Good News Reflection 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2018

Amos 7:12-15 Ps 85:9-14 Ephesians1:3-14 Mark 6:7-13

Go forth in bold confidence! In this Sunday's Gospel passage, Jesus teaches us about trust. If we're to fulfill our calling as God's missionar-ies of love in this world, if we're to fulfill our calling to share the Good News, we must trust God and the resources that he provides.

And we must trust that he will always provide exactly what we need when we need it, even though it doesn't always seem sufficient. It's important that we don't feed the inclination to distrust him by expecting anything other than what he provides.

Every Mass ends with a re-commissioning rite for the calling we all have. The final blessing is a sending forth after we've been renewed in our relationship with Jesus. His presence in the Word and in the Eucharist and in the Church community re-energizes us (when we pay attention) to boldly go and do all that he asks of us.

Through the priest, Jesus sends us into the world to be the visible proof that he is real and that he's alive and that he cares. With Jesus, and in him and through him, we are all evangelizers who can make a difference in the world.

Yes, all of us -- all of us who have participated in the Eucharistic celebration with conscious awareness of what we are saying and praying and receiving during Mass. Go forth in bold confidence! Jesus is sending you out from the church with his Spirit and his sufficiency.

However, when we do the packing and decide what to take with us on the mission, we like to take an abundance of stuff, just in case we might need it. Thus, we fail to show others that God is reliable and trustworthy.

To be effective evangelizers, we have to surrender over to God whatever baggage interferes with our mission.

Remember this: Surrender is not truly surrender unless we no longer want what we surrendered. If we still have some desire for it, we're attached to it by a bungee cord that yanks us back to it, yanking us away from our true purpose in life.

Questions for Personal Reflection: In what areas of your life do you rely upon the Lord? What areas do you still need to entrust to him? What will you do this week to surrender any distrust?

Questions for Community Faith Sharing: What kind of "food" do others serve you when you rely on God to provide for your needs through them? How does their service to you help them understand God? What kind of baggage should be left at home instead of carrying it into ministry? How does letting go of this better reveal Jesus to others?

¿Qué áreas aún necesitas confiárselas a él?

Notes from the Liturgist Receiving Holy Communion

The Divine Worship Newsletter from the Archdiocese of Portland for the month of June issued an article in regards to the importance of the Holy Eucharist we received and showed us also how to receive the Holy Communion reverently. I am happy to share this article with you and please be ready to share it also to others.

The most Holy Eucharist, “stands at the center of the Church’s life,” since it truly “contains the Church’s entire spiritual wealth: Christ himself, our Passover and Living Bread.”

“The Church has received the Eucharist from Christ her Lord not as one gift – however precious – among so many others, but as the gift par excellence, for it is the gift of himself, of person in his sacred humanity, as well as the gift of his saving work.”

Therefore, it is of the upmost importance that we show the greatest of respect to and reverence for Our Lord truly present in the Holy Eucharist. The reverence with which we receive Holy Communion should be a sign of our inward disposition and belief.

It is important for us to occasionally review our practice and if necessary adapt to receive Holy Communion as the Church expects and to do so as reverently as possible so as to please God and to edify our brothers and sisters.

The Archdiocese of Portland has produced a short, informative and entertaining video to help us review our own reception of the Holy Communion. We can see the video in the website of the Archdiocese Portland under the office of the Divine Worship Newsletter Issue 9 – June 2018 and it is also shared at St. Mary’s Facebook page.

Many of us received our First Communion many years ago and since then perhaps we have not been as attentive as we could have been to a prayerful and reverent reception of Holy Communion.

Take a moment to see some things to consider when receiving Holy Communion and some things to avoid. Share the video with your family and friends as we pursue a more reverent and more prayerful recep-tion of Holy Communion.

The surpassing gift of the Eucharist is where the Church draws her life, the dynamic force of all her activity and her whole sense of purpose and direction. As the Second Vatican council proclaimed, the Eucha-ristic sacrifice is “source and summit of the Christian life.”

Those who receive Communion may receive either in the hand or on the tongue, and the decision should be that of the individual receiving, not of the person distributing Communion. If Communion is received in the hand, the hands should first of all be clean. If one is right handed the left hand should rest upon the right. The host will then be laid in the palm of the left hand and then taken by the right hand to the mouth. If one is left-handed this is reversed. It is not appropriate to reach out with the fingers and take the host from the person distributing.

The person distributing Communion says audibly to each person approaching, "The Body of Christ." This formula should not be altered, as it is a proclamation which calls for a response of faith on the part of the one who receives. The communicant should audibly respond, "Amen," indicating by that response his or her belief that this small wafer of bread, the wine in this chalice are in reality the body and blood of Christ the Lord.

When one receives from the chalice, the same proclamation is made by the person distributing Communion and the Communicant again responds, "Amen." It should be noted that it is never permissible for a person to dip the host he or she has received into the chalice. If, for some reason, the communicant is not able or willing to drink from the cup then that person should receive only under the form of bread.

1. Register your child (age 4 through 5th grade). VBS runs from 9-noon July 30 - August 3. There is no registration fee: that's right, it's FREE! You can register online through the church website, at the office, or on forms posted on the Faith Formation bulletin board in the church.

2. Volunteer to help out during the week. We need middle school, high school and adult volunteers. We are still looking for help all over, but especially in Bible Discovery.

3. Help provide snacks/supplies or donate funds to cover the costs associated with VBS. A wish list is posted in the church.

If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne Duda in the office or at [email protected].

Family Opportunity Each month with a 5th Sunday, the Knights of Columbus hold a family rosary before each mass. The point of this is to encourage families to pray the rosary together.

If your family would be interested in leading the rosary on the weekend of July 28/29th, please contact any Knight who can forward the information to Stuart Conser. You do not have to be a member of the Knights of Columbus or Catholic Daughters. The rosary starts 10 minutes before mass and we only ask that you do a decade. To make it easy for the family, a script will be placed on the ambo for each mass.

Dad, this is a great way to lead your family to pray the rosary and to pray together.

Thank you for considering this request.

The Knights or one of our families

will lead a decade of the Rosary before each mass.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish 2018 Silver Rose Pilgrimage

July 14, 2018

Each year the Knights of Columbus conduct an international pilgrimage with a silver rose to honor the Blessed Virgin.

The symbol for the rose is closely linked to Our Lady. In fact, the

word “rosary” stands for a garland of roses honoring Mary.

The rose also plays a prominent part in the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas.

In Rome, December 2014, Pope Francis received and blessed a silver rose on the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Each April identical roses are directed southward from Canada on a long journey of prayer that will end on December 12th at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish is among the nine parishes in Oregon chosen to host this year’s Silver Rose Pilgrimage and celebrate Mary as the patroness of human life at all its stages.

The Knights of Columbus Color Guard in full regalia will welcome the Silver Rose as it arrives from Salem, Saturday July 14, 2018 prior to the 5 pm mass. Prayer service and a blessing will take place in con-junction with the weekend Masses and Liturgies to honor our Holy Mother.

Please join us with your family and friends for this blessing-

filled event. Thank you!

The rose, symbol of purity,

was the central element in the 1531 miracle

of Guadalupe in which roses appeared in

the tilde of Juan Diego, a humble peasant.
