COPPER BONDED VS. COPPER SHEATHED...

There are a lot of factors to consider when determining which grounding system electrode is best for your specific application. Do you select an electrode based solely on cost? Or is your decision also influenced by longevity and performance?

The performance of the grounding system is dependent upon the effective operation of several installed components: the grounding conductor, the grounding connector, and the grounding electrode. Failure of any one of these components renders the entire system ineffective and increases the jeopardy to people and equipment. Most of the grounding system is concealed in the harsh underground environment, making inspection of the elements difficult or impossible. The initial selection of the components used in the grounding system is of critical importance to its long-term effectiveness.

The Wiring Rules, AS/NZS3000, prescribe the minimal requirement for these electrodes. In the case of a driven rod electrode, a non ferrous or non-ferrous (copper) coated rod must have a diameter of 12mm. Copper has proven to be much less subject to corrosion in various soil types when compared to zinc or steel.

The National Bureau of Standards (USA) carried out the definitive study in this area determining that 0.18mm of copper plating would result in a ground rod with a nominal life of 30 years. For this reason, both American (UL/ANSI) and British Standards require a minimum plating of 0.25mm.

Copper-Bonded Ground RodCopper-Bonded Coating:

• Permanent molecular bond

• Low resistance performance

• High fault current capacity (IEEE® Std 80)

• Will not slip or tear when driven

• Will not crack if rod is bent

• Copper coating may vary to meet required standards

• 10 mil (254 micron) minimum coating on rods listed to UL®467

Carbon Steel Core and Tip*:

• Greater Tensile Strength

• Deep driving capability

• Cost-effective long service life

*ERICO copper-bonded rods

Copper-bonded ERICO rodWon’t crack when bent

Copper sheathed rodCoating can crack if bent

By plating the rod with copper, a molecular bond is formed with the steel core. The quality of the bond can be confirmed by adhesion and bending tests as prescribed in standards such as UL467. Ground rods manufactured with a tubular copper sheath have no molecular bond between the copper and steel. Their sheath can easily be damaged during transit or on installation. When this occurs, the life of the ground rod is compromised.

Since the majority of electrical installations have a life of at least 30 years, copper plated ground rods, with a coating of 0.25mm should be used. This ground rod is more robust and has a much longer life than the tubular copper sheathed rod.

The BCAC-P-IC bushing protection cover from TE is designed to prevent animal caused outages on pole-top transformer bushings ranging from 15 kV to 35 kV.

This range has been successfully eliminating outages from all types of animals for years. This cover has been designed to provide the same great protection with enhanced features.

It’s easily installed on bushings and connections by wrapping the double hinged design around the insulator’s top skirt and snapping it in place with a robust latching mechanism. The cover allows for conductors to exit from both the top and side interfaces without the need to trim the cover. The design also allows for visible inspections of the connection as well.

Rugged high-voltage outdoor materials are used in the BCAC-P-IC cover design. The UV stabilized, track resistant polymer ensures excellent performance even in the most extreme environmental conditions. Paired with one of TE’s conductor covers, you can ensure the network is protected from accidental contact, and animal interference.

Note: Shear-Lok meets all electrical requirements of IEEE 837

AMP Shear-Lok connectors have been in use around the world for more than 50 years (more than 20 years in New Zealand). These connectors were designed for use on distribution networks for connections between cable and rod in transformer, ABS and Surge Arrestor applications.

Shear-Lok connectors are manufactured from the best materials and to the highest standards, in TE Connectivity ISO approved facilities. This connector range was designed and tested to adhere to all the electrical requirements set out in the IEEE 837 standard for earthing connectors.

Shear-Lok is a part of the AMP family, AMP is well known in New Zealand and around the world for expertise in wedge pressure technology, and the Shear-Lok offers the benefits of this technology. Shear-Lok is however, only part of the AMP (by TE Connectivity) earthing story. The Wrench-Lok connector which also exploits the benefits of wedge pressure technology is the “big brother” if you like. Wrench-Lok offers a cable to cable / cable to rod / rod to rod install all the time exceeding the requirements of the IEEE 837 standard. Wrench-Lok is the perfect partner for Shear-Lok as it’s designed to be used in major substation earthing installations while Shear-Lok takes care of the rest of a distribution networks earthing connections.

Teaming these two connectors up on your network is going to offer you the benefits of wedge pressure technology and the proven quality associated with AMP (TE) products as well as ensuring the best fit for the application at hand.

The shear head bolt and range taking capabilities provide easily-applied and highly-reliable ground rod connections - every time!
