Ever wondered what

happens in a church tower

when the bell ropes are

pulled? Ever wanted to see the

mechanism of a church clock in

action as it strikes?

These are just two of the activities

on offer as 160 churches join

together to give a special

welcome to visitors over two

weekends in July.

The Open Churches Weekends

(on the 13th/14th & 20th/21st of

July) have been organised by the

Diocese of Southwell &

Nottingham’s Church History

Project for the fourth year

running, following a successful

pilot in 2010.

Bishop Paul said: “These

weekends will give many more

people the chance to discover or

rediscover the rich variety of

churches we have across the

county. Apart from the amazing

history and architecture, with

stories that bring the past alive,

our churches are places of prayer

and worship, at the heart of the

local community. My hope is that

visitors over the weekends will

want to find out more about the

faith that led these places to be

built and that continues to

transform people and

communities in this country and

the wider world.”

Project coordinator, Heather

Sirrel, said; “Everyone is

welcome – families, walkers,

historians, pilgrims, locals,

tourists, or the just plain curious...

it’s a fantastic opportunity to

come to see these buildings and

simply soak up the heritage –

both architectural and spiritual.”

There will be a whole range of

activities and events taking place

at the churches opening for the

weekends, from flower festivals

and fair trade sales to displays of

Bibles and historical records,

tours, tower trips, sporting

activities, musical events and

much more. Many will also be

getting into the summer spirit

with strawberry teas and cream

teas available.

in 2011 and 2012, the

Cathedral Education

Department and the Diocesan

Development Department are

once again collaborating to hold a

day of light-hearted workshops

start our day with a short

illustrated talk on “Art and

Faith”.

Ride round England with

William Reddaway and his horse

William Reddaway (65) and his horse Strider from

Cheltenham, set out on an ambitious adventure on 11th

May 2013. They intend to travel to all four corners of

England via 30 Cathedrals to raise awareness for two charities, the

Family Holiday Association and the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre.

William will visit Southwell Minster on 24th July 2013.

A keen horseman, William has always loved travelling and wanted to

to a seriously long journey. This project has been over two years in

planning, William realised he could not undertake the 2,500 mile

journey until he retired, which he did last summer.

Farncombe Estate, above the village of Broadway in Cotswolds,

where William worked for 28 years is providing the venue for the

start and finish of the journey.

8 July/August 13

The Revd Alison Cox writes:

How long has it taken you

to get here this morning?

was the opening to a

sermon preached by a Southwell

curate in a KwaZuluNatal church

recently. Journey times varied but

none could match over 50 years,

which is the time that had elapsed

since the preacher first sensed a

call to Africa!

Some of us had waited less time

but we all set out with excitement

and differing expectations, hopes

and concerns, to work in parishes

in and around the cities of Durban

and Pietermaritzburg, on the coast

and in the northern town of

Newcastle. We took services

(Yes, they really were at 7 and 9

am Sunday mornings), lead study

groups, helped in local projects,

drank tea, sat with the bereaved,

rejoiced at baptisms ... All the

things of a curacy in Southwell

but for the most part happening in

glorious sunshine.

The similarities of ministry here

and there were balanced by the

contrasts: the extremes of wealth

and poverty we do not see in our

diocese, the preoccupation with

safety and security, the

unfailingly overwhelming

generosity of hospitality and time

from everyone we met and the

real joy and gratitude that we had

come to visit them and their

country.

People were keen to tell us their

stories. These helped make sense

of the things we saw, in a country

striving to achieve in a short,

post- apartheid time what it has

taken a country like the US much

longer.

We reflected that the Anglican

Church is well-placed to offer the

stability and theology that a

newly-emerging society urgently

needs. We saw church leaders and

members working at every level

for peace and reconciliation in

every strand of society.

Particularly memorable were

projects in the poorest

communities – a soup kitchen in

central Durban, an after-school

club for orphans of HIV/AIDS in

a township. (The reality and

value of the diocesan link came

home to us when we met the

sister of Pearl Nzuzu, the diocese

of Natal’s youth advisor who has

been in Southwell recently, in her

home township at an after school

club. She and her friends knew all

about our visit.)

We saw the strength of

organisations within the church,

such as the Mothers Union,

whose members provide vital

practical support to children and

young people orphaned by

AIDS..

We returned to Southwell after

this wonderful, challenging and

humbling experience more tanned

than when we left and with bags

bulging with souvenirs. We also

brought back new awareness of

the world church and the

Anglican communion, a stronger

sense of what a diocesan link can

mean and fresh vision for our

current and future ministries.

These we believe will last when

the tans have faded.

The Revd Lucy Cleland writes:

Peace and reconciliation will

be the focus of Bishop

Paul’s two-week visit to

Burundi and Rwanda this August.

The visit will help promote

understanding about issues of

peace and reconciliation and how

what has been learned there can

be applied to situations in the UK

and elsewhere. A key element of

the trip will be continuing to

build the partnership between this

diocese and the Anglican Church

in Burundi.

Bishop Paul will be accompanied

by John Mann (Bassetlaw MP)

and Lilian Greenwood

(Nottingham South MP) and two

MPs from other areas. They will

meet with Archbishops of both

countries along with senior

politicians and officials. Part of

their focus will be seeing projects

which are focused on peace and

reconciliation, both through the

local church and the community.

This will include Christian Aid

partner projects.

The group also includes the Revd

Sarah Clark, Dean of Women’s

Ministry and Rector of the

Clifton Team Ministry. “I feel

really excited and privileged to be

part of this opportunity to

experience work towards peace

and reconciliation in such a real

situation,” says Sarah. “I hope

that my own vision of how faith

and justice, Church, State and

organisations partner together to

bring divided peoples together,

will be shaped and fired by the

experience, changing how I go

about my everyday role and

vocation as a Christian.”

Poppy Richards who is studying

Theology at Chester University

will be recording the trip and

offering a young person’s

perspective on the experience.

She lives in Ordsall and is a

member of John Mann’s

led by Helen Nice

The Scriptures are full of the

wonders of the visible universe.

explore the beauty and intricacy of

the infinitely small, we can see new

dimensions to God’s creativity and wisdom. How might these new

discoveries help our understanding of God and ourselves? Can

Helen Nice has been a minister in the Methodist Church for nearly 10

years, currently having pastoral charge of the congregations in

Southwell, Sutton on Trent, Elston and Edingley. After a degree in

Botany she did some research in plant cell development. She has

since worked in the Health Service and in Chaplaincy with Methodist

better change for most of

us than working in a different

environment where we are also

able to give something back.

Launde Abbey, the diocesan

Volunteers will find much to

There are two holidays, one from

12th–15th of August,

concentrating more on the

Abbey’s gardens and the other a

week later from 19th–23rd
