The project includes the design of the centre for north-ern lights observation in Finnish Lapland in Luosto ski - centre area. The western site of the project is sur-rounded by a 512m high Luosto Hill which belongs to Pyha-Luosto National Park. The area’s magnificent landscape attracts tourists all-year round for hiking and skiing, as well as for an an-nual Luosto Musical Festival that happens every sum-mer. The site is located on the 300 m high level above the sea, which makes it visually perfect for observing the northern lights; it is also situated further from the ski-centre to avoid light-pollution. The idea of design-ing such a centre was consulted with the geophysicist from Sodankyla Geophysical Observatory (that is situ-ated in 40km distance) who expressed the interest in having a science museum exhibition room for displaying old instruments, which have been used for the Northern Lights research. The close proximity to the Observa-tory would make the Centre get significance in terms of receiving scientific information for educational purpose of the visitors.

The project consists of the main building ap-prox. 2000 m2, which includes exhibition rooms, lecture rooms, small library, archives, offices, restaurant and 15 small cabins for visi-tors to stay over the night with the possibility to see the northern lights within the rooms. The design is focused mainly on 3 types of cab-ins around 30-35 m2, that have a cosy inte-rior design, providing all the essential functions within the cabins. The structure is chosen to be

prefabricated Cross-Laminated Timber panels that are assembled on the site and have a mini-mum footprint on the surrounding nature. The e-glass panels provide the possibility to keep the view clear even with the low temperatures. The centre is designed to attract tourists and local people all-year round to study and ob-serve Northern Lights Phenomena being close to nature.

OULU PAVILION “EXPERIENCE THE WOOD”

The Pavilion is located walking distance from Oulu city centre in the Kiikeli area. The site is an island with a wooden deck and is dominated by high birches. The atmosphere on the site is calm and peaceful, as people come here to enjoy the weather and the natural environ-ment. The idea to create a pavilion in this location came with the need to provide a logical ending for the wooden deck’s path.

The designed pavilion is a place to spend time gaining new spatial and sensory experiences. Its simple geo-metrical shape provides clear circulation within the pa-vilion, as well as merging the structure to its surrounding cityscape. There are four different layers in the shape of the cube which forms the structure.Wood was chosen as a main material for the pavilion because of its versatility and aesthetics.

Each layer has different wooden surface to experience: even wooden blocks, rustic planks, willow branches and burnt wood. The transition concerns not only surfaces, but also colours and structures. The further the visitor walks into the pavilion, the more dramatically the interior changes. Natural Light plays an important role in the structure, revealing the surfaces by penetrating from the external layers. During the night the situation changes and the light comes from the core of the pavilion illumi-nating the external layers.

The room in the centre of the pavilion can be used for different art performances, exhibitions and light instal-lations.

KITCHEN DESIGN

Designed kitchen is located on the top floor of a family house in Pujalt, Spain.

The building has a steel frame structure with concrete floor and huge glazed facades. The design was aimed to follow this particular architectural style. Clear geometry, pure ma-terial surfaces, simple lines and a minimal approach were chosen for it.

The kitchen has suspended cabinetry with a concrete fin-ish. The countertop is formed with a dark colour solid durat material that culminates at one end with a stand and shelves.

The upper part of the kitchen is very minimal and has only a stainless steel casing with a hood and splash back made out of frosted glass. The material palette is achromatic with the only accent being a green decorative grass plant recessed to the countertop.

In spite of an apparent simplicity, kitchen is equipped with everything needed for occasional cooking.

The Marjamae hotel and recreation centre is located in Tallinn in an attractive area near the sea shore.

The plot is surrounded by the historically important Orlov’s Castle and Exhibition Pavilions.The site is also dominated by a 20m high limestone slope and the building is designed as part of it. The shape and the dark edgy look of the building were inspired by a layered surface of limestone. Different levels create terraces, with views towards the sea, and spacious voids which allow natural light to penetrate inside the building. The Marjamae centre is a 6-storey multifunctional building that has a health centre with SPA, confer-ence centre, hotel and a big restaurant designed around the inner courtyard. The spacious hall in the middle of the building provides the entrance to dif-

ferent parts of the Centre. Most of the hotel rooms are facing the sea and the SPA centre is oriented towards the south, which makes it also possible to enjoy the sun in the winter time.

The parking spaces and technical rooms for the swimming pools are designed under the ground level.

The building has a reinforced concrete structure; the facade is a dark selective glazing with limestone decoration on balconies. The Marjamae Centre of-fers many possibilities for different groups of peo-ple. Its location near the city centre makes it attrac-tive not only for local people, but also for tourists

visiting Tallinn.

Today, we are living in stacked similar entities, allowing only dis-placements from one to another through machines (stairs, lifts, trains…). We just pop up in our destination without experiencing any space or social interaction during the way.

Innovative architecture approaches can drastically improve the cur-rent situation by bringing movement, diversity, sense of space, and social interaction in order to create an environment adapted to the human being.

720 Bourke Street is an office and retail use building located in Mel-bourne Docklands. It provides 46,500 m2 office space over 16 levels; 2,000sqm of retail space spread over the concourse and park levels. Building features a green façade / terraces and urban spaces with organic themes capturing Medibank’s concept of living and breathing for better health.

Tasks during internship: Construction drawings of plant rooms and roof level, sections and details of the top floors, ceiling plans and wet area plans detailings.

Oulu dental university is a project that provides students and professors appropriate environment for study, research and everyday work. The build-ing is an extension of the existing medical university. It features spacious internal courtyards for letting more daylingt into the building. All waiting areas for clients have a view to the pine forest that surrounds the building.

Tasks: Design and modelling the project in Revit, creating detailed plans and axonometric views of different departments, facade design and detail-ing.

The private house in Pujalt in Spain is designed for 2 families living to-gether. 4 floors accommodate flexible rooms created with partitions. One side of the building is ajusted to the old stone wall. The facade replicates the look of the old wall and merges the building into its surrounding. The oppisite longitudinal wall is a cutrain wall with steel beams.

The Immersery hub was designed to be a centrepiece of the 2014 Mel-bourne Food and Wine Festival sited on the edge of the Yarra River at Queensbridge Square on Melbourne’s Southbank. Responding to the Fes-tival’s theme – water – a multi-tiered installation cascading over the edge of the river was developed. The three states of water – solid, liquid and vapour – were the inspiration for the three key spaces, celebrating the role of water in urban life.A construction barge, floating on the river, represented the solid state of water and hosted a cocktail bar. The Queensbridge Square concourse used planting to demonstrate water in its liquid form, creating a lush land-scape for the festival kitchen and raingarden lounge. Above these, the ‘cloud’ pavilion, representing vapour, presented a unique experience.Taking advantage of existing site conditions the installation added ele-ments to heighten the experience and demonstrate what is possible in the urban context. Strong vertical movement over existing and tempo-rary stairs symbolised phases in the water cycle and offered a dynamic spatial arrangement.
