone that was
able to make it to the membership night for the Riders. The weather did not want to cooperate but we still had a good turn out and great time. For those that were not able to attend please make sure to get your dues turned into the Riders 1st Vice, Ron Kirkland.
Thank you everyone that helped put on the January steak night. Great food and great fellowship!
It is February now and winter is definitely upon us and the temperature is dropping so stay warm and safe.

LADIES AUxILIARYWell, here we are in February
already and Groundhog day. So will he see his shadow or not? But whether he sees his shadow or not we still have 6 weeks of winter. The month of December really spoiled us with the 50 degree weather.
On February 28th we have our White elephant Auction starting at 5 PM. So if you have something to donate please do, or come down and bid on your favorite package and be surprised at what you get. It all goes to a good cause for Scholarships.
On Thursday February 13th at 5 PM we have set up for a meeting for the recognition dinner. So if anyone would like to help us this year, please come and join us. Need everyone’s input. We do need a new catering service this year, as Buss’s catering that we have used in the past has retired. Jan and I will get some catering prices before this meeting.
March 1st from noon to 3 pm come down and have your family pictures taken. I know Michael and I are. We need an update on pictures and the proceeds benefit the project 22 Every Day. This is because 22 Veterans commit suicide every day. So let’s support this project.
Our next meeting is Monday, February 10th at 6 PM.

JUNIOR AMVETSHello Everyone!! I hope you all have
had a wonderful couple of months. The Juniors are winding up candy bar sales. We have donated $206.00 to Waterloo Honor Flight, $100.00 each to St Jude’s, John Tracey Clinic, House of Hope, Freedoms Foundation, Retrieving Freedom, VA’s Christmas For A Veteran, Kandie Vaughn’s Shower of Gifts, Natalie Cummings’ 22 Everyday fundraiser, and various amounts to different programs at North Cedar School.
The kids have been busy selling candy bars, raffle tickets, and food. They have been volunteering at the humane society.
In the coming months, due to poor turnout, we will not be having the kitchen open as often. We will be having a mini meat raffle, some 50/50 raffles, and raffling off some fun gift baskets every month for the next few months.
The most exciting thing on my mind is our new members!! We have 3 new members and there are a few more kids thinking about joining. We want to welcome Ashton Thompson, whose Mother Theresa is a new Auxiliary member, also Crystal Nicholson and Cody Nicholson!! Our Active membership has doubled! All three jumped right in and are selling candy bars and worked our last kitchen.
We could not do any of this without your support. It is very appreciated!! Thank you so much for coming down and supporting our projects.

C & C (NOT THE DRINK!)Have you noticed lately the annual
trend of Carping and Complaining going on? It happens about this time of the year when the seasons change.
Folks seem like they are actually elected to be a carper and complainer about everything in our Post. They complain about sidewalks not being shoveled when they walk on them, they complain about our employees not dedicating themselves to waiting on them individually, fast enough. They complain about Coffee cups not being washed.
C & C members with their continual negative comments don’t help us provide a nice place to come in and spend money.
C & C members are like a club of whiners and obviously get up on the wrong side of the bed everyday! They have a dark cloud over their head and never allow good things to break their negativity.
C & C members believe they know everything about all things!
They don’t care or worry about what they are spewing out of their mouths is factual, they just like to C & C!
C & C members from ALL groups make new members wonder why they joined such a group hell bent on bringing projects and other activities down. And you never see those new members again!
If the most important thing in your life is to come into the Post and find someone to C & C to … do all of us favor and leave your C & C at home! Just watch, when members of the C & C club read this. How many of them will C& C?
A positive approach to working together is always welcomed!

MILITARY RITES PARTICIPANTS FOR
JUNE/JULYYOUR HELP AT THE IVH IS NEEDED On the forth Wednesday of each month, with the exception of November and December, members of the Post go down to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, to help the residents with bingo. this is an AMVEt State Department sponsored activity. those who make the visitation may eat lunch in the cafeteria at the IVH, free. the food is tasty, and varied in offerings, and the quantity of food is generous. We meet at the Post about 1045 hours, and leave for Marshalltown by 1100 hours and return to the Post by 1630 hours. If you have the time and the inclination, this is a worthwhile way to volunteer your time. If you are interested but want more information, call Marv Mattfeld at 268-1280, or email [email protected].

JUNIOR AMVETS Our August meeting will be held at the Post at noon to ? on August 11th. We are having a family picnic and potluck. We are inviting everyone to come join us. All you do is bring a salad or dessert. the Juniors will provide and cook the hot dogs and hamburgers and the buns. there will be games for the kids also. We also would like to get some new members. So please everyone from the Post, Auxiliary, Sons and Riders you are all
invited and this is a great way for all of us get to know each other and work together. Also our Homeless Stand down clothing drive is August 17th from 10 AM to 2 PM, so it is time to clean out the closets and get rid of the clothes that are too small or too big. Remember the clothing drive is to help our homeless veterans and their families. the clothing goes to Des Moines on Friday September 6th. All clothing needed from children to adult clothing. they do need blankets, winter coats, hats, mittens, and scarfs. Please remember these people are homeless. You may drop off at the AMVEtS and put in the garage or you may call Rose Leuer, cell phone number 319-504-5218. thank you very much for all donations. Our donations for the month of July was $100.00 to help Diane Kline with North Cedar School for school supplies.
