The Biologically Effective Downlight is a concept I derived under instruction from “Sustainable Group Services”.

Page 5: JPN Industrial Design

pg: 5

Images - Biologically Effective Downlight with “Petal Lens”. FRONT

It applies recent research conducted by “Fagerhult Sweden” into the effect of ambient light on our well being.

Page 6: JPN Industrial Design

pg: 6

Images - Diagram of the receptors in the human eye

“Fagerhults” research states that 100 Lumen Square metres of ambient light that falls above the “horizon line”, has a positive effect on produc-tivity and well being. The sunlight naturally provides this, but the sun is not always available.

Horizon Line

Page 7: JPN Industrial Design

pg: 7

Productivity is impaired when working late into the night, or inside dimly lit rooms. “The Biological effective Downlight” is designed to reflect adequate ambient light above the “horizon line” as well as provide a focused beam below like traditional 45 ° down lights. This will have a positive ef-fect on productivity and well being.

Following an assessment Len_B designed to spread light at 90 ° proves to have potential. Concept B designed to direct light towards corners proves to be benign.

A second prototype of the “Petal Lens” was cast in a polyester resin us-ing a 3D print and a silicon mould.

The clarity of the polyester resin prototype is closer to that of what an acrylic injection moulded component would be. This allows us to assess the concept with further insight.

Harold was completed as my final semester project during my studies at Swinburne University. It uses a series of unique methods to processes, and then re-purpose water that is otherwise wasted during the “backwashing” cycle of a swimming pool filtration system.

Backwashing Cycle

Images - Diagram of the regular cycle of a swimming pool filtering system

Backwashing is part of regular maintenance on any swimming pool system with a “Media Filter”. Back washing uses water from the pool to clean the me-dia inside the filter. The water used is wasted down the storm water drain.

Page 16: JPN Industrial Design

pg: 16

Images - Springthorpe Swimming Pool Case study

The size of this swimming pool is above average of any residential swim-ming pool system but below that of a commercial swimming pool system. The large Media filter requires backwashing fortnightly throughout peek use.

> Backwashing required for a total of 6 minutes every month.

> Resulting in the wastage of approx 2000lts of water

(300 lts per min).

Water Wasted in a summer day at Springthorpe

Images - Water wasted in peak use time.

The hot summer months of the year is peak use time for any swimming pool, it’s also the driest time of the year. The likeliness of drought, and the implementation of water restrictions makes saving water a necessity.

After being processed through “Harold”, backwash water can be directed to a number of locations as desired for re-use.

A defining feature of the system is the valve system. It’s modular sock-eting assembly is completely unique to any other valve. It’s design means that “Harold” can be customised as required to suit a number of applications.

An SLA 3D printed prototype of the valve assembly was produced to help others to realise it’s application and function.

“Harold” went through many forms , as I explored various solutions to the problem of wasted backwash water.

This project was completed as an exercise of technique used when design-ing injection moulded components. A size restriction of 100mm cubed and the use of current rechargeable battery technologies make the restrictions of the brief.

I practice a strong philosophy of always considering technical restric-tions and manufacturing possibilities, even from the earliest stages of any project. This allows me to derive both imaginative and realistic product solutions.
