Multicast
Multicast designates communication of a transmitter with a group of receivers. (Point to Multipoint). The IP Router sends the KNX telegrams packaged as UPD/IP telegramson the IP network, and all IP Routers parameterized with the same multicast address receive and evaluate these telegrams.

Unicast generally refers to communication between one transmitter and one receiver. In our case also unicast groups can be created, in other words, the router sets up a communication connection to every IP Router within the same unicast group.

Tunneling
Tunneling in IP communication allows to transfer data from one protocol to another protocol with no change of the content. In our case KNXnetIP data can be sent via the tunnel (IPS/S or IPR/S) as KNX telegrams on twisted pair and vice versa without evaluation (Filtering)

Routing
Routing for data in a network means a description for atelegram how to find the way to the receiver. In our case the multicast address or the membership in a unicast group is the criteria and guide for it. On the KNX side finally the filter table completes the process for the telegram to be sent to the right recipient.

DHCP/AutoIP
The IP address of the device can be received from a DHCP server
No DHCP server found
Start of an AutoIP procedure and assignment of an IP address from the range 169.254.xxx.yyy
The interface then cyclically (3 telegrams at intervals of 3 seconds, followed by a pause of 20 seconds) searches for a DHCP server. As soon as a server is available again, the address assigned by the DHCP server is used.
The IP address that the device receives during start-up (via DHCP or AutoIP) is retained until the next restart (switched off/on or reprogramming) or until a DHCP server is available again.

Up to 10 ABB IP Routers can be combined to form a unicast group. Each Router is then assigned 9 IP addresses to which it sends its telegrams.
It is also possible to link a client (e.g. a visual display system) with this unicast group. In this case, one of the ten unicast addresses is used by the client and up to 9 IP Routers can be linked.
Configuration of unicast groups is simple with the ABB i-bus® Tool.
Many Unicast groups are possible at the same time, but communication is feasible only within the same group.
Network telegrams are acknowledged and repeated if necessary
