Academy Purpose

24 AAFCP Annual Meeting 2011

Board of DirectorsPresident, Jean Golden-Tevald

Jean is from beautiful rural Hunterdon County New Jersey. An hour west of the NJ turnpike and Newark Airport, Pittstown is where Jean calls home with Bill, her awesome husband of 29 years, and their 7 children. Jean is a Family Physician practicing NaProTECHNOLOGY since 2003. MorningStar Family Health Center sees NaPro patients from the New Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania area, offers Ultrasound Follicle Tracking as well as has 2 FertilityCare Practitioners on site to teach the Creighton Model FertilityCare System. For Jean, serving on the Board of Directors for the AAFCP has been an honor and a privilege.

President Elect, Paul Carpentier

Paul is from Gardner, Massachusetts, in the heart of New England and is soon to become the 26th President of the AAFCP. Like most of the Academy members, he sees his efforts in New England as a ministry or even missionary work! Paul has been a Family Practice physician for 22 years, slowing building up a NaProTECHNOLOGY patient base. Many of his patients testify they have come to enjoy a closer relationship with God through his ministry. Paul greatly appreciates the pioneering work of the Creighton Model FertilityCare System founders and other NFP researchers the world over and delights in all the new NaPro colleagues coming from distant nations.. He and Suzanne are proud parents of 4 young men (no longer to be called boys) who very much appreciate the FertilityCare ideals. Paul would like to foster the FertilityCare message world wide for all to appreciate when he becomes President of the AAFCP.

First Vice President, Dorice Millar

Dorice is soon to be President Elect of the AAFCP and greets you from Central PA where she coordinates the FertilityCare Program at Holy Spirit Health System and is the Director of their Creighton Model Allied Health Education Program. Believe it or not, growing up, she was the quiet one in the back of the room too shy to raise her hand. It is her passion and experience of the beauty of FertilityCare and NaProTECHNOLOGY and what it can do for the family that has led her to not be afraid and to persevere even to venture to Africa to assist with an education program there. Most importantly Dorice and her husband Kevin are the parents of 8 children, their blessings.

Types of Ovarian Activity in Women and their Significance: The Continuum (a reinterpretation of early findings)

James B. Brown, M.Sc., Ph.D. Human Reproduction Update 1–18, 2010 (published posthumously).

Abstract: This is a review and reinterpretation of a series of studies of the levels of total estrogens and pregnanediol in daily timed 24 hour urine collections in women as they made transitions through the normal maturation of fertility at the beginning of reproductive life, the return of fertility post-partum and its demise at menopause. During these transitions, all the reported types of ovarian activity are encountered. Unpredictable movement from fertile to infertile types and back can occur at any time during reproductive life. Stress is a major causative factor. Each type merges into the next and therefore the sequence is termed the ‘Continuum.’ Hormonal definitions for each type of ovarian activity, the relevance of the various cycle types in determining fertility and in the initiation of uterine bleeding, and the roles of the pituitary hormones in causing them, are presented.

Disclaimer: The article does contain brief comments favorable to assisted reproductive technologies. However, they are few and peripheral to the main thrust of the paper. This award is presented in recognition of the significant and sustained contributions made by Dr. Brown to the understanding of the fertility cycle and should not be construed as an endorsement of assisted reproductive technologies.

Endometrial Safety of Ultra-Low-Dose Estradiol Vaginal Tablets

James Simon, MD, Lila Nachtigall, MD, Lian G. Ulrich, MD, Michaela Eugster-Hausmann, MD, and Robert Gut, MD, PhD. Obstetrics And Gynecology 116(4):876-883, 2010.

Abstract: This study evaluated the rate of endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma in postmenopausal women after a year of treatment with low dose (10 microgram) estradiol vaginal tablets for vaginal atrophy. Results from a randomized trial (n=205) and an open label safety trial (n=336) were pooled. Two events of endometrial hyperplasia or carcinoma were reported in a total of 386 evaluative endometrial biopsies for an incidence rate of 0.52% per year, which compared favorably with reported rates of <1% in postmenopausal women.
