This exhibition displays the contents of a time capsule buried in front of the Empress Place building on 29 December 1990. Objects include first National Service mobilisation, development plans from the 1970s, military medals, stamps, public phone cards, a very young SINGA, the courtesy mascot, and even a poster of Ah Meng, ambassador for the Singapore Zoo. Come experience the sights, sounds, and thoughts of Singaporeans of 25 years ago. Join our curator Maria Joseph Khoo on guided tours of the exhibition on 7 and 8 Aug, 2.30pm. Treasures from Asia’s Oldest Museum 16 June – 16 Aug 2015 Singapore’s historic ties to Kolkata give this exhibition a special resonance, especially in 2015, Singapore’s 50th anniversary, as well as the 50th anniversary if diplomatic relations between India and Singapore. Singaporeans will be able to enjoy an extended Jubilee Weekend from 7th to 10th August, so as to commemorate this significant milestone in our nation’s history. The Jubilee Weekend is a special time for Singaporeans to spend with their family, friends and community, to celebrate SG50 in a meaningful way. A variety of programmes have been organised around the island, to reflect our journey as a nation, to celebrate what makes Singapore our home, and to strengthen our ties as one people. Building Tour of the National Museum of Singapore 7 Aug 11am, 12pm, 2.30pm (1 hr) 8 Aug 11am, 2.30pm, 5pm and 5.30pm (1 hr) Main entrance When it first opened in 1887 as the Raffles Library and Museum, the institution was commonly referred to by the locals as Rumah Kitab – The House of Books. It was then the resource institution for Southeast Asian Zoology and Natural History research and studies. The Museum’s role and collection has since evolved considerably over the years. Co-organised by the Museum Volunteers, this one-hour tour of the museum offers insight on the history and stories behind Singapore’s oldest museum, and its journey to become the National Museum of Singapore.

Singapore’s seven most illustrious directors have gathered their creative storytelling and filmmaking talents in a one-of-a-kind project celebrating Singapore’s 50th year. 7 Letters represents seven heartfelt ‘love letters’ to Singapore, capturing each of the directors’ personal and poignant connection with the place they call home. The seven stories tell of our heartland and its people through tales of lost love, identity, inter-generational familial bonds and tensions, unlikely neighbours, and even references to traditional folklore. Celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday at The Singapore Journey: 50 Years Through Stamps exhibition that traces the nation’s milestones through stamps and rarely seen stamp artworks. Dress up in ethnic costumes and play kampong games. Design a stamp and create a “flypast” scene. Join the show-and-tell session by the Singapore Stamp Club.
