At least three reasons to have Nuclear Materials in EERA
As low as wind
Nuclear energy produces
negligible amounts of CO2
E=mc2
(1 g U = 2 toe)
Nuclear energy exists and
produces ~28% baseload electricity in Europe
Materials are key for nuclear safety and cross-cutting through other energy technologies
No accident if material doesn’t
fail

Gen. II & III- vessel
Gen. II & III - core
(measure of exposure to irradiation)
Fusion
GenIV materials needs exceed those for GenII/III & overlap with fusion
The spectrum of JPNM activities is necessarily very
wide

Objectives of the JPNM: in line with H2020 challenges, focused on NM
Development of innovative materials for industrial use with superior capabilities: - More resistant to high temperature and aggressive
environments
JPNM improve safety & sustainability of Nuclear
Energy as low-C source, focusing on materials aspects
Better knowledge of materials behaviour in operation:- Predictive capability (prolonged irradiation & high
temperature effects, compatibility with coolants …)- Select qualified most suited materials - Define safe design rules

Joint Technical
Teams (JTT)
Small projects (~2 M€) focused on precise topics (included in DoW) that result from convergence of plans of a few labs from different MS. Typical duration: 3-4 years.
Groups of experts appointed to provide specific answer to a question, delivering a report. In charge for ~1 year.
Scientific communities involved in each SP that meet regularly in targeted workshops or other meetings to monitor and share results and discuss collaboration

Towards higher levels of integration in MatISSE
EERA JP Levels of Integration
5 Management of common research programme through coordination efforts between research organisations, national authorities and the Commission.
4 Comprehensive structuring: All coordination activities started in the IRP (see box), work on dedicated research activities and producing common foresight studies.
3 Joint strategy: Agreeing on priorities and roadmaps, Sporadic common research efforts.
2 Harmonisation: First adoption of common criteria, validating test procedures
1 Networking: Meetings to get to know each other, review of state of the art, first decisions.

An EJP on NM is a suitable tool to achieve further integration
JPNM starts from good level of integration
National programmes
alignment
JPNM is a small & focused platform
Capitalization of EU project results
Short and long term vision & plan
Boosted with relatively little effort
Seed for full integration of NM research in EU
… but covers most NM aspects, from basic research to link with
industry
Transparent way to monitor research on
NM in Europe
Objectives consistent with H2020

Summary
• The JPNM was created to support sustainable nuclear energy (GenIV), as a
means to achieve energy decarbonisation, with higher safety levels, efficiency, security of supply and minimization of nuclear waste
• Materials are key to guarantee safety of nuclear reactors of all generations and allow efficient & safe design of future nuclear systems
• New materials with superior properties are also useful for other energy technologies and bring innovation at industrial level
• Over the last five years the JPNM has reached a good level of integration in terms of convergence of national programmes, capitalizing on the results of different European projects and initiatives and providing a promising framework for exchanging experience, sharing facilities, mobility of researchers and training of young scientists (level 2, moving to level 3, in the EERA scale)

Conclusion
An adequately funded EJP on nuclear materials could be the flexible and appropriate tool in order
to boost the level of integration reached within the JPNM and provide the basis to extend its portfolio
beyond its current spectrum of activities
