Period 2003 – 2005 with the assistance of the Norwegian MoFA

1. Stakeholders gathering

5. Recommendation for technical solution for the cleaning of the surface waste

Support to the cross border cooperation in the Drina River Basin 2005 - 2006

1. Establishment of the Drina River Committee (DRC)

Draft declaration ( February 2006) Signing of the Declaration on establishment of the Drina River Committee

( April 2 ) 18 municipalities joined the DRC

Goals of the DRC establishment:

Monitoring implementation of the cleaning of the Lake Perucac with suggestions for improvements Support in selection of the capacity building training topicsMonitoring of the implementation of the NGO grants ( 66.000 EUR)

In the meantime:

• Prespectful interest of the local communities and NGOs for this type of

networking• Emerging topics exceeded initial framework• Significant efforts of the National Park “Tara” in keeping the Lake Perucac clean • Aktive support from central governments of the Republic of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the process of cleaning of the Drina River • Sava Commission aknowladged DRC as an important subject in the region

• Continual support of the Norwegian MoFA

Activities in 2007 - 2008

1. Technical assistance in solving waste problems in the Drina River Basin

a) detailed assessment of the solid waste quantity and structure

b) Improving technical capacities for removing the waste

Options under consideration: - Setting up barriers in the Drina River for waste collection- Improving the capacities of the water cleaning vessel

2. Broader involvement of the stakeholders from the national level

a) Importance of the official support of central governments of the three countries

b) Involvement of national public utilities (energy sector)

c) using best practices from the region

- Parallel meetings of the representatives of central governments and power industries

3. Public awareness raising campaign

a) School competitions

b) production of video and audio clips for local media

c) publishing the bulletin with environmental topics

d) Printing a booklet for schools on the Drina River

e) Construction of trash bins along the Drina River banks

Done so far:

DRC office established and functional DRC administrator hired public awareness activities initiated (audio video production, setting up

trash bins, promotional events) DRC structure set, coordinators and executive body selected, working

groups established
