On behalf of our Board of Directors, I want to welcome you to the 2020 Parade of Homes, presented by the West Texas Home Builders Association. This year commemorates the 65th Anniversary of our Association’s Parade. We have 26 Homes in three outstanding neighborhoods, South Fork Ranch, Escondido Ranch and Cantera offering homes in all price ranges.

The West Texas Home Builders Association has been excited and anxious about this year’s parade. We are grateful for your continued support of this long-standing Lubbock tradition. During this time of low interest rates, we hope that you will take the opportunity to purchase a home from one of Lubbock’s elite builders. Whether you are looking for a new home, getting ideas for a remodeling project, exploring new trends in decorating, or just simply enjoying this annual experience, we are glad that you are here.

On behalf of the West Texas Home Builders Association and the 2020 Parade of Homes Committee, it is my honor to welcome you to the 65th Annual Parade of Homes. We are excited to offer three sites for this year’s Parade of Homes. The subdivisions of South Fork Ranch, Escondido Ranch, and Cantera have proven to be the top contenders for this event. These three subdivisions will offer a total of 26 homes for you to tour and enjoy.

We ask you to take a moment to appreciate the results of a well-orchestrated celebration of an industry that is so crucial to the continued growth of this great city. If you have ever driven by these sites during the construction phase, you begin to realize the impact that homebuilding has, not only on this city, but the state, and our great nation. One look down the streets, and you will recognize the countless jobs and opportunities this industry provides for so many families and individuals.

I would like to say a special “thank you” to First Bank & Trust, Atmos Energy, PrimeWest Mortgage and Title One for their wonderful support as this year’s sponsors. These companies offer tremendous services to the homebuilding industry and their participation is greatly appreciated year after year.

Each year, the WTHBA chooses to “give back” to a charity in our community. We are so proud to partner with West Texas Hero Homes again this year. It is the goal of this organization to provide mortgage-free homes to as many deserving veterans and first responders as possible, so a portion of the proceeds from this year’s sales will go to benefit West Texas Hero Homes and their vision.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the staff at WTHBA, the members of our parade committee, the developers of these great subdivisions, and our many volunteers for their superb efforts and tireless work. Countless man hours have been invested by these groups year after year to make this the best parade of homes event in the country. The country is divided over the Vietnam

war, the Beatles are banned from most

radio stations, and miniskirts are the newest

fashion trend. Lubbock is the fastest

growing city in the nation, and LHBA

membership grows to 30 builders and 51

N E W B E G I N N I N G S

The newly formed Lubbock Home Builders

Association boards the Santa Fe Railway

to Chicago for the National Homebuilders

Association Convention. On their return, The

“Cavalcade of Homes” is born, showcasing

13 homes in South Lubbock. The population

of Lubbock nearly doubles in the next few

years to 128,000 by 1959, and with it grows

the Lubbock home building industry.

50's

N E W I D E A S

Lubbock’s start to the 70’s is a tragic one.

An F-5 tornado causes $200 million in

damages, killing 26, and injuring hundreds.

Tornado reconstruction is the immediate

priority of the city and Lubbock home

builders. Members travel to Dallas and

associates by 1961. A highly anticipated

Cavalcade of Homes is featuring “Show

Home 66” with futuristic designs from

architect Sanford Whitaker. In 1968, under

the presidency of Raymond Taylor, the

Lubbock Home Builders Association

regroups to overcome financial problems,

regain its charter, and changes its name to

the West Texas Home Builders Association.

2010’s

California for new ideas and features for

homes, such as townhomes, paved alleys,

and rear garages. By the end of the decade,

membership grows to 218 and the WTHBA

invests in an office building on University.

The 1978 Parade of Homes features 16

all-electric homes.

N E W R E C O R D S

The WTHBA auxiliary is chartered in

1983 with a record-breaking 24 original

members and membership quadrupled

over the course of just one year. The

WTHBA introduces a bond program

to combat high-interest rates and help

moderate-income families own a home.

The 1987 Parade of Homes features 10

builders in 5 communities across Lubbock.

In 1989, a fire causes significant damage to

the WTHBA office building. Members pull

together in resilient fashion to completely

restore and improve the building to look

better than ever.

S T R O N G E R T H A N E V E R

In 1990, the Home Products and Leisure

show is renamed the “Home and Garden

Show” and held at the Civic Center. How to

incorporate and install brass fixtures in the

home is a hot topic. Zelda Cuevas becomes

the first female president of the association

in 1996 and the association is stronger

than ever.

90's

F L O U R I S H M E N T

Lubbock survives Y2K and sees the fastest

growth rate since the 1970's. In 2008,

the Fall Tour of Homes is introduced and

community attendance for the year swells

as the city celebrates its centennial in 2009.

As the economy slowly rebounds from the

recession, Lubbock and it’s housing market

begin to flourish.

2000's

AWA R D S

Membership grows to 786 in 2015 making

the WTHBA the third largest association

in Texas! The WTHBA wins the Texas

Association of Builders 2010 & 2016 award

for “Local Association of the Year." Robert

Wood receives the TAB 2011 Philanthropist

of the Year award at the Sunbelt Builders

Show. The WTHBA establishes a Student

Apprenticeship in order to encourage local

high school students to seek careers in

the building trades. The Parade of Homes

experiences record attendance and new

housing developments are continually

introduced. The WTHBA creates a new

charity called West Texas Hero Homes and

builds six new mortgage-free homes for

local wounded veterans.

TYSEN & DANETTE MORTENSEN


Tysen Mortensen was raised on a ranch where he learned the value

of good land, hard work, and being honest. Tysen is a graduate

of Texas Tech University and has a background in business, sales,

and residential construction. He is a past Parade of Homes winner,

including Best Landscaping and Best of Show. Tysen and his wife

Danette are the proud parents of five children who they are striving

to raise with West Texas values.

Tysen and his father Carl Mortensen own Mortensen Properties and

have been developing subdivisions in Lubbock and the surrounding

areas for the past 20 years. Several of their developments have been

featured in past Parades of Homes.

Tysen is excited to host this year’s Parade of Homes at South Fork

Ranch. This is an excellent property with good water located

The year is 1955 and Lubbock is the “cotton center of the world.” Your family’s new home, with its wood paneling, pastel furniture, and wall to wall carpet is the trendiest on the block. You walk outside and slide into a car with no seat belts as your friend peels off to the show. Rock and roll is coming through town by way of Elvis Presley, and Buddy is keen to have a good view. Five years and one tragic plane crash later, your home is completely changed. Pastels gave way to bolder - neon colors, and different colors of shag carpet anchor each room. Your ultrasoft flooring stays in place, but with the 70’s comes a brighter neighborhood as large walls of glass are incorporated in newer homes. Harvest gold appliances are the new must-have accents to your patterned wallpaper, and a floating staircase would look groovy across from your sunken living room.

By the time the era of electronics brings movies into the home in 1980, a built-in entertainment system is the focus of your living room. Skylights and cathedral ceilings are in vogue along with glass block window designs and a finished basement. When the sitcom apartments of the 90’s light up your television, the world is introduced to the “shabby chic” interior of long floral curtains, walk-in closets, and brass fixtures. A side garden and larger backyard are on your list of home improvements.

When you exhale after Y2K, suddenly white-on-white is everything as Ikea invades your home with Scandinavian minimalism.
