HOSPICE CARE OF THE WASHINGTON HOSPITAL

“This has been the perfect job for me,” Katy says. Of course Katy is referring to her position as Executive Director of Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital, which she retired from in April after 19 years of service. She explains, “It has been a pleasure to have been here and to work with such a great staff. The staff is the foundation of this program: I have always been the facilitator.”

Katy has a strong affection for the entire program, but especially for Donnell House, the inpatient hospice facility where her office was located. Katy had a unique opportunity to meet families and patients and really get to know them and their stories. “I truly enjoyed being able to get to know the patients and their families and to be able to interact with them,” she says. “Often they just wanted to chat. I love Donnell House because I get to see first hand what hospice care does for families. It is an overwhelming feeling when families leave the House after losing a loved one. We know we did everything we could for them.” “To me, Katy is Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital,” says Cheryl Morrell, Hospice Admissions / Clinical Coordinator. “She worked tirelessly. She was the welcoming face many families first met, the custodian, the caretaker, the enforcer, and the rock on which we all stood.” Katy remembers her early days in hospice care when she was Director of Social Work before hospice care merged with The Washington Hospital. She visited a particular family and never forgot the valuable lesson she learned.

She explains that when she entered the room to see this family, including four grieving sisters and their dying mother, one of the sisters told Katy she felt guilty. When Katy asked her why, she explained that her mother was lying there dying, and they were laughing and reminiscing about old times. “I learned a long time ago that life goes on when a person dies,” Katy says. “It was a privilege for me to see that in those four women. pioneer field. Her job as a director was to sell a concept and philosophy to physicians, health care professionals and a community that had never heard the word before. She was a leader in Hospice Care when we needed one.” Through the years, Katy admits that she learned quite a bit about the dying process and grieving families. She also learned that it takes special people to take care of the terminally ill. “Our staff helps families to be loved ones and not care takers,” she says. “Everything we do changes someone’s life.” Katy feels the staff helps free mothers, fathers, children and friends of their “care taker” role to be with their loved one and not worry about anything else. “You have to have a loving heart to work with hospice patients,” she says, “because part of what we do is to make people comfortable.” And Katy was well known for making everyone feel comfortable and safe: patients, their families, friends and her staff. “Bar none, Katy was and is the most dedicated advocate of excellent end of life care,” says Jeffery Minteer, M.D., Medical Director of Hospice and Palliative Care. “Her only professional goal was to make sure our patients had the best palliative care possible without regard for the cost. She never in the 20 years we worked together tried to influence my therapeutic plan in the name of the bottom line for which she was clearly held responsible. “She took a fledgling organization that struggled to keep its head above water and turned it into a first class organization. She helped orchestrate the relationship with the Hospital and ultimately the Donnells to bring about a long held dream of a hospice house. We would not be where we are today without Katy’s leadership.”

I first meet Katy Shultz in 1997, and we have worked together ever since. Katy reminded me of the saying, "The best things come in small packages." Here is this petite, beautiful lady with such an enormous heart to care for people and with such great big hopes and dreams to help people coping with

terminal illness. Neither Katy nor my husband and I knew when we first met that our lives would become forever intertwined because of our mutual respect and support for hospice care. Soon, however, Dick and I knew that Katy was God's choice to give us the confidence and determination to invest our resources, our hearts, our time, and our hopes in the Hospice Program of The Washington Hospital under her direction. To describe Katy personally is to begin with "HEART." She has a gift of respect, caring and sensitivity for people (and life in general) that separates her as an individual from so many others. She is a giver. There is nothing she will not do to help relieve distress and suffering where she can. In the hospice realm, she is as caring of the family as she is of the patient. She always thought of and planned for even the smallest needs that might make life easier for patients and families under the care of the hospice program. Every encounter with Katy made a person feel special and cared for.

Through the years since Donnell House opened, we have received so much feed back on the experiences of people including our own friends and acquaintances. Katy always figured prominently in the positive reports and the tremendous gratitude of those whose lives were graced by working with her. We are so grateful to have known and worked with such a fine person and professional. It's hard to find heroes today, but Katy is one of ours. Thank you, Katy, for all that you are and all that you have given to so many. God bless your steps wherever you may walk from this season in your life.

