    NATO VETERANS HONOURED WITH FLAG DEDICATION

    UNIT 5 IN CAMBRIDGE CANADA DAY PARADEUnit 5 members rode in this restored jeep provided by Terry Chamberlain of

    Cambridge. Ron McNulty, Gerry Bryan and Ron Gowing enjoyed the ride.

    n honour of those former 822 Squadron cadets and all veterans who served with

    NATO Forces in Afghanistan, Unit 5 hosted a NATO Flag dedication service at the

    Unit's HQ located at the Waterloo Regional Airport. A large number of veterans ,

    family members and community friends attended the special service led by padre the

    Reverend Canon David Boyer of Cambridge.

    Three new flagpoles were erected by Cadet Youth Development Centre volunteers

    Wayne Hyde, Allan and David Gowing to accommodate the flying of the NATO flag.

    Following the blessing of the flag, Unit 5 President Gerry Bryan and Sgt. Grant

    Philpott, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, raise the flag while 822 Squadron Pipesand Drums played the NVOC anthem "The Maple Leaf For Ever".

    Unit 5's NATO Fla has ermanent home.

    PORTRAITS OF HONOUR CANADA FLAGS

    ARE TRUE SYMBOLS OF REMEMBRANCE

    Boyer as he conducted the dedication of a pair of Canadian flags. These flagsmounted on oak bases travelled with the now famous `Portraits of Honour` cross-

    Canada tour during 2011. Affixed to the bases are memorial plates honouring fou

    of the young men from the Cambridge area who gave their lives while serving witNATO forces in Afghanistan. These flags will now form part of a permanent

    memorial in the Cadet Youth Development Centre. Participating in the ceremonywas `Portrait of Honour` artist Dave Sopha who is also a member of NVOC Unit 5

    Tyler Todd a fellow volunteer fire-fighter prior to joining the Canad

    Forces and going to Afghanistan.

    In turn members of Unit five step up to the podium

    to read tributes to each of the four young men who

    made the supreme sacrifice. Sgt. Grant Philpott,Ron McNulty, Gerry Bryan, Ron Gowing and Fire-

    fighter Brian Murray honoured these young men.

    Also in attendance were Pte. Tyler Todd`s parents.

    Members of Unit 5 donated one of these flags at the

    conclusion of the tour. The second flag was the

    result of special fund raising by the cadets of 822Tutor Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Cadet. Six

    former 822 Cadets, as members of the Canadian

    Armed Forces served with NATO in Af hanistan

    Unit 5's first veteran of the Afghan war is a true heroand an inspiration to all. Trooper Greg Linton usedhis tenacity and determination to overcome all

    obstacles in his path. Greg had been in Afghanistan

    was destroyed by a roadside improvised explosive device

    Seriously wounded he was flown by helicopter to a fieldhospital at Bagram Airbase to be stabilized before a fligh

    to a military hospital in

    Germany. After surger

    he was then returned toCanada for further

    treatment and rehab.

    Determined to live hisdream of a career in the

    Canadian Forces he nev

    gave up. He has re-mustered into an aviati

    trade to allow him to us

    his machinist skills as a

    Aviation Tech within thAir Force environment

    Recommended for theQueen Elizabeth II

    International Hockey Tournament.He is assisted by his former CO

    (Rtd.) LCol. Ron Gowing and thefather of the "Great One" Walter

    Gretzky. Greg had just beenreleased from hospital allowing

    him to participate in the activitiesof the tournament where he had

    volunteered as an Air Cadet.

    Still in a body brace Greg was

    Gerry Bryan. This was Greg's first
