JRC Annual Modelling Conference - Petten 2013
MIDAS in a nutshell
what it is – what it offers
MIDAS is a database of model
descriptions with an interface to
search and update model
descriptions
It links together models,
data, impact assessment
reports and publications
2
JRC modellers can maintain
updated model descriptions and
detailed documentation.
Model users and policy
makers from JRC and other
DGs can find models and their
descriptions, related data and
documents, and how these
models are used and/or support
impact assessments
Functionalities
• Model Editor and optional Wiki for model descriptions
• Searching the inventory through text-based search and filters
• PDF export for model fact sheets
• Archiving functionality for model descriptions (for obsolete models)
• Possibility for user feedback (through wiki)
3
Inventory functionality for describing and searching models

Conclusions
MIDAS
• Is an inventory with a memory that supports archiving
• Is a one-stop-shop to models that allows tracing of data and other
important information
• Allows to browse relationships between models, data and impact
assessment reports
• Is a knowledge management tool that supports impact
assessment
13
Challenges & Opportunities
• The system is only as good as the information that modellers
provide - models of strategic relevance should be very well
documented
• The inventory is a living thing, it has to be updated. Versioning
of models must be addressed.
• Relationships and browsing can be extended to any other entity
you may find useful (scenarios, projects, frameworks etc.)
• This tool could be used not only for models hosted/used by JRC
but also to support modelling activities in other Commission
Services
• This tool is now available for all Commission Services
