15th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16, 2017 Isaiah 55:10-11 Ps 65:10-14 (with Luke 8:8) Romans 8:18-23 Matthew 13:1-23 The seed sown on rich soil This Sunday's readings are about sowing seeds. The important thing to remember about seed sowing is that the effort is worthless if the seeds are not changed by being cast to the ground. Each seed must give up its former self, dying in the dirt while new life stirs within it. Only then can it send out a tender, first root, which will multiply and grow stronger and deeper to support upward growth. Even so, it has to be properly nourished to survive. If all this takes place, the end result is a plant that looks nothing like the seed, which as it grows devel-ops the ever-more important mission of benefitting the wider world of Nature beyond itself. As we listen to Jesus explain the parable, we say yes, we want to be seeds that become fruitful lives. But desiring it does not automatically transform us. What is it that makes the soil of our lives rich and growth-producing? The reading from Isaiah tells us that it is God himself who is the rich soil -- God and his Word. Saint Paul reminds us in the second reading that suffering is part of creation (seeds must fall in the dirt and die in order to produce a fruitful life). Redemption grows from suffering and death. We will never feel truly fulfilled until we've surrendered to the soil and have allowed God to nourish our growth. Questions for Personal Reflection: What tender, new roots do you have that are sprouting from times of suffering and loss? What blessings are springing up from them? What ministry (what benefit to others) could be a fruitful gift of these blessings? Questions for Community Faith Sharing: Share what it means to give up your former self to allow new life to stir and grow. What is the will of God (what does the Word say) regarding the end result? Give examples from your life or from the lives of others. Fr. Edwin L. Sanchez 15to.

· Items can be brought to the office, or to the table

Padre Edwin L. Sanchez Romero

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Saint Mary Magdalen – July 22 “When Jesus gives Himself to us in this Sacrament, we possess Him as holy Simeon did when he held Him

as an infant in his arms, as Magdalen did when she caressed and kissed His feet, as John did when he reposed

on His Heart. Jesus has unweariedly followed us from the crib to Calvary, from Calvary to the Tabernacle,

from the Tabernacle to the hands of priests, from the hands of the priest to our heart.“ (Fr. Etlin’s, ‘The Holy

Eucharist’)

Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the

chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office

FRUIT OF THE WORD

The seed is the word of God. The agricultural met-aphors in all of today’s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfill-ment of God’s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not fu-tile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll wor-ried that Americans would not appreciate the linguis-tic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the re-gions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members.

Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word “Eucharist” comes from the Greek for “thanksgiving.” For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the coloni-al outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new litur-gical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Brit-ain. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. AMAR A ALGUIEN

Amar profundamente a alguien te hace fuerte.

Saying the Rosary

We recite the rosary in the chapel every morning before daily mass except on Wednesday when we do it after

mass. The rosary begins at 8:00 am and the daily mass at 8:30.

We also recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy after every daily mass. All are welcome.

Seeking a Leader for the Greeters

Are you good at coordinating people? We are in need of someone to take on the leadership of the Greeters.

This would be to coordinate when we have sign-ups to be greeters in the first place, lead training sessions,

be sure we have coverage for special events and the like. It would be across all Masses - not that the leader

has to be at all Masses, just that they are the go-to person for scheduling and such.

Please call Ace at the office - 541-926-1449. Thanks!
