BLUE PER CAPITA ENVELOPE, WHERE ARE YOU?

If you are wondering where the blue per capita envelope is, it is being replaced with a white one. See the picture below to see what you’re looking for.

The per capita payment has portions sent to the Lehigh Presbytery, the Synod of the Trinity and the General Assembly to help pay for the operation expenses of those organizations.

While the payment of the per capita is included in the operating budget, last year, Session asked the congregation to prayerfully consider paying their per capita to assist with the budget. The response was wonderful. Please prayerfully consider doing this in 2020.

The apportionment for 2020 is $39.10 per member.

LEHIGH PRESBYTERY January 10, 2020

From worship attendance patterns to diversity, finances to new family configurations, faith formation to pastoral leadership models, the church is changing. We can stick our heads in the sand and try to ignore this fact, or we can have frank conversations and figure out how we are called to respond in faith. Ignoring the realities of change will lead to the certain demise of a congregation, while confronting them head-on will at least provide an opportunity for potential renewal or rebirth.

I recently came upon a new resource that can serve as an excellent study-guide for congregations struggling with how to respond to the many changes they are facing as they move into the 2020s. Produced by the Lewis Center for Church Leadership (part of the United Methodist Church’s Wesley Seminary in DC), Changes Congregations Face explores in eleven sections some of the major trends impacting congregational life today. Material is assembled so that it can be used as a group study for a leadership team or as curriculum for an adult class. Each section includes questions for discussion and action planning so groups can consider how the changes relate to their particular context and what an appropriate response might be.

The best part? It is a downloadable resource that costs just $3.99! Please consider gathering some leaders in your congregation to talk about change—before it’s too late.

As always, contact me with any questions or if I can help in any way. Grace and peace,

Rev. Rhonda Kruse Transitional Presbytery Leader

LET’S TALK ABOUT CHANGE!ING?

For such a time as this, the congregations and leadership of Lehigh Presbytery

will partner to challenge and resource each other,

so that we may boldly risk our comfort for the sake of the Gospel of Christ.

Throughout 2020, Lehigh Presbytery will seek to learn how to be the church in an ever changing culture.

We encourage presbytery commissioners, committee members, church leadership, and church members to

join us on Friday, January 24, 2020 to hear speaker Tod Bolsinger, expand on this subject.

RSVP’s are needed so please contact the Presbytery office and let us know you will be there. [more

supports this initiative using Peace & Global Witness Offering (click the link to read the article https://www.presbyterianmission.org/yearbook/January-10-2020/)

Let us pray:

God of love and life, hear us as we pray for the witness of your peace to permeate all of the places where

we serve. We know that your Spirit is more powerful than all that challenges us, and so we turn to you and

rely on your strength and your courage to see us through. Amen.

The January Stated Assembly of Lehigh Presbytery is called for

Friday, January 24, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the

First Presbyterian Church 2344 Center Street, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

After a brief business meeting, Tod Bolsinger will be our guest speaker.

His book, Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory, offers valuable information about “adaptive change” that can help you and your church address the many questions in this challenging time. Tod explores how the church is at an exciting crossroad. “We are entering a new day, new terrain and a new adventure. We are not alone. The Spirit of God goes before us.”

This event is not just for clergy or commissioners. It is open to ALL. As Tod writes in his book, “We are heading into uncharted territory and are given the charge to lead a mission where the future is nothing like the past.”

We encourage you to consider joining us for this challenging and informative presentation.

The presentation will run from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. and will include time for conversation around tables. Tod is willing to stay longer for an additional, perhaps more in-depth, conversation until about 5:30 p.m. if there is interest. Please contact the Presbytery office, as soon as possible, if you are interested in staying for the additional period so we can make those arrangements with Tod. Please note if you cannot join us in Bethlehem, you also have the option of joining the presentation virtually at one of the two hub churches on Friday, January 24th:

1. virtual hub host church, East Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church, 55 Smith Street, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301 in conference room 3 (handicapped accessible, parking in lot, limit 15-18 participants)

PRESBYTERIAN

GIVING CATALOG

A paper chain built by Presbyterian

generosity is unbreakable. Get involved this month!

Our members are linked together by faith, fellowship, community and

generosity. The NEW Links of Love activity is a chance to make those

connections tangible. As part of our special #GivingChallenge, encourage

your congregation to build a 10+ foot paper chain together. Add a link for

every gift made through the Presbyterian Giving Catalog. Display your

paper chain in your church and watch it grow with every gift.

We’ll collect the paper chains from each congregation and connect them

all at the 224th General Assembly in Baltimore in 2020, showing the

enormous difference small gifts can make in the lives of others around the

world. Our goal is to reach 1,000 feet!

Every congregation is encouraged to use their creativity and vision and make the Links of Love activity their own, but we also have tools and ideas to make it easy to get started.

Fortified with grace, gratitude and God’s

love, these simple paper chains symbolize

the strongest bonds we know.

SPECIAL DOCUMENTARY SCREENING "TRACES OF THE TRADE: A STORY FROM THE DEEP

NORTH" When: Sunday, January 19, 2020, 6:00 p.m. Where: First Presbyterian Church, 3231 Tilghman Street, Allentown Cost: Free Register: [email protected]

The Lehigh Conference of Churches invites the community to view a special screening of the feature documentary, “Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North” as one of two events honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In the documentary, “Traces of the Trade,” Producer/Director Katrina Browne tells the story of her forefathers, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. Given the myth that the South is solely responsible for slavery, viewers will be surprised to learn that Browne’s ancestors were Northerners.

The film follows ten DeWolf descendants as they retrace the steps of the Triangle Trade, visiting the DeWolf hometown of Bristol, Rhode Island, slave forts on the coast of Ghana, and the ruins of a family plantation in Cuba. Back home, the family confronts the thorny topic of what to do now. In the context of growing calls for reparations for slavery, family members struggle with the question of how to think about and contribute to “repair.” Meanwhile, Browne and her family come closer to the core: their love/hate relationship with their own Yankee culture and privileges; the healing and transformation needed not only “out there,” but inside themselves. The issues the DeWolf descendants are confronted with dramatize questions that apply to the nation as a whole: What, concretely, is the legacy of slavery—for diverse whites, for diverse blacks, for diverse others? Who owes who what for the sins of the fathers of this country? What history do we inherit as individuals and as citizens? How does Northern complicity change the equation? What would repair—spiritual and material—really look like and what would it take? A discussion will follow the film. The documentary screening event is free and open to the public. We ask that people register to confirm their attendance by emailing [email protected].

IRS – 2020 STANDARD MILEAGE RATES

The Internal Revenue Service issued the 2020 optional standard mileage rates (PDF) used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning on January 1, 2020, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

57.5 cents per mile driven for business use, down one half of a cent from the rate for 2019,

17 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, down three cents from the rate for 2019, and

14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

The business mileage rate decreased one half of a cent for business travel driven and three cents for medical and certain moving expense from the rates for 2019. The charitable rate is set by statute and remains unchanged.
