idiomatic expressions, metaphors, satire, parables, myth, etc. Eg: raining cats & dogs, how Aristophanes satirizes Socrates in ‘The Clouds’

3. Jesus Christ used parables to explain the Kingdom of Heaven, and reveal truth’s that are hard to explain. (Parable of the Rich man & Lazarus.)

4. Old Testament authors had to use Myth to elaborate God’s unfolding plan in the Old Testament

40 Years In the Wilderness… 1. Moses sends 12 scouts into the land, one from

each tribe… including Caleb of Judah & Joshua of Ephraim, reconnoiter the land of Canaan for 40 days & return. (Num 13)

2. Faith of Caleb: “We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so.”(Num 13:30)

3. People’s doubt: “We cannot attack these people, they are too strong for us.” (Num 13:31)

4. “…of all the men who have seen my Glory and the signs I worked in Egypt… no one shall see the land I promised…” (Num 14:22-23)

The Conquest of Canaan: Faith of Rahab

Two spies sent out into Jericho.

They arrive at Rahab’s inn; and Rahab hides the spies from the king’s pursuers.

After sending away the king’s people, she says the hidden spies: “I know that the Lord has given you the land, that a dread of you has come upon us… ” (Jos 2:9)

“For we heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you…” (Jos 2:10)

“…since your God, is God in heaven above and earth below…” (Jos 2:11)

Samuel is the judge/prophet of Israel. People ask for a king; “…appoint a king over us, as other nations have, to judge us.” (1 Sam 8:5)

God’s reply… “Grant their… request… they are rejecting me as their king… as they have treated me constantly from the day I brought them out of Egypt…” (1 Sam 8:7)

Samuel anoints Saul; (1 Sam 10) defeats the Ammonites & becomes King (1 Sam 11)

God tells Samuel to anoint the son of Jesse “…Jesse presented seven sons… but Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these” (1 Sam 16:10) “There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.”

David enters and… ; “The Lord said, ’There- anoint him, for there is he!’ ” (1 Sam 16:12)

Israel against the Philistines… Goliath, the Philistine champion, challenges one-on-one combat… David brings up food to his brothers on the Valley of Elah… “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine.. that he should insult the armies of God?” (1 Sam 17:26) “Your servant has killed both a lion and a bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be as one of them…” (1 Sam 17:36) “…the Lord who delivered me from…”(1 Sam 17:37) Is unable to wear Saul’s armor… (1 Sam 17:39)

Saul becomes jealous of David (1Sam 18:8) David is hunted by Saul wrote many psalms:

Let them that detract me be clothed with shame: and let them be covered with their confusion as with a double cloak. This is the gate of the Lord, the just shall enter into it. I will give glory to thee because thou hast heard me: and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders rejected; has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing , and it is wonderful in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made: let us be glad and rejoice therein.

“From the day that I appointed judges over my people Israel: and I will give thee rest from all thy enemies. And the Lord foretold to you, that the Lord will make you a house. And when thy days shall be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of the bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house to my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom fore ever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son…” (2 Sam 7)

1. Solomon, son of David, asks & receives wisdom from God; “Give your servant an understanding heart to judge your people… For who is able to govern this vast people of your?” (1 Kg 3:9)

2. Solomon builds the Temple; (1 Kg 5:15- 7:51)

3. The Ark of the Covenant is placed in the Holy of Holies in the Temple (1 Kg 8:6) and the cloud filled the temple; (1 Kg 8:10)

Solomon had heavily taxed the people… & so the people asked his son Rehoboam to lighten their load…

Rehoboam takes bad advice and answers the people: “My little finger is thicker than the back of my father. And now my father put a heavy yoke upon you, but I will add to your yoke, my father beat you with whips, but I will beat you with scorpions.” (1 Kg 12:10-11)

The kingdom splits into two…

Northern Israel & Southern Judah.

The Pre-exilic prophets, those who prophesied before the exile: (1) Jonah, Amos and Hosea, prophets of Israel. (2) Obadiah, Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Jeremiah, prophets of Judah.

The exilic prophets: Ezekiel and Daniel.

The Post-exilic prophets, prophets who prophesied after the captivity. All are of Judah and are Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi.