To those who have supported Hospice Care, It has been my distinct honor to have spent these last 19 years at The Washington Hospital as a social worker initially and then as the executive director of the Hospice Care Program. I have spent these years in the company of the bravest, most dedicated and most compassionate people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. It is a dream come true for any director to offer a full service hospice. These years are evidence to me of the unrelenting power of the human spirit to provide comfort to one another in the most challenging periods of our lives. Our staff has done a magnificent job in carrying out this special care through home care and Donnell House, our inpatient facility. I have been shown the special dignity unique places like Donnell House can give to our loved ones at the end of their lives. Dick and Shana Donnell hold a special place in my heart for helping to make Donnell House a reality for me and our community. From the beginning we had a wonderful connection that I will always treasure. Thank you to each and every one of you who shared so much – your grief, your joy, your passion – even your anger – but most of all, your love in making the dream of Hospice Care a reality. Once Again, Thanks, Katy Shultz

A Few Words from Richard and Shana Donnell

As Becky Golden sits and remembers her dad, Frank Angotti, it is obvious that he had lived a long, healthy and fulfilled life. “My dad was my mom’s caretaker for the past six years,” Becky explains. “My mom, Bertha, has many health problems and my dad took care of her every day for the past six years even in his condition (macular degenerative disease) until the big snow storm in February.” This snowstorm changed the family’s life forever. In February, during the big snow storm of 2010, Frank and Bertha experienced a power outage that lasted for days. This meant that they were without power, water or heat. Frank used a generator to run their furnace for five days. Although Frank was legally blind, during daylight hours he would re-fuel the generator every two hours to ensure it wouldn’t stop. At night the generator would not run and he depended on his daughter Donna Hoak and her husband, Bill, to restart it each morning. After five days, Donna called Becky and said that their parents needed to be moved to a place where they would be safe. Within a short period of time, arrangements were made to evacuate them from their home to a personal care home. In the middle of the snow storm the National Guard came and got the Angottis and transported them to a personal care home in North Charleroi. Unfortunately, Frank would never see his home again. Besides his eye sight, Frank had been very healthy his entire life. He was only in the hospital one time and rarely saw a doctor. Becky laughed and said, “Dad thought going to the doctor would only cause trouble for him.” At nearly 87 years old, Frank was still cutting his three acres of grass and plowing his own snow. He had been an electrician in the Bentleyville/Cokeburg area and was accustomed to hard work.

“People knew him in that area and knew how nice of a man he was,” Becky said. So imagine Becky and her family’s shock when they learned that her father had become sick a few days after arriving at the personal care home with his wife. They took Frank to The Washington Hospital’s Emergency Department and later found out that he had pneumonia and had septicemia. “The doctor told us that my dad probably had pneumonia for weeks, but didn’t mention his symptoms to us,” Becky said. “We started him on antibiotics right away and he developed Clostridium difficile (C. diff), an intestinal infection. After he was well enough, Frank was transferred to a long term care facility for rehabilitation. He was there for several weeks, but his health declined rapidly at that time due to the return of the C. diff. Frank knew he was very ill and so did Becky, a registered nurse. Becky explains that her dad weighed less than 100 pounds at this point and for someone who never took medication, he was now up to seven pills per day. “I wanted his symptoms under control,” she said. “I knew of the hospital’s palliative care and hospice program so I went to talk with Cheryl Morrell, Admissions Coordinator /Clinical Manager. Cheryl helped us get him in to hospice care, specifically the residential facility, Donnell House.

“Originally I wasn’t even thinking about hospice. I was thinking all he needed was to see a palliative care doctor. I soon realized that was not the case,” Becky said. During the first couple of days of Frank’s stay at the Donnell House he was alert and his symptoms were under control. Becky spent every day with her dad – reconnecting with him over the weeks he was sick. “When dad was at the Donnell House, I didn’t have to worry about him when I went home each night,” Becky said. “I knew they were making him comfortable and taking care of him and that made me relax. I didn’t have that same feeling when he was in the long term care facility. I always worried about him.” Within just a few days of her father’s arrival at the Donnell House, Becky said she felt like she and her family became very close with the Donnell House staff. “The staff was wonderful with us,” she said. “We got to know them fast. They always took their time with Dad and with us – never making us feel as though they were in a rush to get to the next patient.” While Frank was at the Donnell House, Becky and her family also made use of the house. Becky slept at Donnell House. They cooked dinner in the kitchen, used the computer, relaxed in the great room, and enjoyed fresh air in the garden area. Becky said she began to feel as if this was her house. She gave tours to her family as they would visit her dad. In the very early hours of the morning before Frank passed away, Becky went to see him. Knowing his time was probably coming close, she went to her office at work to finalize a few things. Before she returned, her dad passed.

Frank Angotti and his family spent his final days at peace

Please know that Hospice Care is very appreciative of all donations. However, starting March 1, 2010, we are suggesting a minimum donation of $5 per tribute name. This means if you are making a gift in honor of a loved one or in memory of a deceased love one, we ask that you send at least $5 for each individual you are memorializing.

