July 12, 2020 2 SAINT BERNARD

Maybe you’ve attended a festival or a concert in which there were hundreds or even thousands of people crammed in immediately around you. Perhaps you’ve been to an extremely busy restaurant with family and have spent time waiting for a table. Or maybe you’ve been to a sporting event where the crowds have turned out in droves to cheer on the home team. When we encounter Jesus in today’s Gospel, we find him going out from a house and heading down to the seashore. There, a very large number of people gather around him. Matthew’s account of the story states that the crowds that were gathered around Jesus were extremely large in number. There are so many people that Jesus felt the need to have a bit more space. So, he got into a boat and pushed off a bit from the edge of the water so that he could have a bit of space in order to share his message. He turned to his favorite teaching: sharing parables. Parables are usually short stories that are allegorical in nature and have meaning to them that are meant to convey a deeper truth to those who hear it. Jesus loved to share parables to help understand what his truth was that he was sharing with them. Today’s parable centers upon an image of the sowing of the seeds. The one who was sowing the seeds in the story spread them out in different locations with different surfaces upon which the seeds land. Some land on the path where hungry birds quickly scoop them up. Others land on very rich soil and, as a result, are able to produce good fruit. Visualize each of these types of surfaces. A key piece of Jesus’ sharing of this tale can be found in the statement he makes at the very end of the parable. “Whoever has ears ought to hear”. This message is for everyone and it concerns how we prepare the soil of our lives for receiving the seeds sown, namely, the message, the Good News that Jesus is sharing with us.

Celebration of Mass

♦ Masks must be worn in Church. ♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet) ♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church. ♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people). ♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other. ♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctuary on either side of the altar and in the back

of church by the double doors. You may put all your first and second collection envelopes and offerings in any of the baskets.

♦ There is not to be any gathering in the vestibule before or after Mass. ♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any questions or concerns. ♦ The Church will be sanitized twice a week, on Friday and Monday, before and after week-

end Masses.

Receiving Communion ♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for

the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and consume the Eucharist and replace their mask.

♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distributed. ♦ Parishioners will come for Communion observing at least 6 feet of distance between them

as they approach. The floor has markings on it. ♦ IT IS VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARISHIONERS RECEIVE HOLY COMMUN-

ION IN THE HAND. This is for the safety of the parishioner receiving Holy Communion and the minister of Holy Communion. If a parishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Communion line so they are the last ones re-ceiving so that the Communion ministers can disinfect their hands if need be after each person receives.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The Feast in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel has always been a great success and tremendous fun for all. Unfortunately due to the Corona pandemic we are unable to celebrate the feast the way we normally do. This year will be very different. We will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Saturday July 25th and Sunday July 26th. The statue will be displayed outside the Church over the weekend for all to see. We wouldn’t want to let this long standing tradition of honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel to pass us by. We hope you are able to support this important event. There will be a special blessing and prayers in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at all Masses that weekend. This annual event is one of our biggest and vital fund-raisers. In order to help make this event a success we need your help! If you own a business, please consider becoming a Sponsor of our event. If you do not own a business, consider a sponsorship In Honor or In Memory of a loved one. There are three different sponsorship levels, Cherubim, Archangel and Angel. Each of these sponsorships will advertise and highlight your business or loved one. Your spon-sorship will be highlighted with an outdoor lawn sign displaying your business or loved one on the parish lawn for the entire week and then is yours to take home. It will also appear in our Sponsorship Video playing in Church for the weekend Masses on July 25th & July 26th and on our website – www.saintbernardbrooklyn.com and Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/stbernardrc for the entire year, as well as in our Feast Mass Booklet. Please see the Sponsor Order Form.

There is a form for memorializing candles. This is another way that you could help support St. Bernard. Please fill out the form and return it to the rectory. Candles will be displayed over the weekend and can be taken home as a keepsake. You can also purchase raffle tickets. $10 each or 3 for $25. Please take a chance to be a winner! Please pick your tickets up at the rectory. 1st Prize -$1000, 2nd Prize -$500 & 3rd Prize -$250 You can also purchase 50/50 boxes! Pick a number 1-100. Come & get your boxes in the rectory! Numbers are on a first come first serve basis. $10 per box and $500 to the lucky winner! We hope that you will be able to help us in any way possible to make this years “No Feast” a great success! Thank You
