CORAM, NY - Craig Ferrera put

together eleven in a row before

missing a pin to finish with a 299game while competing in the

    Wednesday Summer Mixed

    League at Coram Country Lanes.

    Bill Hennington also tallied

eleven strikes but just not in a rowand ended the evening with a 279

    game.

    By Bill Vint - PBA

LUBBOCK, Texas – Top qualifier EJ Tackett of Huntington, Ind.,

threw a string of seven consecutive

strikes to defeated Bill O’Neill of

    Langhorne, Pa., 256-213, to win

    the PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock

Sports Southwest Open and his first

PBA Tour title at South Plains

    Lanes.

    Tackett, PBA’s 2013 Rookie of

the Year, opened the title match

    with three single-pin spares, but

made a few adjustments and fol-

lowed with his string of seven

strikes to run away from O’Neill,

who is arguably the hottest player in professional

bowli ng this summer. O’Neill came into the

Lubbock event fresh off wins in the PBA 2015

Oklahoma Open and Oklahoma’s Grand Casino

Hotel & Resort King of the Swing, a multi-event

summer series in which he also had two third-place

    finishes.

Tackett, 22, had previously finished second in the

2014 USBC Masters and the 2014 Oklahoma Open.

Along with his first PBA Tour title, he won a

    $15,000 first prize.

“A lot of people took a chance on me when I first

came out on tour, so I want to thank all of them,”

Tackett said. “This one is for them.”

O’Neill advanced to the title match with a 267-

235 victory over 2014 PBA Southwest Region

Player of the Year Shawn Maldonado, a two-hand-

ed player from Houston, Texas. Maldonado was

trying for his first PBA Tour title. In the first match, Maldonado rallied from a 45-

pin deficit in the fifth frame, finishing with seven

    consecutive strikes – including a

cross-over strike on his first shot inthe 10th frame – to eliminate

    defending Lubbock Southwest

    Open champion Mitch Beasley of

     Nashville, Tenn.

    The Xtra Frame Lubbock

    Southwest Open, presented by

Storm, was the fourth PBA Tour

    event covered exclusively live on

     by PBA’s exclusive online video-

    streaming service. Earlier in the

year, Chris Barnes of Double Oak,

Texas, won the DHC PBA Japan

Invitational in Tokyo – the first

    international event ever streamed

live on Xtra Frame; Josh Blanchard of Phoenix,

Ariz., won the PBA Xtra Frame Maine Shootout at

Bayside Bowl in Portland, Maine, and Colombia’s

Andres Gomez won the PBA Xtra Frame Pensacola

South Open last Sunday at New Liberty Lanes in

    Pensacola, Fla.

Among the 59 players who qualified for the cash-

ers’ round was former Major League All-Star John

Burkett of Southlake, Texas. Burkett, a 50-year-old

first-year competitor on the PBA50 Tour, bowled

Saturday’s early nine-game qualifying squad. With

half of the field yet to bowl, Burkett was certain he

had missed the cut to Sunday’s cashers’ round, so

he headed back to Southlake – roughly 320 miles

away. At the end of the five-hour trip, he learned he

had, in fact, qualified in 58th place, so he turned

around and drove back to Lubbock. Bowling the

cashers’ round on three hours’ sleep, Burkett moved

up to 34th place after two games before fatigue setin and he fell to 51st.

    J o a n Ta y l o r ’ s . . . . .

    Te n P i n R a p . . . . .I can hardly believe that I am

sitting in the classroom of the

    15th annual Pro Image Bowling

Camp or as I fondly call it,

    “Bowling Boot Camp.” Yes, 15

    years ago Team USA Head

    Coach Fred Borden and another

Team USA coach from this area,

    Ken Yokobosky, conceptualized

the idea to hose a bowling camp,

accessible to people in the tri-

state area and held at Rockaway

    Lanes.

It was no small task to figure

out how many coaches would be

    needed, and what their avail-

ability would or would not be, in

    addition to asking Rockaway

Lanes owner Richard Mark as to

when he would be willing to

close the lanes for three full

days. And after all the careful

     planning, would there be

    enough interest?

    Well, this year’s figures prove

there was and still is an interestwith this year’s camp having

grown to an expanded class of

54 bowlers from age 12 through

63, with a waiting list of hope-

    fuls.

To find out the motivation for

so many campers and the return-

ing coaches, I asked a simple

    question: “Why are you here?”

    The results were:

    Jeri E. (coach):

    “Camaraderie.”

Roger S: “Because four of the

best coaches in the world are in

    one place at one time.”