Slow Dance By Rev. Sue Petritis & Pastor Gary Gibson

This poem was written by a terminally ill girl in a New York hospital. Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round? Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight? Or gazed at the sun into the fading night? You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask “How are you?”, do you hear the reply? When the day is done, do you lie in your bed With the next hundred chores running through your head? You'd better slow down Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Ever told your child, ”We'll do it tomorrow”? And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die Cause you never had time to call and say, 'Hi‘ You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last.. When you run so fast to get somewhere You miss half the fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day It is like an unopened gift…thrown away. Life is not a race. Do take it slower. Hear the music Before it is over.

“I knew it was his last day,” she explains. “Even though we were not there with him, I felt like he wasn’t alone because one of the nurses was there with him. I know the staff cared about him.” Although Becky and her family were not prepared to deal with the passing of their dad, they felt Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital gave them the ability to take a step back and really focus on Frank, not his illness. One message Becky wants others to know about hospice care is that it isn’t a “death sentence.” She said it is an experience that is close to the end of life, but it doesn’t mean “hopelessness.” “I would encourage our community to make a gift to Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital,” Becky said, “whether the gift is in my dad’s memory, if they knew him, or in their loved ones’ memory.” Becky feels so strongly about supporting the program because of the surreal experience she has had personally. Prior to Frank being admitted to the Donnell House, some of Becky’s co-workers asked her to be a volunteer caller for the Annual Hospice Phonathon. Reluctantly she agreed, not really feeling like she was going to make a huge impact on the program. As it turns out, soon after the phonathon Becky’s family had a need to use this service. “I am so glad that I volunteered for the phonathon,” Becky said. “I feel good about what I did for Hospice Care - I would do anything for them for what they did for my dad and my family.”

In the past, donors have asked Hospice Care and the Foundation if there is any public recognition for loved ones besides the “Legacy Library,” a faux painted commemorative bookcase located inside Donnell House. In answering those requests we will now have a commemorative brick garden. The first phase of

the garden will be laid this fall. The campaign will be in place for years to come. Bricks can be purchased through the Foundation Office throughout the year and each fall bricks will be added to the garden. There are two brick sizes available: 4” X 8” Red Brick $100 (Maximum 14 characters per line, 3 lines) 8” X 8” Red Brick $250 (Maximum 14 characters per line, 6 lines) Donors who purchased a brick will be notified when the garden is finished so you can come to Donnell House to view your brick(s). If you have not purchased a brick and would like more information, please contact the Foundation Office at 724-223-3875 or visit us on the web at www.washingtonhospital.org on the Foundation’s page under “Make a Donation” for a brick form.

To help ensure the continuation of the services of Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital for future generations, you can establish a deferred gift. Even for a person with modest assets, there are many ways to create his/her own lasting legacy. A few planned giving vehicles include: Charitable Bequests: An excellent way to ensure that your support of Hospice Care continues long into the future is to include Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital in your personal will. Charitable Gift Annuities: A gift annuity provides several benefits to you: you increase your lifetime income by a guaranteed amount, earn a higher percentage rate than on most investments (depending on your age), receive a valuable tax deduction, and you enjoy the personal satisfaction of making a donation to Hospice Care during your lifetime. Life Insurance Policies: Whether it is a policy you already have, but no longer need; or whether it is a new policy you buy for the specific purpose of making a gift to Hospice Care, a gift of life insurance can be advantageous to both you and Hospice Care. By naming Hospice Care as beneficiary and assigning ownership of the policy to Hospice Care, you can get valuable income tax charitable deductions, and this type of gift won’t reduce your current income. You can transfer the ownership of an insurance policy to Hospice Care without the legal expense of preparing a will or codicil. Charitable Trusts: You can establish a trust that financially benefits you for your lifetime, or loved ones you have named as beneficiaries for a specific number of years.

Gifts of Real Estate: Consider deeding your property to Hospice Care now and retaining the use and enjoyment of the property for your lifetime. For this you would receive an immediate charitable deduction, and the value of your home would be removed from your estate. The Foundation has many resources to assist you in your estate planning and when considering a charitable planned gift. Numerous articles and brochures are available along with software to calculate the advantages/disadvantages of different planned giving options. These calculations can be run for you or your legal/financial advisor in confidence and with no obligation. The Foundation recommends that you consult with your attorney, accountant, or estate planner to identify the appropriate vehicle for a deferred donation. For more information, please call The Washington Hospital Foundation at 724.223.3875.
