Over the years, the Church has spoken to the movement in many ways. Yet the clear

voice of the Church which resounded in the Jubilee Conference through the most

reverend Cardinals and Bishops was a poignant consolidation of all the messages across

the years. As a movement, we will always be humbled and amazed by the great love of

the Church for us reflected in these messages. But beyond that, whether it be the 3 Ds

of Cardinal Ivan Dias, or the exhortation of Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko to be generous in

mission, each one of these beautiful messages will direct and inspire us to stay faithful to

our call and be witnesses to the love of Jesus in today’s world.

Page 6: Jubilee Compendium

My dear brothers and sisters, the beginning of the Jubilee celebration coincides with the celebration all over the Church of the Holy Innocents. So this is a wonderful occasion and is not a coincidence to think of the Holy Innocents on this day. They were, witnesses to Jesus, silent witnesses to Jesus the Lord. And it is that word I would like to emphasise on today, that which I would like you to take home when you go from here, that by which you can be renewed in your vocation, in your call, to be witnesses to Jesus Christ; with your sweat, with your words and if God wills, even with your blood!

The word ‘witness’ is very important. We all often say ‘I am a Christian’. What does it mean? It means that without ‘Christ’ I.A.N. = I am nothing. So we must convince ourselves of this fact that Jesus must be our everything and without him we are nothing.

M E S S A g ECardinal Ivan Dias

Jesus Must be our everythInG AND WITHOUT HIM WE ARE NOTHING. What would this mean in practice? I’ve got 3Ds to propose to you to have an in-depth vision of the Lord Jesus.

First is ‘Doctrine’ which means getting into the teachings of Jesus contained in the Bible, contained in the Magisterium and the Church’s teachings as symbolised by the Pope.

The second is ‘Discipline’ – a Christian is known to be a disciplined person, disciplined in mind, in heart and in body.

And then comes, ‘Devotion’. It means that we must show ourselves as sacred people, a consecrated people.

If we have these three points together while reflecting on Jesus as Priest, King and Prophet, then we can be sure our witnessing is complete. And the light that we give to others will really be shining. That’s what we want to do when we say ‘I am a Christian’.

The grounds of Rajagiri Engineering College, Kerala reverberated with these thunderous exhortations as the participants of the largest Jesus Youth gathering the world has ever seen, belted out the theme song for the Jesus Youth Jubilee Conference 2010.

For the first time ever, more than 20,000 Jesus Youth from 29 different countries came together under one roof from 28th December 2010 to 1st January 2011 to celebrate the culmination of the Jubilee Year of the movement. The Jubilee Conference was like a gigantic family reunion; a joyful time of thanksgiving, prayer, fellowship and an equal measure of celebration of the movement.

A time to give thanksWith nearly 1000 volunteers working in tandem, it was an awesome sight to see each team doing their bit with prayer induced energy (many had not slept for days!) as participants began to trickle in on 28th December 2010 morning. This inflow of participants gained momentum through the day and by evening the Rajagiri Campus resembled a sea of people with more than 20,000 people including 30 bishops, 794 priests, 977 religious sisters, 111 seminarians, 373 pre-teens, 1203 children, 2419 teenagers, 3104 married couples and 11,238 youth and singles.

DID you KnoW?The 20,000 plus participants drank up nearly 1,50,000 litres of water over the four days of the Conference. The total food consumption included 1,57,500 chappathis, 70,000 dosas, 57,000 iddlis, 58,000 iddiyappams and 56,000 appams, besides a whole range of curries and vegetables and of course, tons of rice.

A total of 146 buses were pressed into service to ferry the participants between their accommodation centres and the main venue during the days of the Conference. Each of these buses undertook an average of three trips daily - a whooping 2190 trips over 5 days!

Leading up to the Jubilee `

Though the Jubilee Year commenced with 2010, the preparations started much before the actual inauguration. The Jubilee Calendar was formally launched on 19th June 2009 by His Excellency Thomas Chakiath, Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly. The Jubilee fever picked up momentum with the International Assembly from 3rd - 6th December 2009 where more than 300 leaders from 18 countries including priests, religious, senior and youth leaders came together to take a closer look at what the Spirit had been doing

in and through the movement. This Assembly was crucial in evolving and articulating the vision for the movement for the future.

