ABOUT JOYCE

Gospel, jazz, soul and blues are the backgrounds of

Joyce Yuille. Starting her venture into the world as a

runway model she eventually found her true path…The

union between her soul, love of music and God given

talent as a singer. Being born in New York City has

definitely taught her the art of entertainment. A mixture of

multi ethnicity that only a city like New York can offer, a

melting pot that has aided in her creativity and way to

approach life. Accepting everyone as they are and always striving to share a dream and vision.

Extremely influenced by diverse styles of music not to

mention she was born and raised in the same

neighborhood as the legendary Tito "Mambo King",

Puente. Her admiration for divas such as Sarah Vaughn,

Nina Simone, Etta James, Carmen McRae, Ella Fitzgerald

and all time favorite, Phyllis Hyman, have influenced her

to create a personal style that is respectfully appreciated

and admired by her audience. Always fearless on stage no matter what the circumstances, her heart and soul

are the key during her performances, her quick wit, sassy

style and ability to touch the public profoundly, always

leave them with a “special feeling” and something

memorable to take home.

As a teen, Joyce entered into one of the most prestigious

high schools in New York City, which was introduced to

the world in the film "FAME". It was during her attendance

at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of The Music and

the Performing Arts where she began to focus on

studying music.

Eventually relocating to Milan Italy, she united with two

local musicians and formed the group 3*D. The group

recorded a version of Toto’s Georgy Porgy and the track

was stylishly remixed by JP “Bluey” Maunick of Incognito

fame and by Steve Lyon (Paul McCartney, Tears for

Fears, The Cure). With the latter remixing the whole

project entitled “Deep Inside” on Sony/Tristar. After

reaching international commercial success with the

“cover single” the group unfortunately was forced to

retire.

Joyce has been fortunate to work with many well-

known international and italian artists and served as

a background vocalist with the celebrated disco

diva Gloria Gaynor with whom she toured with for six

years. There have also been a few appearances on

Italian television and with her extensive role doing

studio work, her voice has been featured on

numerous dance tunes, commercial and radio

jingles from 1999 until 2005. Nonetheless, Joyce’s

smooth and more profound true vocal talents are

far more easily recognized and appreciated in jazz

which is her primary genre and blues/soul where she

has demonstrated her more get down “nitty-gritty”

style.

Her first solo album, “Welcome to my World”, was

released on April 15th 2015 and in a short time gifted

with rave reviews from major music critics and radio

stations across Europe, Japan and the United

Kingdom. Her collaboration with Finnish saxophonist,

Timo Lassy and his band, ; One of the best North-

European jazz groups visibly present on the

international jazz scene, has created an album that

expels a strong jazz and blues feeling, a 14-track

collection which includes new original songs as well

as four cover tracks from the soul/jazz repertoire.

The album was produced by Luciano Cantone for

Schema Records, a record label specialized in retro, Brasilian and nu-jazz, that also released Mario

Biondi’s debut hit “Handful of Soul” among many

others.

Joyce continues to display her talents and

continuosly travels, performing at numerous jazz and

blues festivals in Italy and around Europe, she’s been

on the stages of well known jazz clubs and

prestigious venues around the world. Sold out

performances at renown jazz club Blue Note Milano along with highly successful appearances wherever

she goes.

Her musical journey continues with an intense

charisma that gently but forcefully touches and falls

deep into the hearts of all who listen.

ABOUT THE ALBUM

“Welcome To My World” represents a transition for Joyce:

whereas for some musicians the recording studio is a safe

haven, for others it may represent an intimidating

environment: with her debut album, Joyce embraces a

new challenge that is able to carry forth her stage energy

and perfectly recreates in the studio that strong “live”

element which characterizes her performance. As she

explains, “When I'm recording, I basically try to put myself

in a scenario where I'm doing a live show and that helps

me overcome the fear of being in the studio and making

mistakes, because when you're doing live, you just go,

you've got to do it, you got to sing, you know, whatever is

going on inside you, you just have to bring that out and I

try to do the same thing, while I'm in the studio”.

