Local design and manufacture

Joy Global Africa designs and manufactures many of its products for the Southern African

market. Joy Global has invested significantly over the years in state-of-the-art technology

to streamline its manufacturing processes and to provide quality products to the Southern

African mining industry.

Engineering excellence

With a group of over 70 dedicated engineers employed at Joy Global Africa, our team

strives to lead quality, safety and performance in the design of all products for surface

and underground mining.

Africa - Centre of excellence, 50Hz shuttle cars

Joy Global Africa is the Centre of Excellence for the design of 50Hz Joy shuttle cars globally.

Our operation in Wadeville manufactures and assembles over 75 new shuttle cars

per year, and over 25 new and rebuild continuous miners.

Repair and rebuild capability

Joy Global Africa’s repair and rebuild capability is extensive, and includes repairs of large

motors for electric rope shovels and wheel motors for haul trucks. Additionally, Joy Global

Africa conducts all mechanical repairs on large surface mining and underground

mining equipment.

All of Joy Global’s state of the art Surface Mining equipment, which includes large electric

rope shovels, blasthole drills, wheel loaders and walking draglines, are manufactured by

Joy Global in the USA and are fully imported to Africa, where the equipment gets assembled

and commissioned on site at customer locations.

Introduction

Joy Global Africa opened its first sales office in Johannesburg, in the late 1920s. With its

Head Office based in Wadeville, South Africa, Joy Global manufactures and distributes

equipment from its Wadeville Manufacturing plant, a state-of-the-art facility driven by

Operational Excellence efficiencies.

Safety Joy Global Africa prides itself on its world-class safety performance in manufacturing

excellence. Joy Global Africa received the Global President Safety Award for best safety

performance in the category, more than 30,000 man-hours per month, 9/12 awards over the

last 12 years.

One of Joy Global Africa’s most important programmes is its apprenticeship scheme.

With over 50 employees participating in the scheme at any given time, hundreds of South

Africans have completed the apprenticeship programme covering a range of technical,

mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines.

Female and male employees are gaining qualifications to become electricians, millwrights,

boilermakers, welders and more. This has created, and will continue to play its part in

creating, more skilled labour in Africa.

Shovels

As production needs have become more demanding, P&H electric shovels have met those

challenges by employing constantly improving designs and systems. P&H shovels are

designed to optimise production with a focus on safety. P&H shovels are inherently stable,

and they position operators safely away from the digging face for exceptional visibility and

added security.

Blasthole drills

The proven, heavy-duty P&H drills are available for hard and soft rock applications.

With rated pull-down and hoist forces up to 68,040kg, P&H drills incorporate productive,

innovative solutions into its blast drill offerings. Optimized layout, component location,

mechanical design, drive and motor capabilities, are just some of the productivity and

safety features in P&H blasthole drills.

Draglines

P&H walking draglines handle some of the world’s most demanding material moving

challenges and optimize rugged and safe performance at very high levels of efficiency,

reliability and availability.

Mobile mine crushers

Available for coal and oil sands mining operations, the P&H Mobile Mining Crusher (MMC)

is a breakthrough advancement in In-Pit Crusher Conveyor (IPCC) system technology. The

MMC is offered in model sizes matched to P&H C-Series shovels.

Feeder-breakers and conveyor systems

Joy feeder-breakers are designed for optimum availability and reliability to lower operating

costs. By matching the feeder-breaker to specific haulage and conveyor systems, operations

will realize increased productivity.

Front end loaders

P&H wheel loaders are built upon a foundation of advanced hybrid drive system technology

for efficient fuel consumption. Standard safety features meet global requirements

recognized by leading mining industry safety councils.

Social responsibility

Having an impact beyond technology and employment, a large part of Joy Global Africa’s

spend on socio-economic development is directed toward more basic and essential efforts

to support local communities.

HIV/AIDS and TB clinic

Joy Global Africa, in partnership with a community-based organisation, supports initiatives

aimed at preventing, managing and treating TB and HIV/AIDS.

Joy contributed towards the building of a TB Clinic which serves over 2,000 patients

per week.

Inspiring change in education

Our business is committed to partnering with our customers on educational programmes

specific to the communities where they operate. Initiatives include the upgrading of learning

Empowering communities to be sustainable

Joy Global leads the mining industry with innovations that increase productivity and improve

operator safety. Innovations such as air scrubbers, Wethead cutterhead drums, AC traction

motors, noise-reducing conveyor systems and hydraulics manifolds, just to name a few, are

all industry-firsts from Joy Global.

Haulage systems

Joy Global Africa provides four complete haulage solutions in Africa to match various

conditions the mine operator may face. Joy shuttle cars offer high capacity, low operating

cost and a wide range of machine configurations to meet most mining conditions.

Joy battery haulers offer flexibility in routing haulage runs, extended battery life and

lower-maintenance AC drives. For certain applications, the Chain Haulage System (CHS),

is the most efficient method of moving mined material.

Feeder-breakers and conveyor systems

Joy feeder-breaker and conveyor systems are designed for low-to-high seam applications.

They are engineered for optimum reliability and are utilized in some of the most productive

material handling applications worldwide.

Complete longwall systems

Joy designs and manufactures all major elements of modern, high production longwall

systems and provides the integrated approach necessary for the productivity gains required

for success in underground mining. The major elements of a Joy longwall system are a

shearing machine, an armored face conveyor (AFC), roof supports, stageloader, crusher

and mobile belt tailpiece. Joy provides professional project management capability to

incorporate these elements into an integrated system.

Fletcher bolting products

Joy Global Africa assembles, sells and services the complete line of Fletcher bolting

products in Southern Africa.

JoySmart services

The opening of Joy Global Africa's JoySmart Services Center in 2009, has given

world-class service a new home. Joy Global's JoySmart Services Center combines all of

Joy Global Africa's services into one package under one roof, as an integrated offering to

our customers. The center features technological advancements in predictive maintenance,

field engineering, and integration of mining processes/systems optimisation, remote

machine health monitoring, condition monitoring, product operator training and

24-hour support.