The Jubilee year was inaugurated with much fanfare on 1st January 2010. All the countries with JY presence celebrated in their own unique way. The common thread connecting all these joyful spurts across the globe was, the Inaugural Holy Mass, the handing of the Jubilee Cross and the Jubilee Candle, and the rendition of the Jubilee Prayer.

The Jubilee Cross contained a phial of soil from different countries, which was mixed, blessed and distributed during the International Assembly. The Jubilee Cross and Candle subsequently travelled through all the JY homes in their respective countries before it was finally brought to the Jubilee Conference venue.

Lent in the Jubilee Year was a special time of grace. The ‘100 Days of Grace’ starting from Ash Wednesday to the Feast of Pentecost was a time of prayer, penance and purification. Reflections on the two essential Jubilee themes - “clothing the movement in white linen” and “receiving the power from on high” (Luke 24:49) - were prepared by senior JY leaders and circulated among the Jesus Youth worldwide for discussion and prayer.

The setting up of local Adoration and intercession centres in many countries was like the battery charge for the Jubilee. In Rome, a round-the-clock intercession and Eucharistic Adoration was initiated by the Jesus Youth of Europe with the support of the Youth Section, Pontifical Council for Laity, from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday at the International Youth Centre, Centro San Lorenzo. The ‘100 Days of Grace’ concluded with the ’recommitment Day’ celebrated on the feast of Pentecost, wherein every Jesus Youth re-committed himself and the whole movement to Christ. As a Jubilee special event, this day was also observed as ‘reunion Day’ when members from different generations, all came together to celebrate the big family of Jesus Youth.

Several innovative Jubilee projects and outreaches took shape throughout the year with the involvement of Jesus Youth of all ages from across the world. Like ‘outreach-Child support’ - a project aimed at providing financial support for education to 2500 children from South and South East Asia. There were others meant for personal growth and reflection: Mission month videos by Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil of Guwahati and sharing your faith story through the JY website (slice of Life). Yet another initiative was the signing up for one-month mission commitments

by individuals and families as a whole. Each project was envisaged in such a way that it helped the members open up to the graces of the Jubilee. The Jubilee Year also included a time to remember those in the JY family who had left for their heavenly abode. The month of November 2010, was dedicated to pray for all the departed souls of the JY who passed away in these 25 years. This became a moment of reckoning as it brought awareness of the graces received through the prayers and sacrifices of those who have gone ahead.

The preparation for the Jubilee was an introspective journey undertaken by each Jesus Youth across the world. It was a journey of examination of conscience and genuineness of commitment. As an outward expression of this spiritual journey, many JYs undertook pilgrimages to holy places – both on an individual level as well as in groups. It was an added blessing to have a group of 121 delegates from 8 different countries, including four priests and one nun, undertake a pilgrimage to holy Land in the month of September 2010.

Preparing for the big event The work of the pandhal at the Conference venue began with a blessing on 13th November 2010 by His Excellency Thomas Chakiath. Prior to the blessing, the central pole of the pandhal was carried in procession through the streets of Ernakulam from Thevara College, the venue of Jesus Youth ’85, to Rajagiri College, the venue of this Conference.

The Jubilee Office started operations in the venue from the first week of December. The Office and chapel were blessed on 3rd December 2010 by His Grace Abraham Viruthakulangara, Archbishop of Nagpur and Ecclesiastical Advisor, Jesus Youth India.

The perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Jubilee intercession which was happening in Thrissur throughout the year was shifted to this chapel and this continued till the last day of the Conference. Without doubt the grace of the Eucharistic presence and the miracles thereof was experienced at the Conference by most.