As you listen to her warm vocals throughout the album,

which include a slight hint of soulful prowess, there's no fear that cannot be overcome. Her heartfelt

interpretations welcome us into her world, where an

intricate and honed voice texture reveals her incredible

qualities as an interpreter. Nuances of Jazz, Soul, Swing,

Blues: “Welcome To My World” is Joyce's gift to us – for

the fortunate ones who have had the pleasure of hearing

her live it would be effortless to recognize her warm

timbre and equally warm heart – this album is concrete

proof of her talent and personality. (In fact), Joyce co-wrote most of the songs on the album, original

compositions and her lyrics that reveal her profound

nature through music – “I wrote a number of songs that

kind of reflect my life situation, situations in my friends

lives, world events, situations I see daily, maybe just

walking down the …

streets.” Songs like “Late I Rise”, a tune that speaks

about perseverance and staying positive, or “Come

With Me (The Ride Is Free)”, where she urges us to

forsake our biases, to refuse to partake in prejudices

and judgement and just enjoy our time on earth,

respecting others and ourselves.

“A Time For Love Again”, composed by Marco Bianchi with Joyce’s lyrical skills, is another example of how this

album goes beyond music and expresses a powerful

and strong message: with this song Joyce speaks

about disillusionment in love, telling us how there's no

sense in closing ourselves in a shell and giving into the

fear of feeling and the ability to love again. We can all

love again, reach out to others and feel amorous

again. The album also includes some stand out covers,

classics such as Marvin Gaye's “It's Madness” and Donny Hathaway's “Trying Times”. The album features

the renowned and astounding Finnish sax player Timo

Lassy and his band – musicians who are amongst some

of the best Jazz players on the international jazz scene.

Timo and his guys bring that extra something, a subtlety

with a powerful impact and a groove that was

needed to fulfill the dream and the vision of Joyce

Elaine Yuille. Joyce has excitedly stated, “these guys

are wickedly fantastic, I keep telling everyone, don't

close your eyes on Finnish Jazz scene, because these

Less is more. If only a larger number of singers were capable of appreciating this simple fact. Joyce Elaine Yuille delivers an effortless, soulful performance on her debut album “Welcome To My World”. No vocal histrionics or melodramatic over exuberance going on here, just silky-smooth accomplished soul/jazz of astute quality. New York born, Yuille now resides in Italy and having plied her trade as, among other things, backing singer for Gloria Gaynor, she gets the well deserved opportunity here to showcase her vocal and songwriting talents. It doesn’t happen too often, but occasionally an artist releases an album where the synergy between artist, band and producer is bang on the money. This is one of those releases. Yuille teams up with Schema’s Luciano Cantone and the Finnish saxophone player Timo Lassy. Together with the empathetic strings and woodwind of Silva Catasta’s Synthonic Orchestra they make for the perfect fit and it is the arrangements and production that lift this recording to well above the average. Yuille’s influences of Sarah Vaughan and Phyllis Hyman are evident in places and that’s no bad thing at all, but the pleasing thing is that it is Yuille’s originality that shines through. The opening, and closing track of the session, “Come With Me” is performed in two very different ways. The opener is with full band and is a catchy, infectiously uplifting jazzy take. The closing version is paired back to voice and piano and is a slower, more soulful take. Both versions are exceptional and it was a great idea/decision to put the two tracks on the album. There are a mixture of originals and covers featured, and for me it is the not so obvious songs that work best. As an example, Yuille’s take on the classic “Tryin’ Times” is very enjoyable, and one gets the impression she is capable of singing such tunes day in, day out, with consummate ease. But it is the less expected gems that sparkle for this listener. “Late I Rise” is a bluesy number performed with a feel and clarity that draws the listener in with its simplicity. The lush strings and orchestration shine through on the gorgeous “It’s Madness”; this is stunningly beautiful and as highlighted throughout, the arrangements and production help take it into a different league: goosebumps time. “Time to Love Again” draws on gospel influences and its sparse piano and voice opening bars lead into an emotionally mature and very moving piece of music. The lyrics are beautiful and the theme is conveyed in a sincere style by Yuille that simply oozes class. “Make Right” highlights the superb playing of the rhythm section and is just one example of how well the bass and drums are utilised with a skillful sensibility. The title track allows the clarity of the singer’s voice to radiate with warmth, again with some lovely touches of masterful production. “Welcome To My World” as an album is a triumph, especially for a debut. Full credit to all involved. Hopefully it will get the credit it deserves and propel Yuille towards a long and successful career. MIKE GATES