Mia W. “I want to learn a lit-

    tle…no, a lot about ball

    motion.”

    Joey G. “I’m ready to be a

     better bowler.”

    Jennifer D. “To improve

     because you can’t stop improv-

    ing.”

    Sarah R. “No matter where

you are, there is always room

for improvement. A 12 year old

and a 63-year old are all here

    for the same thing.”

Nick W. “To learn something.”Ken Y (coach). “I get the

    chance to continue to coach

with the best coaches I’ve ever

worked with since I first started

    coaching (1986).”

    Gary McC. “To improve my

    game and learn something about

     bowling.”

Tom S. “To get better and for

    the camaraderie.”

Tami M. “To be coached by

the best coaches in the world.”

Bob R. “To improve my game

and because of who the coaches

    are.”

Noel V (coach) . “To help

    everybody be the best they

    can be.”

    Mason W. “Because I came

here last year and had dramatic

    improvement; this is my

    favorite place in the world.”

Jake N. “It sounded like fun

and my Dad said it would help

    (my game).”

Joe C. “To learn more about

the game and improve. All of

the people (coaches) are in one

place.” (Side note: Joe at tend-ed last year’s camp and fol-

    lowed it back home in

    Pennsylvania by entering a

    “beat the pro” tournament and

    winning 300-279).

    Deborah B. “Because I’m a

beginner bowler and I got frus-

    trated with everyone trying to

    help me.”

    John Y (coach). “This camp

gives me satisfaction to be a

good coach in helping people to

    get better.”

Mark P. “I always wanted to

be a good bowler. My son took

to it (bowling) and he’s getting

better so I have to get better,

    too. It’s a nice father-and-son

    thing.”

Tom G (coach) “To give back

to the sport I loved as a kid and

    adult.”

Shea B. “To improve my skills

and be a better bowler. I want to

be able to beat my Mom. She’s

    my inspiration.”

    James K. “Timing and overall

    improvement.”

Keith L. “There are no better

    coaches in the world. They

    make you feel wonderful.”

    Jeff M. “I bowled as a young-

ster and gave it up for 45 years.

I went back 5 years ago and

    want to do well now.”

    Julio C. “I haven’t been here

in 5 years and wanted to get

     better.”

Greg R. (coach). “I have funcoaching and I want to keep the

    sport of bowling going. There

    are enthusiastic people here.”

Lou G. “To execute my pas-

sion. It’s also a stress reliever.”

    Gordon V. (coach) “I look

forward to being with Fred, Jeri

and Ken. We had a great time

    coaching Team USA. This is

great for me because we have

    something special together.”

Pete P. “This (camp) is going

to change me into a 250 aver-

age bowler (laughs). I want to

    keep learning the game and

gaining knowledge.”As you see, the underlying

    theme was learning and improv-

ing, not to mention the respect

    for world-class coaching.

    This explains why this year’s

    “class” had 22 attending their

first camp (median age, 15). For

10 more, it was their second; six

    attended their third; three were

here for the fourth time; two

    enjoyed their fifth camp, and

    three have attended these camps

six or more times. Three of the

    coaches were former campers

    themselves.

    In addition to middle school,

    high school and collegiate

     bowlers, there were 3 medical

doctors, 1 attorney and a profes-

sional cellist (no, this is not the

    introduction to a bad joke).

    They came from New York,

     New Jersey, Pennsylvania and

as far south as Delaware and

    Maryland.

    So who were these amazing

    coaches? Ohio-based Fred

Borden, the pros’ coach who has

    written numerous books and

    generated programs such as

    “mybowlingcoach.com” and

    video lessons. Gordon Vadakin,

    head bowling coach at Wichita

    State, many of whose graduates

are enjoying success on the pro-

    fessional bowlers’ tour. His

teams have also won numerousnational championships. Jeri

    Edwards, the only female coach

in the world for a national sports

    team, formerly with Team USA

    and currently coaching Team

    Puerto Rico. Yokobosky, who

runs 2 pro shops, and is the head

    coach in the newly-formed

    Caldwell College women’s

     bowling program. Al Jones, who

also runs the 2 pro shops and is

    our wunderkind who has

    received two sets of double-lung

    transplants. Rounding out the

    staff are Tom and Eric

Gentilella, John Yankanich and Noel Vega.

Next week, in Part Two you

    will see how these campers

fared, and who won the grand

finale tournament. I can tell you

that on the last day, Ken

Yokobosky already had a list of

     people enrolled for next year’s

    “Sweet sixteenth” Bowling

    Boot Camp.
