Juilliard Pre-College Symphony
Since Juilliard’s founding in 1905, hundreds of generous individuals have supported future generations of young artists with bequests and other planned gifts for the school. By including Juilliard in your estate plans, you too can provide critical assistance for the school and the musicians, dancers, and actors studying here, and help them thrive as they embark on their careers in the performing arts.
For more information about planned giving, please contact Lori Padua at (212) 799-5000, ext. 7152, or [email protected], or visit juilliard.edu/plannedgiving.

The Juilliard Pre-College Symphony is one of the Pre-College Division’s three age-based orchestras. With an average age of just over 15, the symphony rehearses weekly and presents three concerts each season. As a leading youth orchestra training program, the division strives to prepare its members for the rigorous demands and expectations of conservatory and college orchestral programs by offering workshops and readings led by renowned guest conductors and prominent professional orchestral musicians. The Pre-College orchestras draw upon the significant resource of the College Division’s students by employing them as mentors to work alongside the Pre-College students. The repertoire is guided by a progressive curriculum beginning with the youngest string ensemble and continuing through the symphony and orchestra, ensuring that all students have exposure to works from varied composers, musical styles and genres. Every orchestra concert features a concerto, providing an important opportunity to a student soloist, many of whom go on to important careers. Included among those are Han-Na Chang, Pamela Frank, Gil Shaham, Joseph Lin, Yo-Yo Ma, Jon Manasse, Roberto Minczuk, Conrad Tao, and Joyce Yang. In the 2019–20 season, the Pre-College Symphony is led by James Ross and Adam Glaser. Past conductors have included James Conlon, Alan Gilbert, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Itzhak Perlman, David Robertson, Leonard Slatkin, and Joshua Weilerstein.

Meet the Artists
James Ross
James Ross is music director of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and orchestra director of the National Youth Orchestra USA at Carnegie Hall. He recently completed a 16-year tenure as professor and director of orchestral activities at the University of Maryland at College Park. Ross has conducted such orchestras as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Utah Symphony, Les Arts Florissants, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Chicago Civic Orchestra, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica of Galicia, Mexico City Philharmonic, Kwazulu-Natal Philharmonic, and National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. He has served as music director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra and Orquesta Simfonica del Valles and assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His principal conducting teachers were Kurt Masur, Otto-Werner Mueller, Seiji Ozawa, and Leonard Bernstein. Ross has been on the faculties of Yale University, the Curtis Institute of Music, and Haverford and Bryn Mawr colleges, and he taught conducting for four summers at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz. He was artistic director of the National Orchestral Institute at the University of Maryland from 2002 to 2012, where he created an impetus for change in the orchestral landscape of the U.S. He is internationally recognized for his work advancing the future of orchestras through cross-genre collaborations. Ross is a native of Boston, an improviser, a committed questioner of concert rituals, a man who likes to move, and a firm believer in and advocate for the ongoing humanizing impact of classical music on the lives of those it touches.
Elli Choi
A seasoned performer at age 18, violinist Elli Choi has appeared throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East at venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, La Maison Symphonique in Montreal, Dvorak Hall in Prague, Berliner Philharmonie, De Doelen in Rotterdam, Tonhalle in Zurich, Die Grosser Saal in Salzburg, and Burj Khalifa in Dubai. She has collaborated with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, Salzburg Chamber Soloists, Sofia Philharmonic, Monte Carlo Philharmonic, Das Sinfonie Orchestrer Berlin, Novosibirsk Philharmonic, Interlaken Classic Festival Orchestra, Sejong Soloists, Juilliard Orchestra, Zakhar Bron Chamber, Korean Symphony, Corpus Christi Orchestra, North Shore Chamber Orchestra, and Musica Nova. Choi won the Monaco World Music Masters Competition in 2016 and this year was awarded second prize at the Zhuhai Mozart International Competition in China. She was the youngest finalist of the Montreal Violin Competition and the youngest participant of the 16th Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in the same year. She won first prize at both the Wieniawski-Lipinski Violin Competition and Sofia Young Virtuoso Competition. Choi plays a Matteo Goffriller made in 1698.

The cornerstones of Juilliard’s Preparatory Division are two Saturday music programs, Juilliard Pre-College and the Music Advancement Program. One of the foremost music preparatory programs in the world, Juilliard Pre-College, which celebrated its centennial last season, offers a comprehensive conservatory-style music program for students ages 8 to 18 who exhibit the talent, potential, and ambition to pursue music study at the college level. The selective program includes instruction in a chosen major, academic study of music, and solo and ensemble performances. Recognizing the importance of early development and discipline in the music field, the program provides a caring, collaborative, and challenging atmosphere where artistic gifts and technical skills can flourish. Approximately 300 students are enrolled in Pre-College, which is led by Artistic Director Yoheved Kaplinsky.
Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program (MAP) is an instrumental instruction program for students from New York City’s five boroughs and the tristate area who exhibit great musical potential. The program actively seeks students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in the classical music field and is committed to enrolling the most talented and deserving students regardless of their financial background. Through a comprehensive curriculum, performance opportunities, and summer study partnerships, MAP students gain the necessary skills to pursue advanced music studies while developing their talents as artists, leaders, and global citizens. Approximately 70 students are enrolled in MAP, which is led by Artistic Director Anthony McGill.