Now then, I have to say that I am not necessarily a jazz man. However, if the voice on display has soul, and I can relate to it, then I’m very much on board. Actually on reflection, I do have a healthy collection of jazz related tunes amongst my soul treasures. So, to the album at hand. Joyce Elaine Yuille was a new name to me, embedded in a jazz tradition but with more than enough soul to keep me happy made for an interesting listening experience. Her voice sure does suit the genre perfectly, backed as she is by the legendary Timo Lassy Band, which includes the Synthonic Orchestra di Silvia Catasta with a full string section including cello, flute and piccolo. The music score is tight, lavish, inventive and sets a very high bar. (I mention those instruments purely because we don’t get that kind of extravaganza in Southern Soul circles!) She cover’s Donny Hathaway, Esther Phillips, Marvin Gaye and Penny Goodwin though this is no cover’s album. Instead, each track stands out on their own individual merit. Throughout, her vocals are powerful – demanding the listener’s attention, yet still at the same time they appear understated – like early Anita Baker. At times whilst listening I’m reminded of the great Jimmy Cobb album “So nobody else can hear” – Effortless and passionate. Straight then to track two, “Come go with me”, a compulsive dancer that seriously swings, a nod to back in the day when Motown dominated. “Too soon your old” ambles along on a bed of percussion, bass and horns to a relaxing pace when at 4.28 ‘bang!’ it takes off – a monster dance-floor mover that is destined for a remix or two. “Just say goodbye” is a stunning dancer too, that sounds like you’ve heard it a hundreds times before. One that is sure to be a big tune, once word gets around. For more of the same, try “Running for my love”; perhaps the most radio friendly of all the tracks amongst the album. The release isn’t about dancers, there are some fine low-rider moments too, with the whole album is overshadowed by her simply epic version of Marvin’s “Its madness”, this really is one of those OMG moments – the soul ballad of the year so far, as she interprets the pain and sorrow of separation so well when she cries “I’m flirting with insanity”, the string section comes in and bathes her pain away and in the dying moments she pleads “Only you can save me”. It’s on constant replay at home and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon, just wonderful. BRIAN GOUCHER

production, which might have been added to the record with a bigger label. But clearly, the real star of the show is Joyce – a talent that will definitely be huge in years to come – a rock-solid singer and

really swing on the 13 tracks. The up tempo ‘Come With me’, ‘Follow the Sun’ and ‘Running for my love’ have that retro jazz feel that the label is known for. ‘Make it Right’ swings like crazy and reminds

me of Dinah or Ella. Joyce’s version of Marvin’s melancholy ‘It’s Madness’ is absolutely beautiful. Her

cover of Donny Hathaway’s social commentary ‘Trying Times’ essential and the version of Esther

Phillips ‘Just Can’t Say goodbye’ is a really strong soul-jazz dancer. The killer cut though is the

amazing cover of Penny Goodwin’s beautiful evocative ‘Too Soon You’re Old’ that glides along and

turn comes alight when Timo and the band crank it up mid way through. This Incredible album which

manages to use old school values yet remains totally contemporary and is timeless quality music. It

introduces an amazing talent and is a strong contender for Jazz album of 2015. (LP)