The Office was a hub of activity and the central point of contact for all the co-ordinating teams. In the weeks preceding the Conference, there was a constant buzz of activity as various teams of volunteers prayed, discussed and came up with creative and foolproof plans for the task delegated to them. As the race against time began and work began to pile up, everyone took a breather and spent a day in prayer on 13th December 2010 – the Jubilee Prayer Day. On this day, Jesus Youth around the world joined hands in prayer to intercede for the Jubilee Conference.

The logistics and organization of this Jubilee Conference was a Herculean task. Teams were formed early on in the year and each team started months ahead to plan and execute what seemed like mission impossible. The online registration for the Conference was officially opened on 20th June 2010. What followed was an historic response. It was as if every JY was one in heart and mind in their desire to be refined and renewed. An astounding 21,000 Jesus Youth from nearly 29 different countries had registered by November 2010. Different teams were assigned to carry out what may have seemed the most difficult task: boarding and lodging of this multitude, of the likes the city of Kochi had never witnessed. Just like how 2000 years ago Jesus multiplied the bread, the work of the Spirit was apparent in front of our very own eyes as doors of parishes and institutions opened up without coaxing or force. Nearly all Catholic institutions in Ernakulam and in the vicinity generously offered their buses to transport the participants. The youth were accommodated in institutions while the families were ushered into parishes.

The Jubilee Conference officially began with a bang on 28th evening with a colourful inaugural procession of delegates from 29 countries bearing their national flags and Jubilee Crosses. The stage was lit up with floodlights and the choir led by the Rexband got the people swaying to the spirits beckoning. It was a feast for the eyes, when the dancers from all over the world and all across India came in their traditional attire proving yet again that the movement was also a smorgasbord of colour and vibrant expressions.

Most rev. varkey Cardinal vithayathil, Major Archbishop of ernakulam-Angamaly

The Jesus Youth movement I can say began in my diocese, Ernakulam and your activities during these 25 years give pride to Ernakulam… I would say the strength of your activities is your spiritual life… This is the force that is sustaining you…. Remain united with Mary and carry out this spiritual exercise everyday. Your movement will become a great movement which will envelop the whole world.

Most rev. Dr. salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic nuncio to India

The theme of your Congress, ‘Refined in His fire, Renewed by His Spirit and Radiant in His Holiness’, is in reality to be, to change and to share with others the rich spiritual experiences… I congratulate all the Jesus Youth and all the Organisers, Resource Persons and Animators for their generosity and dedication towards this International Gathering on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Jesus Youth Movement… Praying for you for God’s grace, guidance, inspiration, enlightenment and blessings.

Most rev. Camillo ballin, vicar Apostolic of Kuwait I extend my wholehearted support for your efforts to keep our church ever ‘green’ and always with colorful flowers of sanctity and vitality. Let your follow up meetings and sessions in future contribute towards personal Christian formation and community building up. My best wishes and prayerful blessings on this beautiful occasion.

Most rev. thomas Menamparampil, Archbishop of Guwahati

I do not know who is the leader of this group here. I thought I knew individual leaders at different times, but I see them invisible. In other words it looks as though everyone is a leader and everyone is a follower. I thought this is exactly the translation of the Gospel into life. My prayer is that may this continue…

Most rev. vincent M. Concessao, Archbishop of Delhi

My congratulations on what you have become and the tremendous hope you hold for the Church… I assure you of my prayers that your commitment to the Church may bring about a renewed and radiant Church and not stop there, but bring about a renewed and radiant society.

Most rev. Paul hinder, vicar Apostolic of Arabia

I encourage you to deepen your Eucharistic spirituality and to remain faithful to the teachings of the Gospel, to imbibe in your lives the Word of the Lord so that you, yourselves, become individual incarnated words of our Lord wherever you are… Continue to be my dream!

Memories are intangible. Yet the emotions they evoke are many and varied – joy, happiness, nostalgia, a tinge of sadness perhaps – the list goes on. The Jubilee Conference was no doubt a very joyful and grace-filled event. Yet for many it got over too soon. Here are some of the things that the participants of the Conference received – some as part of their registration kit while others were available for sale. In the years ahead, each time we sift through these objects, gently savouring the moment, may they remind us of the days of December 2010 when as one family, we received showers of blessings from above.
